  1. On Running in the Evening During a Heatwave

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

Rationally it makes sense to go for a run when the sun is setting because the heat from the sun is lower. In theory this means that the body is dealing with a cooler environment.

In practice, when I go for evening rides and runs my body remains warm for hours, and that heat, during a heat wave, in a minergie building makes it unbearable.

For a few days it was cooling, and I had stopped using fans. I questioned why. I suspect that it is because when the building is exposed to heat wave temperatures for several days the air heats, but eventually the buildings’ structure begins to radiate its own stored heat energy. This means that you’re dealing with hot air, which isn’t bad. It’s when the building becomes a radiator that it becomes unpleasant.

When I was scuba diving the Léman was 5°c from 5-10m down all year round but now it has risen to 6.5°c. In the Alps there are roockfalls that are making rock climbing and hiking dangerous. Near Oechinensee rockfalls were seen heading for the lake.

We see images of England parched and dried up due to there being no rain for over a month.

England, and Europe are much warmer, and drier now. There was a news item about why fountains were turned off around the Vallée de Joux and about the desicated sugarbeet crops.

It’s worth remarking that we’re in a drought, and a heat wave at the same time. It’s hot, and dry. It is a good opportunity for natural history units to document this, so far, exceptional summer.Within two days the temperature should drop.

  2. The Sleepless Night Challenge

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Near where I live there are three or four music events and two of them are multi-day events. Last night when I was walking home I noticed just how much noise was bleeding from the festival and it polarised me into commenting on it, on Strava.

When I walked in town two days ago, and again yesterday I was struck by how dead the town is. Cars are rare, swings are empty. Roads are empty. There is barely any sign of human presence. If I didn’t know better I’d say we’re back in Lockdown, except we’re not. It’s not even because of heat that people are hiding.

I believe that almost everyone that can flees Nyon for a week, during Paléo. I believe that a few tens of thousands per night enjoy the event but that many others flee. They flee because they have no choice. Their children are on holidays, or their offices are shut for this week.

There is a silent portion of society that flees because of the event’s noise pollution, over not one or two days, but an entire week. I see a few tourists, but almost everyone I saw was at the Train de St Cergue station, or catching buses to get to Paléo. Few people, if any, are currently in Nyon. Even the frontaliers seem to be absent. Rush hour is quiet.

It’s funny, because if I say that I wake at four, to run at six in Morges people look at me as if I’m a lunatic. Those some people think nothing of staying up until four in the morning, and spending the next day recovering from a hangover.

I quite like waking absurdly early, to run, and then to get on with the day. This morning though, I didn’t, because I haven’t slept well in recent weeks, first because of the heat, but now because the music that keeps waking me up if I try to sleep continues until 02:30, if they stick to their schedule.

Normal people will never be critical of the event. They want to fit in, and be seen as normal. They don’t want the stigma. “Oh but this is the only fun event of the year” and “oh but it only lasts a week”. A week without sleep is a very long time. A week without sleep, if you’re driving a car, is dangerous.

Luckily the week without sleep is the week that two events out of four are in the evening, so they’re easier to participate in.

When people, or events, make it impossible to know whether you will sleep well, or badly, it’s harder to know whether you can participate in the events that you appreciate and cherish. It’s not that others can’t live their life and do what they want.

It’s that they should consider the impact of their behaviour on others. If you make noise all night and prevent someone from having a good night of sleep you impact the rest of their day.

This week, and this year, I was unable to flee. That’s why my post is written in the afternoon, rather than the morning. I also censored myself. I aim to be neutral on this topic.

I am not alone in this sentiment, but I am alone in expressing it openly. 😉 Nyon is quiet because everyone that thinks like me fled.

  5. "Brno court [...] sentenced a former police officer to three and a half years in prison for a brutal assault on a Vietnamese national which took place in January 2009. The man later died of serious internal injuries" -- "if he had received timely medical attention, he could have survived despite having a ruptured spleen and severe internal bleeding" -- "what the police thought was heroin were actually packages of starch" -- "yelling that he hated the Vietnamese" -- "abuse of power" -- "died the next day of serious injuries" -- "“[...]did not provide any medical attention"" -- "Two other policemen, who were standing by but did not interfere, landed conditional sentences. I better not buy starch now! Are there any other foodstuffs that I should avoid buying if I don't want to be IMO killed by brutal assault by the brutal Czech regime? Flour? Sugar? Baking soda? Salt? Now a citizen is afraid to buy basic foodstuffs! I believe that is called terrorism!

  6. @fabio Also due to these regulations I cannot buy antibiotic ointment when the Czech regime is depriving me of healthcare when I have an infected eczema and am afraid it will produce sepsis and I die, because antibiotic ointment ran out and when I call a dermatologist and tell I need it urgently she gives me an appointment 4 months (!!!) in the future!

In a corrupt developing 3rd world dictatorship Cambodia it is possible to buy antibiotic ointments without prescription and also dermatologist wait there is only 7-10 days, not 4 months.

Even averaging LSOAs (lower super output area) over districts can hide local variation.

(LSOAs represent about the same number of people but low-density LSOAs can appear larger than high-density LSOAs.)

  13. Why do #ConcentrationCamps turn into #extermination projects? Because #fash #states think that the #carceral #deprivation and #torture will deter #rebellions As we see from #Gaza the world's largest concentration camp - and many others, this is not what happens. The concentration is a radicalising process, in exactly the same way as prisons are universities and network facilitators of criminal enterprise. Faced with this realisation - that the people you have imprisoned are now fully concentrated on your defeat, the fash response - of course, always out of fear of righteous vengeance - is to seek to eradicate the threat of consequence rather than account for strategic missteps in creating the concentration camp in the first place.

  14. The Shocking Truth Behind #Scam Messages!

#AmnestyInternational has identified more than 50 #scamming compounds, locations where #humantrafficking victims and #migrantworkers are subjected to #enslavement, #forcedlabour, #torture and #deprivation of liberty across the country. It is highly likely that more compounds exist than those in this report.
