Igorrr – Amen Review

Igorrr’s fifth full-length Amen symbolizes a logical and natural progression – a refinement of what was hinted at in 2020’s already excellent Spirituality and Distortion. While retaining everything that makes the project absolutely batshit crazy, the addition of a full cast of musicians in 2017 has borne fruit in striking balance. Sonic architect Gautier Serre draws from the longstanding undercurrent of baroque and both twists it and lets it breathe, resulting in something liturgical, haunting, and organic. What Amen proves is that Igorrr remains one of the most unique and creative minds in both metal and electronic, while also refusing stagnation in continuous development and betterment.

Initially sole member Serre has been at this for twenty years, and the evolution of the sound from his early work with Whourkr and demos to now shows this range. The breakcore freakouts of Igorrr’s early albums Nostril and Hallelujah were pure sugar for the brain, the bizarre sounds and novelty the emphasis in their fusion of chaotic breakcore, trip-hop, baroque, death metal, and black metal. In this evolution, Amen feels like a meat-and-potatoes record, a gradual growth since the full band experience of 2017’s Savage Sinusoid that incorporates grandiosity, gravity, and insanity in ways only Igorrr can. The act recorded Amen with a full choir, spotlighting more well-rounded performances warped by otherworldly synths and abstract effects – reverberating with riffs at its core. It’s a reaffirmation of Serre’s genius/insanity and both a heaven of godly power and one hell of a good time.

For all its seriousness, Amen wouldn’t be an Igorrr record without some moments of absolute nonsense – and they’re dead center in the tracklist. While the instruments are immensely layered and it takes some serious ears and repeated listens to deconstruct the noise, some whacky moments swing in like a monkey in a pope hat to steal your banana split and rub its junk in your face. From the blackened blastbeats, classical choirs, and random piano plonks (“Headbutt”)1 fist fights of death metal, surf rock, and oriental music (“Blastbeat Falafel”), straight-up short-form grind (“2020”), some off-key recorders atop death metal takedowns and breakcore glitching (“Mustard Mucous”), and random electronic farts morphing into wonky rhythms, classical overlays, and full-body assaults (“ADHD”), Igorrr as a full-band unit is committed to the insanity. Vocalists J.B. Le Bail (formerly of Svart Crown) and Marthe Alexandre offer death/black metal range and operatic/mournful drama respectively, while guitarist Martyn Clément (also of HAH) and drummer Remi Serafino (formerly of Ecr.Linf) add a vicious metallic bite that expertly balances silliness, groove, and even reverence. The revolving door of contributors, veterans from Soulfly, Anthrax, and Mr. Bungle, are equally bought into the schtick, making Amen feel surprisingly cohesive.

While hinted at in Spirituality and Distortion and Hallelujah, the liturgical and religious elements of Amen add a darker and more serious tone to and alongside Igorrr’s trademark. These tracks are enhanced by robust and haunting choral arrangements, strings, Arabic microtonal scales, and sharp complex percussion, although central motifs help immensely in establishing what to expect. Riffy death metal beatdowns warped by electronic effects (“Daemoni,” “Mustard Mucous”), haunting lilting vocals atop plodding beats (“Limbo,” “Ancient Sun”), and unhinged vocal attacks (“Infestis,” “Pure Disproportionate Black and White Nihilism”) add darkness and liturgy to the band’s sound. Ascending to the heavens with epic choirs and hinting at mystery with its more enigmatic melodic templates, one certainly unique approach that Igorrr employs is letting the baroque and classical elements breathe rather than Serre being quick to warp them or distort them with effects (highlight “Silence”). This makes the album feel much more organic and significant – nearly a meditation.

Amen is Igorrr firing on all cylinders in its full-band capacity. Death metal vocals, operatic laments, choirs, strings, metallic riffs, and manic drumming fed through the machine of Serre’s electronics has never felt so cohesive in its interpretation of religious and baroque viciousness. Yes, the silliest songs are smack-dab in the middle of the album in quick succession (aside from “Headbutt”), which can feel like a distraction from the more serious bookends, and Igorrr’s music can be alienating at its core. However, Amen is a reaffirmation of the project’s batshit and fun-loving genius as well as a new step forward: haunting, brutal, and otherworldly in a way that we can take seriously.

Hexrot – Formless Ruin of Oblivion Review

Hieronymus Bosch’s triptych masterpiece The Garden of Earthly Delights is iconic, but like Dante’s Divine Comedy, it’s mostly for the Hell part. It’s not hard to see why: it’s a singularly surreal, oppressively grim piece. Scholars aren’t certain about Bosch’s religious beliefs, but the consensus is that he painted this panel to warn viewers to steer clear of temptation or endure everlasting torment in Hell. Avant-garde duo Hexrot has chosen to adorn their debut LP Formless Ruin of Oblivion with a portion of this panel, but they don’t buy Bosch’s dilemma. Promising in its promo a “stylistic mélange of death, black, and thrash metal with inventive electronic experimentation,” Hexrot has woven an abstractly grim tale of a world rejecting Heaven and Hell by plunging reality into empty Oblivion. Classical in theming, modern in sound, it sounds like quite the undertaking.

Formless Ruin does a lot, and all of it contributes to Hexrot’s impeccable sense of exploration and adventure. The sales pitch doesn’t lie about Hexrot’s sound, but it omits the unpredictable, jazzy feel. Along with Deathspell Omega-esque discordant black and Ulcerate-like dissonant death metal, the duo of drummer/vocalist/electronics producer Melmoth and guitarist/bassist/vocalist Arkain possesses a bombastic, improvised-feeling chemistry akin to Imperial Triumphant. From the skittering drums and bass of “Consecrating Luminous Conflagration” to the trash-canned climax of the fifteen-minute monster title track to “What Lies Veiled” riffing on and modifying Death’s opening “Symbolic” riff like a jazz standard, Formless Ruin of Oblivion rages and writhes in jazz fashion as often as it does in metal. Hexrot’s rhythmic talents are top-notch, serving obscenely busy drumming on “Heavenward” and immense, thrumming bass on “Clandestine Haunt” at odd and changing time signatures. Meanwhile, winding leads on “Consecrating Luminous Conflagration” and jarring electronics on the title track keep Formless Ruin’s melodic identity difficult to pin down. It’s a wild ride down to Oblivion.

Hexrot plays heavy stuff, conceptually and sonically, but Formless Ruin is surprisingly easy listening. Across its thirty-five-minute runtime, Hexrot seamlessly ties its songs together to form a continuous stream of consciousness, like a live suite. Every song besides the interludes is replete with movements and ideas without committing riff salad, while containing just enough repetition to cement hooks into memory. Vocals sound raw and upfront, consisting of a twin attack of bellowing roars and banshee screams that—while they probably would become monotonous alone—duel and complement each other, adding variety to Hexrot’s palette. And everything just sounds great: Formless Ruin sports rich production and dynamic mixing that allows every wild and disparate idea to breathe. Despite its avant-garde nature, Formless Ruin feels immediate through its grounded, live feel.2

Sometimes this album doesn’t even sound real at all. Because Hexrot established such an organic sound, every instance of electronic music creeping into the mix is surprising and even unnerving. “Consecrating Luminous Conflagration” ends and gets absorbed and rewound by the following “Ghostly Retrograde I,” synths join arpeggiated guitar on “Heavenward” to build its eerie elegance, and the title track collapses into crushed static. If there’s one aspect in which Formless Ruin isn’t totally enthralling, however, it’s sometimes when the synths and electronics stand alone. “Ghostly Retrograde II” drags by the end, as does the droning conclusion to “Formless Ruin of Oblivion”; these are the only times my mind wanders. But when they work, they elevate Hexrot, lending haunting qualities that at times remind me of the atmospherics of Cryptic Shift’s excellent Visitations from Enceladus. Hexrot’s push and pull between the organic and artificial is captivating: aptly put on the title track’s lyrics describing a curtain of stars “entering stage right,” Formless Ruin of Oblivion draws attention to its own artifice, revealing the artifice of its story’s reality, justifying Oblivion.

Formless Ruin of Oblivion demands your attention. I’ve begun so many casual spins of this album, and almost all of them turned into deep listens by track three. Hexrot has that touch to take the most seemingly unapproachable stuff and somehow make it addictive. Grandiose, volatile, unconventional, and surreal, Hexrot drummed up some Hell on this one, and I for one will be diving straight into whatever Oblivion they open up next.

Why? What is this?

#Radio Irrtum! is a German language (usually) #radioShow exploring the sonic vastness of the #underground. Emitted transmissions may raise attention for new unheard #music all over this planet's genre spectrum. Don't worry about that German language - it's about the music!

Well about the latter… not this time! Neither will I talk in German the whole time but mostly in English! Because this matter is too important for the World to know (I think). Nor is this new music. But music mostly from 1979-1981, the small time frame before the "real" Neue Deutsche Welle ("NDW") broke all over, the thing the music industry transformed it into (a cash cow), something completely different compared to what its pioneers intended.

This is about those pioneers. Sick of art, or progressive rock, and punk they wanted to do something completely off limits, something completely new, something "Anti music" that still somehow was "music". Just so different. A one in a thousand years moment where people tried to get on a different track. A moment that didn't come back since.
This radio special can only cover the surface of that super diverse scene; a scene agreeing on one thing only: About not doing rock music.
Which will make this special issue maybe the most complicated, hard to get into Radio Irrtum! show ever. But if you make it, you will be rewarded, yes rewarded, with most unusual concepts in music, with humor in music (yes! - not just in text) and all in all something, you may carry with you for your whole life. If you are open to it. I mean it. I certainly did.

So: Can you stand it? Are you up to the task?

One more thing: I've prerecorded this not knowing, that Alfred Hilsberg (Zickzack Label) would leave this planet forever some days later. This show is dedicated to him. Thanks Alfred, for the sonic light you carried.

Warum? Was ist das?

#RadioIrrtum! ist eine #Radiosendung, die die klanglichen Weiten des #Undergrounds erkundet. Die ausgestrahlten Wellen lenken Eure Aufmerksamkeit auf neue, ungehörte #Musik (normaler Weise), und decken dabei ein unglaublich großes Spektrum an Genres ab.

Dieses Mal ausnahmsweise in großen Teilen in (einfacher!) englischer Sprache – damit die ganze Welt davon erfahren kann. Es geht natürlich diesmal nicht um neue Musik. Sondern um Musik hauptsächlich aus den Jahren 1979–1981, dieser kurzen wilden Zeitspanne, bevor die „echte“ Neue Deutsche Welle („NDW“) überall durchbrach. Also, das, wozu die Musikindustrie sie machte (ein gewinnorientiertes kommerzielles Etwas) – nämlich zu etwas ganz Anderem als das, was ihre Pioniere beabsichtigten.

Und genau um diese Pioniere soll es gehen. Sie hatten genug von Kunst, Progressive Rock und Punk und wollten etwas völlig Außergewöhnliches machen, etwas völlig Neues: „Anti-Musik“, die trotzdem irgendwie „Musik“ war. Ein Moment, den es nur einmal in tausend Jahren gibt, in dem die Leute versuchten, einen anderen Weg einzuschlagen. Ein Moment, der seitdem nicht wiederkehrte.

Dieses Radiospezial kann nur einen Teil dieser extrem vielfältigen Szene abdecken; einer Szene, die sich nur in einem einig ist: Unter keinen Umständen Rockmusik zu machen.

Damit ist diese Sonderausgabe vielleicht die komplizierteste und am schwersten zugängliche Radio-Irrtum!-Sendung aller Zeiten. Aber wenn ihr Euch traut, werdet ihr belohnt mit höchst ungewöhnlichen Konzepten in der Musik, mit Humor in der Musik (ja! – nicht nur im Text) und insgesamt etwas, das euch vielleicht ein Leben lang begleiten kann. Wenn ihr dafür offen seid. Bei mir ist das jedenfalls so.
