Why are there so many US military bases in Australia, and could they drag us unwillingly into war? - podcast
By Presented by Reged Ahmad with Ben Doherty; produced by Cheyne Anderson and Lu Hill; sound design and mixing by Jacob Round; the executive producer is Hannah ParkesDotted like an outline around parts of Australia’s coast are military bases – the majority of which the US has control of or access to. Now a special Guardian investigation reveals the breadth of Donald Trump’s US military presence in the country, to a scale that the Australian public might not be aware of. Some analysts are warning it represents a ‘saturation’ or ‘colonisation’ of the Australian continent.

I had to make some sounds for the demo, so I started by looking at my archived codes in the Unreal Engine MetaSound project when I was working in the winter. Back then, electricity was provided for 4 hours a day, so the laptop had accumulated a lot of sounds.

The Anatomy of an Intimate Dinner Party: Lighting & Sound Secrets
There’s a point during a good dinner party when nobody is checking the time.
The food has been served, the wine is flowing, someone has started telling a story that’s gone completely off track, and suddenly the room feels different. Warmer. Slower. More intimate. That feeling doesn’t happen by accident.
The Dinner Party Isn’t Really About Dinner
We tend to think of hosting as a food problem: What should I cook? Do I need a starter? Is dessert necessary? But once you get past the basics, the most memorable gatherings are really about atmosphere.
Think of your home like a small restaurant, except better. You control the lighting. You control the soundtrack. You control the table. And, thankfully, you don’t have to deal with a reservation system.
The secret is creating an environment that makes people want to stay.
Here’s my blueprint for doing exactly that.
1. Kill the Big Ceiling Light
Let’s start with the easiest rule: turn off the overhead light.
Yes, I mean it.
That giant ceiling fixture might be useful when you’re cleaning the kitchen or searching for your keys, but it has almost no place at an intimate dinner party. Bright overhead lighting flattens everything. It makes the room feel functional rather than atmospheric.
Instead, build your lighting from several smaller sources.
You want light coming from different heights and directions:
- A small lamp on a sideboard
- A portable table lamp near the dining table
- Candles scattered across the table
- A floor lamp in the corner
- A small accent light near artwork or a bookshelf
The result is softer and much more flattering.
This is essentially layered lighting. Rather than asking one light source to illuminate the entire room, you’re creating little pools of light.
And those shadows matter.
They give the room depth and make a relatively ordinary dining space feel considerably more sophisticated.
Layering Guide: How to Dress for In-Between Weather: The Ultimate Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter Layering Guide
The Portable Lamp Trick
One of my favorite hosting upgrades is a rechargeable portable lamp.
Unlike a traditional table lamp, you can move it wherever the evening needs it.
Put one near the drinks when guests arrive. Move it onto a console once dinner begins. Bring it outside if everyone migrates to the balcony.
Look for a warm-light option with adjustable brightness rather than an extremely cool white LED.
The goal isn’t to make the room bright.
The goal is to make people look good.
2. Build a Little Island of Light on the Table
Your dining table shouldn’t be evenly illuminated.
Instead, think of it as a little island of warmth.
Candles are the obvious answer, but you don’t need a dozen matching candleholders to make this work.
In fact, matching everything can make a table feel overly staged.
Try mixing:
- Short votives
- Tall taper candles
- Small ceramic candleholders
- Glass hurricanes
- A tiny rechargeable lamp
Keep the flames and lights low enough that guests can comfortably see one another across the table.
That’s important.
If your centerpiece is so tall that everyone has to lean sideways to talk, you’ve accidentally designed a restaurant obstacle course.
Keep the center relatively low and let the lighting create the drama.
Makeup Tutorial: How to Achieve the Trending “Glazed Goddess” Look: Charlotte Tilbury Unreal Stick Tutorial
3. Sound Is the Invisible Interior Design
Here’s the part most hosts completely overlook.
Music changes the perceived size, energy, and mood of a room.
A completely silent dinner can feel strangely formal. Music that’s too loud makes everyone talk over each other.
You want something in between.
Think of your playlist as another layer of interior design.
Before Dinner: Give It Energy
When guests first arrive, the music can be slightly more energetic.
This is the social warm-up period. People are taking off coats, pouring drinks, complimenting someone’s outfit and asking where the bathroom is.
A little more rhythm works here.
Try:
- Sophisticated disco
- Modern soul
- Italo disco
- Jazz-funk
- Relaxed electronic music
The volume can be higher because nobody is trying to have a serious conversation yet.
During Dinner: Pull It Back
Once everyone sits down, lower the volume.
The music should be felt rather than consciously heard.
This is where softer jazz, acoustic music, downtempo electronic tracks or mellow soul work beautifully.
And here’s a simple test: if someone has to say “What?” three times during dinner, your music is too loud.
After Dinner: Turn It Back Up
Once plates are cleared and people are reaching for another drink, bring the energy back.
You can gradually introduce more recognizable songs and stronger beats.
This creates a natural arc:
Arrival → Conversation → Dinner → Drinks → Late-night energy
You don’t need to announce the transitions. The room will feel them.
4. Don’t Make the Table Too Perfect
The most beautiful tables often look collected rather than purchased as a complete set.
That’s why mismatched vintage glassware works so well.
Instead of buying twelve identical wine glasses, try collecting different shapes and colors over time.
A smoky gray glass next to a clear vintage tumbler? Great.
A delicate coupe beside a slightly chunky water glass? Even better.
The trick is to create intentional inconsistency.
There should be something tying everything together, whether that’s color, material, shape or era.
For example, you could use:
- Clear vintage wine glasses
- Amber water glasses
- Cream ceramic plates
- Linen napkins
- Brass or aged-metal candleholders
Nothing perfectly matches, but everything belongs together.
That’s the difference between eclectic and chaotic.
5. Let the Table Breathe
Another common mistake is filling every inch of the dining table.
Flowers. Candles. Plates. Cutlery. Decorative objects. More flowers.
Suddenly there isn’t anywhere to put the bread.
Keep some empty space.
A restrained centerpiece can be much more effective than an enormous floral arrangement.
Try a loose line of small vessels instead of one giant bouquet.
You could use seasonal branches, individual flowers or even a few stems placed in different-sized ceramic vases.
The irregularity makes the table feel relaxed.
And relaxed is exactly what we’re after.
6. Create a Visual Rhythm
A great tablescape has repetition without looking repetitive.
You might repeat a color three times.
For example:
Amber glass → amber candleholder → amber-toned flower
Or repeat a material:
Ceramic vase → ceramic serving bowl → ceramic candleholder
This creates visual rhythm.
It’s one of those tricks designers use constantly because our eyes naturally look for connections.
You don’t need to understand color theory to use it. Just choose two or three elements and repeat them around the room.
7. The Host’s Job Is to Set the Mood, Not Perform
There’s also a psychological side to good hosting.
You don’t need to create a perfect evening.
Actually, trying too hard can have the opposite effect.
If you’re constantly disappearing into the kitchen, checking the oven, rearranging the table and apologizing for everything, your guests will feel that tension.
Prepare as much as you can beforehand.
Set the table early.
Create the playlist before anyone arrives.
Put drinks somewhere guests can help themselves.
Turn on your lamps.
Light the candles.
Then stop fussing.
The atmosphere you’ve created should allow you to enjoy the party too.
Because that’s when the room really changes.
The Small Details That Make a Big Difference
If you’re trying to make an ordinary dinner feel more intimate, focus on these inexpensive details first:
Lower the lights.
Don’t rely on the ceiling fixture.Add warmth.
Use candles and warm-toned lamps rather than harsh white LEDs.Control the soundtrack.
Music should support conversation, not compete with it.Mix your glassware.
Vintage pieces add personality without requiring a complete tableware overhaul.Use texture.
Linen, ceramics, glass, wood and aged metal make a table feel layered.Leave some empty space.
Minimal doesn’t have to mean boring.A Simple Formula for Your Next Dinner Party
If you want to keep everything incredibly simple, use this formula:
3 lighting sources + 1 playlist + 2–3 table textures + mismatched glassware + candles.
That’s enough.
You don’t need a new dining table, expensive flowers or a restaurant-quality kitchen.
A warm portable lamp can do more for the mood than another decorative object.
A carefully chosen playlist can make a small apartment feel like a private dining room.
And a collection of vintage glasses you’ve picked up over the years can make the table feel far more personal than a matching boxed set.
That’s the beauty of designing an intimate dinner party.
You’re not really decorating.
You’re editing the experience.
Final Thought: Design the Feeling
The best dinner parties aren’t remembered because every fork was perfectly aligned.
They’re remembered because the room felt good.
The lighting was warm. The music was right. The glasses felt interesting in your hand. Nobody wanted to leave.
That’s the goal.
So next time you’re hosting, don’t start by asking, “What should I cook?”
Start with a different question:
How do I want everyone to feel when they walk through the door?
Then build the room around that answer.
And if you get the lighting right, choose the right soundtrack and resist the temptation to make everything match, you’re already halfway there.
What matters most at your dinner parties—lighting, music, or the table setting? Let me know in the comments.

Giornata Mondiale dell’Ascolto
🎧 2026: “Echoes of Tomorrow”
- In Canada, nasce Ear to the Future, una mappa sonora mondiale costruita dalle registrazioni inviate dagli ascoltatori.
In pratica:
🧘♀️ Come partecipare oggi
- Oppure… ascolta davvero qualcuno. È rivoluzionario.
