  1. (kind of a sub-toot, but in the context of my family drama rather than my mastodon drama)

If you have a someone who is about to die, there's no such thing as "too early" when it comes to planning for their death.

Invite the people who want to say goodbye early rather than late. If the person lives longer than you expected, all good, and they might get a chance to say goodbye twice. Don't wait till the person who is leaving has drifted so far away that you've lost that chance for connection.

Don't prevent people from talking about death and dying if that's what they need. People have the right to opt out but it's disrespectful to shut down that conversation for other people.

There is nothing wrong or weird about planning the funeral and memorial service while the person is still alive. The shock of grief does weird things to families and friends, and ideally you shouldn't be wrestling with funeral logistics while in that state.

  4. Now that the Assisted Dying Bill here in the UK has passed the first hurdle in the line to becoming legal, I have to say I think the it's being rushed, and there needs to be a firm legal and medical framework put in place before assisted dying becomes law. Certainly our National Health Service as of now, is not equipped for a change as big as this. There also needs to be 100% watertight legal protection for vulnerable people who could be coerced into euthanasia. It needs more thought, though I absolutely do agree with the principle.

  5. CW: Mutual aid request for a friend who is dying 💔

"Thank you to those who have donated.

Sadly, I have been told that I must go to hospice. My heart efficiency has crashed and the tests show that fixing the issues are not feasible. I have accepted my fate and I am just going to try to enjoy my time that I have left.

Thanks to a nonprofit and Medicaid the majority of my hospice bill has been paid. However, I am responsible for a $2000 copay. I haven’t been able to work for the past month and so I don’t have the money to pay it, so any amount you can help me with will be appreciated. If there is any extra, it will go towards funeral expenses. Thank you for everything. Don’t be sad, it’s just the start of a new journey"

Any bit helps! I want him to be able to have peace and for his children to also have peace of mind in his past days.

Thank you so much for the shares and donations 💜🌻

  6. An important perspective on hospices. My sister was diagnosed with stage 4 incurable cancer about 18 months ago, she was initially horrified to receive a letter about palliative care, but her local hospice offers her so much more than just end of life care. This includes therapy, massages and any number of other outpatient services for her and her family.

  7. I've been quiet and patchy on social media for a while now - partly because of ongoing long COVID - which I've been transparent about - but also because my mother's dementia is worsening. Which I haven't chosen to talk openly about until now.

Dementia is a horrible terminal disease, and although my mother's has been kind to us as she still recognises the people closest to her and that is somewhat comforting as her world gets smaller and smaller, it is still devestating.

I am my mother's responsible person for everything - do your advance planning everyone! - and although we are well-organised this is still incredibly difficult and exhausting. For anyone who has waited for me to return emails or phone calls this is the primary reason, and again I thank you for your patience with my erratic schedule.

I will be travelling back to the mainland this weekend, returning next week, to help settle my mum into full-time care. The admin alone is astonishing, as those of you who have undertaken this process understand, but the details of moving a life from a home into a care facility is wrenching and fraught.

Have a good weekend and I'll see you soon,

    Annetta
