  2. A quotation from Henry Commager

It is easier to say what loyalty is not than to say what it is. It is not conformity. It is not passive acquiescence in the status quo. It is not preference for everything American over everything foreign. It is not an ostrich-like ignorance of other countries and other institutions. It is not the indulgence in ceremony — a flag salute, an oath of allegiance, a fervid verbal declaration. It is not a particular creed, a particular version of history, a particular body of economic practices, a particular philosophy.

Henry Steele Commager (1902-1998) American historian, writer, activist
Essay (1947-07), “Who Is Loyal to America?” sec. 4, Harper’s Magazine, Vol. 195, No. 1168

  3. A quotation from Terence

DEMEA: No one has ever plotted out his life’s plan so successfully that he never faces
New challenges and discoveries brought about by circumstances, the passing of time,
Or experience itself. Inevitably, you discover you don’t know what you thought you did,
And the principles we first formed don’t hold up in the face of everyday practice.

[Nunquam ita quisquam bene subducta ratione ad vitam fuit
Quia res, Ætas usus semper aliquid apportet novi
Aliquid moneat, ut illa, quæ te scire credas, nescias
Et, quæ tibi putaris prima, in experiundo ut repudies.]

Terence (186?-159 BC) African-Roman dramatist [Publius Terentius Afer]
Adelphoe [Adelphoi; Adelphi; The Brothers], Act 5, sc. 4, l. 855ff (160 BC) [tr. Christenson (2010), Sc. 22]

  4. #TRUMP WAS NEVER HIDING 💎

The first time I heard #DonaldTrump was running for president, I knew what he was.

Not because I am politically brilliant.

Not because #Tasmania has better intelligence services.

Because he was so obviously ignorant, #malicious and downright nasty.

    The boasting.

    The #cruelty.

    The hunger for attention.

    The #contempt for #truth.

The constant need to dominate the room and #punish anyone who would not admire him.

I had seen that #kind of man before, both in politics and in spiritual communities around the world.

What I could not understand was why so many #Americans could not see it.

    Then he won.

And years later, they chose him again.

This video helps explain something deeper.

People inside #MAGA were not necessarily asking:

“What kind of man is he?”

    They were asking:

    “Is he on our side?”

“Will he hurt the #people we resent?”

“Will he restore the #country we believe we have lost?”

“Will he make us feel #powerful again?”

Once loyalty becomes identity, character stops mattering.

    Cruelty becomes #strength.

    #Ignorance becomes authenticity.

    Shamelessness becomes #courage.

Every warning becomes proof that the leader is threatening the right people.

#America did not fail to see Trump because he concealed himself.

    Trump concealed almost nothing.

Many people saw him clearly and decided his ugliness might work on their behalf.

That is the part worth understanding.

This #video is valuable because it shows how painful it can be to leave once a political movement has become your #family, your meaning, your explanation and your identity.

People rarely leave an #illusion because they have been defeated or humiliated.

They leave when the #story stops holding together, and someone gives them enough dignity to admit it.

  5. From climate denial to agnotology (the study of how ignorance and doubt are deliberately, culturally, or politically manufactured)

  11. A quotation from C. C. Colton

It is almost as difficult to make a man unlearn his errors as his knowledge. Mal-information is more hopeless than non-information; for error is always more busy than ignorance. Ignorance is a blank sheet, on which we may write; but error is a scribbled one, on which we must first erase. Ignorance is contented to stand still with her back to the truth; but error is more presumptuous, and proceeds in the same direction. Ignorance has no light, but error follows a false one. The consequence is, that error, when she retraces her footsteps, has further to go, before she can arrive at the truth, than ignorance.

Charles Caleb "C. C." Colton (1780-1832) English cleric, writer, aphorist
Lacon: Or, Many Things in Few Words, Vol. 1, § 1 (1820)

  12. A quotation from Charles Darwin

It has often and confidently been asserted, that man’s origin can never be known: but ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science.

    Charles Darwin (1809-1882) English naturalist

  13. There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread..., nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'

  14. A quotation from Daniel J. Boorstin

The history of Western science confirms the aphorism that the great menace to progress is not ignorance but the illusion of knowledge.

Daniel J. Boorstin (1914-2004) American historian, professor, attorney, writer

  15. A quotation from Victor Hugo

Certainly the influence of the past is very strong at the present time; it is reviving, and this rejuvenation of a corpse is surprising. It is on the march, and it seems to be winning — a dead thing yet a conqueror! It comes with its army of superstitions, its sword, which is despotism, its banner, which is ignorance, and in recent years it has won ten battles. It advances, laughs, and threatens; it is at our door.

    Victor Hugo (1802-1885) French writer
Les Misérables, Part 4 “St. Denis,” Book 7 “Argot,” ch. 4 (4.7.4) (1862) [tr. Denny (1976)]

I always presume, because it helps me get up in the morning, that most people are people of goodwill and would like to restrain themselves from offending people if they knew what was offensive.
