  1. Longtime #Cincinnati noon news anchor/medical reporter Liz Bonis loses life to colon cancer #Ohio She was at her news desk even in her last days

"Even after her April 2023 diagnosis and five surgeries, Liz was determined, not to be the story, but to get the story. Even at the end of her life, she told no one about her fight. Instead, she reported vigorously on new medical technology and cancer treatments even as her options dwindled."

"Liz participated in six clinical trials for experimental oncology drugs during her last four years. Through these, she courageously fought what ultimately became a fatal war with colon #cancer."

"These cohorts are trending worse than their predecessors in all-cause mortality; deaths from cardiovascular disease and cancer, especially colon cancer; and external causes."

Increased colon cancer death in people who were 38 - 53 years old in the last year of the study period - that's pretty concerning.

Seems like colon cancer screening needs to be started at a much younger age.

  10. The Guardian: Colon cancer now leading cause of cancer deaths under 50 in US

"...Experts aren’t yet sure why colorectal cancer has risen in younger people, but Siegel said it’s an example of the “birth cohort effect”. That people born after the 1950s face heightened risk “tells us that there was some exposure, some risk factor that was introduced in the middle of the 20th century that’s increasing our risk of this disease”, Siegel said, “and it’s increasing the risk more and more with every subsequent generation.”..."

  15. Is Extreme Running Linked to Colon Cancer?

Katie Couric interviews Dr. Timothy Cannon, gastroenterologist and oncologist who conducted a study on elite endurance athletes and colorectal cancer. Dr Cannon presented his findings at the 2025 American Society of Clinical Oncology [ASCO] Annual Meeting in Chicago (link below). He discusses a possible link between runner's colitis and colorectal cancer.

    Excerpts -

    5:05
Cannon: it's going to take a huge effort to figure this out, but it is definitely real. I see them in our office every week, you know, patients under under 45, you under 40, often under 30 with colorectal cancer. I don't really remember seeing it that often, you know, 15 years ago.

    34:23
Cannon: I think um uh the most common ones are bleeding in your stool. You know, that's a red flag that and again that back to the marathoners. So many of them were told it was normal if
you run. I would not accept that answer

Couric: Or they have hemorrhoids, right? People blow doctors blow people off and say, "Oh, don't worry."

Cannon: Right. Exactly. Yeah. That happens all the time. So - but bleeding in the stool is a sign.

    34:55
Cannon: Abdominal pain is also a common symptom, but it's not there all the time. None of these are, in fact. So I think even having one of those things is enough of a reason to try to get checked out.
