About the Book
One principle. Pursued without flinching. The whole of Advaita Vedanta unfolds.
The Upanishads teach it through a single homely image: the clay pot. The pot is entirely clay — the name “pot” and the rounded shape are cognitive overlays, not new substances. Strip them away and only clay remains. There never was a pot-substance apart from clay.
This is name-and-form analysis (nāma-rūpa vicāra), and this book makes an audacious claim: this one analytical tool, applied with complete rigor, generates the entire edifice of Advaita Vedanta — its metaphysics, its psychology, its doctrine of liberation, and its practical consequences for how a life is lived.
What the analysis reveals, step by step:
Everything is Consciousness. Body, mind, world — traced to their ultimate ground, all are names-and-forms whose sole substance is pure Consciousness, exactly as every clay vessel is only clay in different shapes.
The ego is not the doer. A name-and-form has no agency independent of its substrate. The pot does nothing that clay is not doing. The ego’s claim to authorship of actions is the pot claiming it shaped itself.
The world was never created. Pushed to its extreme, the analysis arrives at Gaudapada’s ajāta vāda — the doctrine of non-origination, Advaita’s highest and most startling teaching: no creation, no bondage, no liberation, no seeker. Only Consciousness, ever unmodified.
Happiness is your own nature. A meticulous dissection of desire and its satisfaction shows that no object ever contained the happiness attributed to it. The world is a mirror of your own bliss, never its source.
Along the way, the book shows how every central doctrine of Advaita — Brahman, Ātman, māyā, avidyā, the jīva, Īśvara, the three states, neti neti, sat-cit-ānanda, mokṣa itself — is simply name-and-form analysis applied to a different domain. What looks like a sprawling philosophical system turns out to be one insight, endlessly restated.
The exposition is grounded throughout in the classical sources — the Chāndogya Upaniṣad, the Māṇḍūkya Kārikā, the Bhagavad Gītā — and in the living testimony of three modern masters: Ramana Maharshi’s self-enquiry, Nisargadatta Maharaj’s radical pointing, and Ramakrishna Paramahansa’s instrument model of the body-mind. Comparative sidelights from Buddhism, Stoicism, and Taoism confirm the analysis from outside the tradition.
Written by a long-term practitioner in the Ramana Maharshi and Nisargadatta Maharaj traditions with the help of explanations by Claude, this book is neither a survey nor a devotional tract. It is a sustained demonstration — patient, logical, and uncompromising — that the deepest truth of Vedanta is also its simplest.

La culture de l’ignorance
Parfois, j’ai l’impression, malgré le nombre grandissant d’écoles et d’accès à la connaissance, que nous vivons une époque où un nombre grandissant de personnes semblent vouloir cultiver l’ignorance.
Je fais référence à l’agnotologie, un terme utilisé par l’historien des sciences Robert Proctor et Londa Schiebinger, qui réfère à l’étude de la production culturelle et sociale de l’ignorance, par opposition à l’épistémologie qui étudie la production du savoir.
Avec cette perspective, l’ignorance n’est pas toujours un simple manque de connaissance, un vide en attente d’être comblé. Elle peut être fabriquée activement, comme un produit culturel à part entière. Par exemple, l’industrie du tabac finançant des études pour entretenir le doute sur le lien tabac-cancer, les stratégies de désinformation sur le changement climatique ou la domination masculine.
Ainsi, il existe plusieurs types d’ignorance, celle qui résulte de la négligence, celle qui est stratégiquement entretenue en utilisant le doute comme arme, et celle qui naît d’un choix délibéré de ne pas savoir par indifférence, peur, ou intérêt.
Une autre perspective présente l’ignorance comme phénomène culturel diffus, comme chercher à démontrer un esprit libertin par une méfiance envers l’expertise, une simplification excessive, une fragmentation de l’attention, ou une valorisation de l’opinion au détriment du savoir vérifié.
Enfin, les anciens Grecs ont introduit l’ignorance savante, c’est-à-dire que l’ignorance est souhaitée, non pas comme défaut cultivé par d’autres, mais comme posture cultivée par soi. Socrate illustre bien cette perspective avec le « je sais que je ne sais rien » car reconnaître son ignorance est le premier pas vers la véritable sagesse, car celui qui croit tout savoir n’apprend plus rien.
Il y a aussi Nicolas de Cues et sa Docte ignorance, présentant l’ignorance savante comme une voie d’accès au divin, qui dépasse l’entendement conceptuel. Enfin, le Zen où suspendre le savoir conceptuel ouvre à une autre forme de présence.
Ici, l’ignorance n’est pas un manque à combler ni une arme de manipulation, mais une discipline, une manière de se tenir au seuil du mystère sans le réduire prématurément au connu.
Malheureusement, l’ignorance comme stratégie de manipulation est de plus en plus présente, permettant d’effacer les enseignements du passé, concernant notamment la liberté de pensée et les droits, afin de mieux contrôler les humains. Pourtant, toutes les tentatives de contrôle des humains sont éphémères dans une perspective de vie terrestre.

Réflexion sur le karma
Nous entendons souvent les gens évoquer le karma comme une sorte de fatalité. En effet, la notion de karma est souvent réduite à une mécanique causale, par exemple, on fait le bien, le bien nous revient, on fait le mal, nous en subissons les conséquences. Pourtant, des textes anciens soulèvent une approche beaucoup plus riche et plus troublante.
Dans le bouddhisme, particulièrement dans l’Abhidharma, le karma ne désigne pas d’abord une rétribution morale, mais le principe même par lequel l’existence se perpétue. Il est lié au saṃsāra non comme une punition, mais comme structure. Tant qu’il y a une intention, il y a un karma, c’est-à-dire la fabrication d’existence. En ce sens, le karma n’est pas è l’image d’une loi extérieure sanctionnant, il est ce que fait le désir quand il s’attache. La dimension causale n’est qu’une face visible d’une réalité plus profonde, par exemple, l’auto-entretien de la souffrance par l’ignorance.
Certains textes du Vedānta et du tantrisme suggèrent que le karma prend une dimension presque cosmologique. Il est la manière dont le monde se souvient de lui-même. Les saṃskāras (impressions laissées par les actes) ne sont pas seulement des traces individuelles, mais constituent une trame subtile qui relie les êtres et les situations. Il y a là quelque chose qui rappelle la notion jungienne d’inconscient collectif.
Dans le Mahāyāna, le karma n’est pas seulement ce dont on subit les effets, c’est ce à partir de quoi on peut s’éveiller. La souffrance karmique n’est pas une punition, mais une invitation à reconnaître l’illusion du soi qui agit. Nāgārjuna, dans sa vision de la vacuité, va plus loin, il affirme que, si tout est vide de nature propre, alors le karma lui-même est vide, il n’y a pas de porteur de karma, pas d’acte substantiel, pas de rétribution nécessaire. C’est une subversion radicale de la lecture causale.
La Bhagavad Gita propose la perspective du concept d’action sans attachement au fruit. Nous devons réaliser une action qui ne crée plus de karma, libéré de l’ego qui recherche une récompense. Si le karma est déterminisme, où est la liberté ? La liberté ne consiste-t-elle pas à échapper au karma et à reconnaître sa nature fabriquée ? On retrouve ici une résonance étonnante avec la notion taoïste de wuwei, agir sans agir, sans que l’acte laisse de trace.

La notion de karma nous pousse alors à poser des questions. Le karma est-il vraiment l’explication de ce qui nous arrive ? Qu’est-ce que l’acte révèle de nous ? Qu’est-ce qu’il apporte à notre insu ?
