  1. Timothée Olivier has written a blog post about a new paper he co-authored with Sunny Kim and Vinay Prasad in the Journal of Cancer Policy, which examines the evidence regarding systemic therapy in high-risk smoldering #myeloma.

The authors extracted relevant data from one of our reports (A25-109) and used it to support key findings.

  8. CW: Another step in the journey to reform Pharmac
In the conversations I have had with cancer patients, two common themes emerge. First, a deep sense of betrayal that in their time of need, and after having paid years of taxes, the government has treated them like a dog that needs to be put down. The prevailing attitude from cancer patients towards the government is, “they don’t care. I’m going to die, so why delay the inevitable?”.

Second, they are immensely proud of advocating for change and do so in the hope that one day Pharmac will become patient-focused, and others won’t have to suffer the same cruel fate and beg for their lives, or the lives of those they love.

Malcolm Mulholland from the group 'Patent Voice Aotearoa' is presenting a submission to Parliament today to increase Phrmac's funding.

  12. I've now completed 10 rounds of radiation to shrink what was left of the tumor and this week I'm starting chemotherapy for those other areas of cancer.

When I fell I fractured my left scapula. My left arm has been in a sling with no weight-bearing allowed. But the sling came off today. In therapy I switched from a little hemi walker held in my right hand to a normal walker and my walking immediately felt better!. So that's good!

  13. So the last couple of months have been, um, interesting. Here's a quick summary.

On May 5th I fell and couldn't get up. I called 911 and the EMTs took me me to the ER where an MRI showed a tumor on my spine that was compressing nerves. It also showed other spots of cancer elsewhere on my spine and chest wall. A neurosurgeon removed most of tumor. I was discharged to a rehab facility.

The cancer diagnosis was multiple myeloma.

I have news. Generally ’bad’, but nothing is ever entirely hopeless., especially when you have no fear and are surrounded by love.

Well, we finally had that difficult conversation with the haematologist that went along the lines of, “I’m sorry, Iain, but we have run out of treatment options for you and the other drugs we have available in New Zealand aren’t going to stop your myeloma from developing any further. We haven’t been able to access any others through a clinical trial or compassionate access. Your bone marrow is chocker with abnormal plasma cells and you have a few weeks, maybe a couple of months, left to live. I’m very, very sorry about that.”

I have one request; please don’t feel sorry for me. I don’t.

  19. My dad died in September 2021 at the age of 78 of an undiagnosed . That was abrupt, he died 3 weeks after arriving at the hospital, I still often think about that terrible month.
Beside having been a school , he painted is whole life since the age of 15, and left a large of and . I immediately thought about his complete work, even if it looked like a huge undertaking, probably for both said and unsaid reasons.

  20. A new study by researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson #Cancer Center highlights novel insights into the evolution of multiple #myeloma from precursor disease, which may help better identify patients likely to progress and develop new interventions.
