I have a new addition to my Best Shows memories.
As we were leaving Superbooth, a said to Septic Snake “I wonder if Mædon is playing somewhere tonight.”
So I went to her site, and sure enough! A tram ride would allow us to rest our feet anyway.
Then I looked up and saw a poster right in front of us for the show.
This is the kind of scene I was born for.

this was my lucky access to Buchla modules on Monday. Complex waveform generator, verbos multi-envelope, and source of uncertainty. quad function generator also particularly fun. Recorded over an hour of fiddling with these toys ehem modules when a student was absent. Happy the conservatoire has these tools but not many students show interest unless prompted.
On another note normally I find it so hard to get on with keyboards as a non-piano player. Guitarist. Different background. There is much to appreciate here. I have dedicated an upcoming episode in my podcast on pioneering electronic music composers to Subotnick and Buchla. even ADSR envelopes can be piano based in most synths but look at this… So much space for experimentation. Open space.

Vous reprendrez bien un peu de bleep-bloop ?
Là j'ai monté un VCO "2osc" / "FM", sur base arduino nano, qui utilise la lib Mozzi. Impressionnant ce que ça arrive à sortir de ces petits MCUs 8 bits qui datent d'il y a bien 20 ou 30 ans.
Aussi ça utilise le "NASA trick" pour faire un DAC 16 bits à partir de deux PWMs 8 bits. Ça marche vraiment bien ! -
Second half of day two of #BigEars: Couldn’t get a full look at Jeremiah Chu’s #eurorack cases, but there were definitely a #MakeNoise Mimeophon and Morphagene in there. Anyone into improvised music and synth shit should check out this SML album, to get a sense of what can happen when one member of the band is sampling, morphing and looping the other three members of the band.

Anyway. I checked out most of the set by DC cello/guitar duo Janel and Anthony, and slid further into full curmudgeon mode because from where I was sitting, their playing was gorgeous and their instruments’ tone was hampered, not improved, by all their fuckin pedals.
I did love that their onstage roadies appeared to be their kids. That was rad.
From there, it was a quick trip next door to see Eliana Glass playing a solo voice + piano set. I sat there and meditated on how brilliant Cat Power’s “Moon Pix” is, and how I hope that it gets a better 30th anniversary treatment than its non-existent 25th. Also, Eliana’s set was amazing, intense, quiet & very personal. And she had t-shirts for sale, which were clearly hand-screened and bootleggy-looking and weirdly gen-Z. I may have to go see her full band set just to pick one up.
And then it was time for as much of SUSS’s Across the Horizon as my butt could handle (Church pews, my god. I grew up Unitarian so we had rows of moveable chairs.)
Highlight among highlights was a completely mesmerizing duet between guitar wunderkinds Hayden Pedigo and Gwenifer Raymond, who had just met for the first time earlier that evening.
Also it was hilarious to see Bob’s nearly successfully suppressed irritation that Pan American showed up without a guitar, rather with a laptop and an Elektron.
Despite my meditations about Moon Pix earlier in the evening, I didn’t make it to Dirty Three. Everyone said it was amazing. Coming soon to a city near you, I think. -
Here's a better example of my newly built Passive Low Pass Gate acting in a real patch.
The Chord Organ by Music Thing Modular is a great VCO to use here, the bouncy echoes come from the sound being run through the LPG, which is being driven by triggers from the Doepfer A160-2 clock divider. The clock source and echoes are the 4MS Dual Looping Delay.
Other incidental sounds appear from several additional sound sources, including the Benjolin that is driving other sequencers and gates.

Final version of the DIY passive Low Pass Gate. From design to build in about 3-4 days.
Had some troubleshooting to do with ground connections but got it working without too much fuss.
I built this specifically to go in the case in the video because I needed a simple filter for a different dimension on the existing sound palette.

Ordered the first iteration of the PCB for the eurorack fuzz/overdrive I'm designing. I'll try it out and see what tweeks to make.
