  7. #photography Something worth saying plainly: clients who hire architectural photographers often think they're documenting what a building looks like. What they're actually doing is building the case for why the space succeeds — how scale reads, how light moves through it, how materials hold up under scrutiny, how the sequence of spaces tells a story. The photograph isn't the record. It's the argument. #ArchitecturalPhotography #CommercialPhotography

  20. #photography discipline: before building a shot list for a commercial location shoot, ask where the images are going and what they need to do. The answer — award submission, leasing material, documentation, marketing — changes the compositions, the coverage, and the deliverable format. It's the most important question in pre-production. #CommercialPhotography #ArchitecturalPhotography

    Columbus & Broadway

This is a colour street photo in portrait format of the front of a building brightly painted with the figures of various famous jazz musicians playing their instruments on a back drop of local street scenes. Columbus & Broadway, San Francisco (2013). The facade of the building is viewed obliquely from an angle of about 45º and captures 3 floors above the ground level. The building is a city low-rise apartment block that's neither new nor old. In view are the three floors with three windows on each floor, some open, some closed. Some with curtains drawn, some open. One with laundry drying below the window cill. Stretching upwards from the base to a little above the centre of the photo and dominating the image is the mural of a middle-aged pianist dressed in a jacket and blue tie, playing the piano with sheet music laid out above the keyboard. Above the pianist and in the upper left corner is a further middle-aged man wearing glasses, shirt and tie and playing the clarinet, Benny Goodman perhaps ? To his right and in the upper right corner is a man playing the drums, his head out of view. The background of the facade in the lower left corner is light blue with the gaps between the musicians being filled with local scenes with street signs, a windmill, sailing boat, car and high-rise in view. This is one of the bright and colourful murals that decorate in and around San Francisco's Chinatown.
