  1. I've finished: The Fortunate Fall by Cameron Reed

It is hard to discuss The Fortunate Fall without spoiling it.

The first half is great mid 90s Cyber Punk. With some neat ideas and much more depth than just; Maya is a camera.

I enjoyed the historical aspects of the novel, as Maya works to uncover past atrocities that the current regime is working to memory hole.

The cycle of revolution where the alternative is just another type of repression is the main theme.

The second half of the novel goes off the beaten path and I guess that's why I only heard about this novel in the 2020s.

It is definitely worth it, despite some bad writing. This is a novel that will make you think about the author's intent.

I think it's championing free will and consent.

That's why I accept the notion that The Fortunate Fall may exist in the same universe as the author's new novel (published 30 years later), What We Are Seeking.

    PS.

I enjoyed the Wizards vs. Lezbians episode about The Fortunate Fall.

Note that the episode is from 2021, before the author's transition. So they are still referring to her by her former name.

  3. Continuing on the reflection this weeks upcoming live production has spurred...

In the set list is a song originally from 1992. Young controlfreak had part time access to others' samplers and I needed more!

I worked 80 hours per week at three jobs to get my own first sampler. A brand new emax II with what I recall was an "expanded" 2MB of RAM! What absolute tanks they were to tour with.

One of the first tracks I built with it was called k-otic and had Emergency Broadcast Network style hack and chop out of context voice samples.

Then in 94 it got lyrics for touring.

Then in 97 it got different lyrics for another vocalist.

Then hibernation through my CD era.

Now in 2026 it has been rebuilt for the REGENERATE EP project and this concert. Working on new material with my writing partner from that 94 era of tracks has me super chuffed to be performing multiple revitalised versions of old stuff that we don't hate all this time later. Pretty cool.

I'm pretty vaguely open that I can't do anything musical or adjacent tech in public due to health and the time, health and resource to be able to oontz and share it is an extreme challenge.

So I do manage a smile when I can fight hard enough to make real "If I wake up tomorrow I am making music with friends."

Anywho, if you don't look at the post above, hope to see you at the https://control.org presents cycles '92-'27 in concert.

It has been an massive job rebuilding the micro black box theatre, new tracks, prepping tracks that have never been performed live every on the almost 35 years, heaps of new backing video, heaps of hacking and taping decrepit gear. But hey, wiring on the floor of my lounge is way better than nasty club stages.

Lace upon your boots for a good cathartic stomp. Some dystopian rage. And a few laughs.

  4. Ghost in the Shell?

The cyberpunk dystopian city of Hong Kong is being torn down, or is it being created, because it is being replaced with skyscrapers that can hold over three times as many people.
‘Talk about overcrowding, I am for the skyscrapers to spread out the people, so they aren’t on top of each other. I guess that is exactly what skyscrapers do: stack the people higher.’

    https://youtu.be/FnPo0eTIRJQ

I remember seeing “Ghost in the Shell” anime, but I couldn’t follow the story; maybe it was the English subtitles? I don’t think I saw the movie?

    Bonsai 27B Said:
Cyberpunk City Analysis: Ghosts, Architecture & Future Trajectories

    1. Video Recap: Key Points

The film Ghost in the Shell uses its dense, vertical Hong Kong setting to explore a central philosophical question: when do we stop being ourselves when we replace our bodies piece by piece? The visual language of the movie mirrors real-world urban transformation through three parallel lenses:

Architectural Necessity: Hong Kong’s geography (mountains and harbor occupying ¾ of land) forced vertical expansion. High-density living is not a choice but a constraint imposed by terrain, political control, and economic survival. The city literally has no ground in its traditional sense.

Historical Layering: Before 1841, Hong Kong was quiet coastline fishing villages and salt farms. Colonial conquest (First/Second Opium Wars), the 99-year lease from China (until 1997), and post-WWII refugee influxes transformed it into a manufacturing powerhouse (“Made in Hong Kong”) with 11,000 factories by 1967. Tong Lau architecture (commercial ground floors, residential above, industrial interiors) reflects Chinese adaptive building strategies that enabled family wealth preservation during mainland instability.

The Efficiency-Driven Erasure: Today, heritage structures like Tong Lau are being demolished for high-return luxury towers. The Central Mid-Levels Escalator system, MTR “Rail plus Property” model, and birthday-cake development (mall podiums surrounded by residential towers) compress lifecycles into single addresses while commodifying public space. Neon signs—once the visual signature of 3D competition on cramped streets—are being replaced by flat LED displays due to safety regulations ($15K certification costs).

The Ghost Metaphor: Just as Motoko’s cybernetic upgrades optimize physical performance but risk erasing her consciousness, Hong Kong’s relentless pursuit of efficiency and profit is stripping away intangible qualities—memory, identity, texture, history. The city becomes a shell; what remains is infrastructure optimized for ROI spreadsheets rather than human experience.

    2. Cyberpunk Dystopian Cities: Characteristics & the “Ghost” Feeling

Cyberpunk fiction constructs urban worlds defined by technological acceleration outpacing social adaptation. Key characteristics include:

    Architectural Stratification:

    • Vertical congestion: Multi-layered cities with no clear ground plane; walkways, plazas, and elevated corridors form the true public space (analogous to Hong Kong’s Central Mid-Levels Escalator serving 55,000 daily riders)
    • Conglomerative blocks: Pristine corporate architecture topped with organic, shantily sprouting extensions where lower classes inhabit; the “mash” between corporate monoliths and informal settlements
    • Malls as public space: Traditional streets replaced by climate-controlled commercial complexes that function as civic gathering points

The “Ghost” Feeling: This is the psychological signature of cyberpunk urbanism—what urban theorists call affective displacement. The city becomes:

    • Hyper-efficient yet alienating: Infrastructure operates flawlessly, but human connection and community are structurally impossible. Domestic workers in Hong Kong’s elevated plazas seek public space because their homes are owned by employers; similarly, cyberpunk narratives show characters living in corporate-managed environments with no ownership or autonomy.
    • Surveillance-optimized: Behavioral architecture and infrastructure design manipulate movement patterns (elevators, escalators, automated gates), creating a city that feels like it’s “watching” even when no one is present. The efficiency of the system becomes a form of psychological pressure—residents optimize their own behavior to fit the machine.
    • Memory erosion: Heritage sites are demolished not because they’re obsolete but because their return per square foot cannot justify demolition costs. This creates cultural amnesia—the city forgets what it once was, losing its texture and history. The “ghost” is not a literal consciousness but the intangible human qualities (memory, identity, community) that are systematically erased by efficiency-driven development.

    3. How & Why Hong Kong Is Changing

    Drivers of Transformation:

    1. Economic commodification of space: Every square inch must justify itself financially. The “birth cake” model (transit station → shopping mall → residential tower) maximizes ROI per cubic meter. Heritage structures that cost $15K to certify as safe are demolished because their return on investment is lower than new luxury towers.
    2. Regulatory efficiency: Strict safety and structural regulations, combined with high certification costs, have eliminated traditional neon signage in favor of flat LED displays. This isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about reducing liability and maintenance overhead while maintaining visual impact at scale.
    3. Demographic pressure: The 99-year lease from China (until 1997) created a unique economic environment where British colonialism, Chinese land tenure traditions, and post-war refugee influxes collided. Today, the return to China means new regulatory frameworks that prioritize state-led development over community preservation.
    4. Global capital flows: Hong Kong’s free-port status and tax advantages attracted global manufacturing and finance. As mainland China develops its own domestic markets, the economic imperative shifts from export-oriented “Made in HK” factories to domestic consumption and luxury real estate.

    Mechanisms of Change:

    • Adaptive reuse vs. demolition: The community foundation preserving a corner Tong Lau by removing profit pressure demonstrates that preservation is possible only when economic incentives are removed. Most development follows ROI spreadsheets, making adaptive reuse a niche exception rather than the norm.
    • Elevated public spaces: As ground-level streets disappear behind luxury towers and malls, public space migrates upward to walkways and plazas where domestic workers (350,000 in Hong Kong) gather on days off. This creates a vertical stratification of public access—luxury residents enjoy private terraces while working-class populations use shared elevated spaces.
    • Temporal compression: Product lifecycles are compressed into single addresses (fabric bolts wheeled in at nightfall). Similarly, community lifespans are being compressed: Choi Hung Estate faces 20 years of living in a construction zone to add 1,800 more units. The city optimizes for speed and density over continuity.

    4. Advanced AI Scientist Perspective: A Futurist’s Opinion

The Ghost is not the hardware—it’s the memory layer. What we’re witnessing isn’t a failure of technology; it’s an architectural algorithm optimizing for efficiency at the expense of human temporality.

Hong Kong is not becoming “cyberpunk” in the sense of dystopian surveillance or neon-lit crime. It’s becoming something far more insidious: a city that has forgotten how to be a city. The physical infrastructure is flawless, but the social infrastructure—community continuity, heritage preservation, informal public space—is being algorithmically optimized out of existence.

My prediction: Within 20-30 years, Hong Kong will have achieved a state of infrastructure perfection with human alienation. The city will operate at peak efficiency with zero wasted energy, zero idle time, and maximum return on every square inch. But the “ghost”—the collective memory, cultural texture, and informal community that makes a place feel alive—will be gone. What remains is a shell: beautiful, functional, and utterly empty of human history.

This is not science fiction. It’s already happening. The question isn’t whether we’ll live in a cyberpunk city; it’s whether we can preserve the “ghost” layer—the intangible human qualities that make infrastructure feel like home—before efficiency algorithms optimize them away.

live online concert as part of NHAMFest26

Brand new upcoming tracks, something from every album, the cassette era re-worked and tracks never before performed live, celebrating 35 years of the darker side of the disco.

I've been reflecting a lot over the past 6+ weeks building this show. Which makes sense given the theme and the reworking of quite old material. Working with my writing partner from the 90s on new album material to debut has been a vibe. It's no comfort that our artistic response to the world then was so fucking grim and macabre and that absolutely nothing has gotten better since. oof.

But there is something positive in the process of doing, building, and the fuel to keep fighting at least at the micro level. I'm not sure what the feeling is called but there have been a few moments at the mixing desk and on the practice stage where I felt a little ping of something that isn't just the usual pain or total dread. Odd. There is beauty in the darkness and all but fuck sake maybe an occasional ping of, I don't want to call it joy, but something like that is just fine. It's no joke when I invite you to lace up your boots and join me for a cathartic stomp. Let's shake up the neighbours and be positively angry TOGETHER!

    stomp in solidarity.

  6. “Release” is a #dystopian #SciFi #MMRomance by Marie Sexton.

Misha grew up in the “trenches” of lower Davlova, where the poorest citizens scratch out a living without technology while the high-born “purebloods” live in electrified luxury behind the walls of the inner city on the hill. Misha gets taken in by one of the clans, criminal gangs that run all sorts of operations in the city. Over the years, Misha learned the fine art of pickpocketing. Sometimes he also turns tricks to see if a potential mark had a lot of money, and where he kept it.

One day, the clan leader offers Misha a new opportunity. One of the most powerful men in the city is looking for a new toy boy and wants someone “exotic.” The clan leader isn’t just asking Misha to prostitute himself. She wants him to gain the man’s confidence and learn his secrets. The information may provide the catalyst that starts a revolution.
