  1. I have 2 Western Digital Blue 4 TB drives that I pulled from my main PC (that I built 8 years ago) and put them into a 2U server. I am going to run them in RAID0 and see how long they last.

They are hybrid and actually have 8GB SSD cache each. It is an experiment to see them on a dedicated PCI SATA card that is assigned to a VM on (as the hypervisor) running the ProxMox Backup Server OS on the VM. Of course, I had to enable .

    What could possibly go wrong?

  2. I would like to have some machines on my home network available to me at work. I can't install tools like on my work PC. I just need the ability to SSH into my home machines from work. I am thinking a VPS is needed to make this happen.

I know I am asking the right people here. How do I accomplish this?

  3. So, I finally found a use case that is best on a tablet...playing tower defense games. I downloaded a game I have loved for years: Kingdom Rush. It plays well on a tablet, okay on a desktop, and horrible on a phone.

  4. I have had storage and for years now. This past week, I was able to set up external storage on my NextCloud instance by adding some BackBlazeB2 buckets to each user on my NextCloud. Who needs or native cloud storage, when you can host your own for cheaper?!

Thank you @nextcloud for providing a superior and high-utility FOSS product that keeps getting better and better.

  5. Last week, I became a . I will not post this "achievement" on LinkedIn because it is not a big deal. The hands out proprietary certs that require students to sit through prescribed hours in a "course" and take an "exam" that is open-book. I know that and are popular, but you can't do important things using these cheap methods (building a bridge, upgrading an enterprise system, etc.). Sometimes use of these methods is an excuse for not planning.

  6. So, I have a new and empty office. I wanted to decorate the walls with some custom paintings. My wife happens to be a painter. I want to put up some works of art that are or based. Sure, I could have Tux painted, buy that seems so cliché.

Do you have any suggestions on what I could get painted for the new office?

  7. I took on a role as a lecturer at a local university. I will teach weekly evening Computer Information Systems Classes starting tonight. I will keep encouraging students to think critically (not just in IT, but more so in life).

What other advice do you think I should instill in these young, ambitious minds?

  8. What is the best way I can rip my BluRay movies to digital format on a Linux machine?

  9. Anyone else on ? I just signed up and love it. I am codeHaiku on hackerrank.com.

  10. Frankly speaking, I was getting tired of ALT+TAB and workspaces as a way of switching applications on . Today, I found an extension called that makes switching between open applications more intuitive. Microsoft spent a lot of resources researching the best workflow and it turns out a start button (application launcher) and a taskbar with open applications (and pinned favorites) is most efficient. I like my install once more and won't be moving to or .

  11. Upgraded last night from 20.04 to 21.04 on my main rig. The uograde was slow and a bit nerve-racking. In the end, I must say that desktop is quite nice. I no longer need installed. I hope this DE carries on into . Otherwise, it is on a different distro as a replacement.

  12. My current employer is using along with databases and as a service-oriented architecture (SOA) to create data interchange amongst disparate systems. It is mostly performing extract-transform-load operations. I wrote something in which is way more lightweight and does the same. However, it is more of a script and not necessarily a solution.

What would you recommend as a replacement for the SOA architecture? ? ? ?

  13. So, I tried today and I didn't expect to be disappointed, but here I am. I don't like , in fact it is making me consider a different distro and different DE for a laptop that I have that currently runs Fedora. Lately, with the kernel has really been my favorite. But, I don't want 2 machines with the same distro. So, the search for another distro continues. I think may be a contender.

  14. I recently went with for a cloud vps . It is 2 CPU/2 GB RAM/40 GB SSD/~5 USD per month. I have installed as a on an server.

provided me with a free domain name and DNS. I just added an A record on cloudns and pointed it to the IP of the vps.

Then, I modified a nextcloud config file and added the free domain to the trusted section.

Finally, I setup SSL encryption with .

Now I have my own nextcloud server! Thank you all!

  15. Just finished a new PC build for my brother. with 64GB RAM and an . The OS you ask? It is of course! Look closely at the welcome screen reflection in the third image.

  16. Built this beast of a machine for my brother today. Hid all of the cables to the motherboard as discretely as possible. Just need to drop in the processor now and the GPU.

  17. I am not , I just dislike those who push their belief system on me or persecute me for being content and virtuous by not having a "belief system". Being free of an ordained is a lot like running ; it's lightweight, guilt-free, righteous, harms no one, costs no money, requires no weekly participation, thrives in factuality whether you believe or not, is based on rationality and logic, is imperically sound, is not sustained by corporate interests or politics, and is free.

  18. At work we are decommissioning an server and replacing it with an server. The biggest gains have been thanks to . It wasn't around 8 years back on . Now we can perform mounts dependent on the network after network connectivity is established, launch custom scripts, and have automated email status alerts. The persistence of a well-written systemd unit and service is truly amazing and has improved our servers' capabilities, reliability, and uptime.

  19. I started a new job about 4 months back and found out that some department are still using apps written in . This was a huge red flag and brought me back into IT Consultant mode.

To convince management of how bad of a situation it was to run legacy apps, I made and presented this infographic. Needless to say, it worked. They see the urgency now.

  20. @LPS I had to disable in the BIOS and then proceeded to install without issue. This machine has an drive. I have never owned a machine with an nvme before. So, this should feel very snappy and fast. Upon installation and reboot, popos indicated that I needed to install some firmware updates from and . So, I did and it went very well (I was a bit nervous at having to do this). The only app I needed to install and configure thereafter was .

  21. I prefer laptops for their rock solid durability, hot-swappable battery, and full compatibility.

What manufacturer do you prefer for your machines?

(I realize there are more such as , , , , etc. The poll only allows for 4 options.)

  22. @kev I would recommend the . The one you have looks pretty painful to use for prolonged time.

  23. @orbjet I am glad that it was introduced. It brought the price of the down significantly. When this happens to the ergo, I will buy it and try it. In the end, all mice I have owned had a worn out left mouse button switch after prolonged use. With this in mind, I don't spend too much on their mice, knowing I have to replace it with a few years.

  24. @chairraver The switch is a pain to switch. Every mouse I have ever had has issues with this after prolonged use. I just buy a new mouse and move on. The is only USD 29.99 these days. That is worth it since time spent ordering and replacing the switch seems excessive.

  25. The trackball mouse is just amazing. Every machine I have is connected to one of these mice. Why drag and flail your arm around a table all day like a savage, when you can just use your thumb to navigate like a boss.

  26. So, I gave a spin and there are a few bugs like newly installed apps not showing up in the all apps list. When fix it, they will really fix it along with other issues and make 20.04 awesome. I nuked and paved and just installed for the first time outside of a vm. The default theme colors do look better (opinion) and it is a bit more polished than . I just have to get used to not typing in sudo apt...

  27. @mdbekhit @thewk I just installed . It does look better and is much more polished than . I just have to get used to not typing in sudo apt...

  28. @mdbekhit @thewk Hmmm...I did put on a flash drive. Maybe I give that a try and nuke & pave the ssd with that instead of .

  29. It was a toss up between and . I like how uses vanilla , ships on a smaller ISO file, and I can use my 2GB flash drive for it. But, in the end, won because of more available software and built-in support. I had to use a microsd card from a passport phone and plug it into a microsd-to-USB adapter that I had laying around from a kit. It actually worked and saved me from having to buy more flash drives. Now, on to !

  30. Just installed alarm system at home today. It took quite some time, but will save a lot of money each month.

  31. The weirdest paradigm shift happened last night. I was gaming and ended up buying SimCity 3000 from gog.com for 9.99 USD. It installed and played well, but wasn't as enjoyable as 0 A.D. That has to be the best free game available on Linux and Windows. The add-ons or mods really extend the fun in this masterpiece.

  32. After literally years of mulling it over, I finally ordered a home security system. I know it's not , but it will replace my expensive home system. That useless extension called actually helped and recommended a promotion code SIMPLI30CAM which brought my total down from USD 581.26 to USD 332.12. Never again will I call the extension for browsers useless again!

  33. My company decided to allow telecommuting Monday and now wants all of IT back in-house tomorrow.

  34. I almost lost a recent convert to last weekend. He came from to and wanted me to install . I talked him off the ledge after reconfirming his use case and giving training on , , , and the desktop. It helped to remind him that this was all free and already on his machine. Add up the cost of licensing for and and you are easily in the few hundred USD range. Oh, and don't forget to get a .

  35. @jb I ran on my for years without any issues at all. I don't know of any better ROM for that phone. Go for it.

  36. Even if you're not a developer, give back to the community. I do it by getting people to install and explaining why it's a viable . Also, I run which provides various data elements to the project, enhancing their mapping. It's full of quests that earn you points. Install to contribute to the and projects. All are available on . And always send error/crash reports for any software you use.

  37. @cooper I would suggest against the one from Amazon which has Alexa installed as it may be a slightly different model. The best flashing instructions are on the site. I provided a link below. My name on there is weaponG. I am awaiting for my g7 to arrive still and have written some posts on the forum attempting to get thorough instructions.

  38. @pranav @kev I have been using for about 3 years now and appreciate the privacy when compared to . Also, offers a growing suite of online applications as well.

  39. @namark If you are comfortable running such a distro, then that is your choice. And choices is what makes as an OS amazing. I can't guarantee the safety of the code for or and can't ensure that an update won't temporarily alter the code to perform nefarious acts or surveillance. If you can ensure this, good for you. I would much rather run a distro that comes from a more reputable source, especially given the fact that I have a CHOICE to do so.

  40. @namark I haven't avoided your question. I wouldn't run or despite which license they are under. The GPL3 doesn't mean you can't write malware or software which has reporting capabilities, telemetry, other nefarious actions. It simply insures that the source code is open and can be modified as needed and distributed freely. In fact, the distro is full of such software, although it is intended for penetration testing and not as a daily driver distro.

  41. @namark FOSS is a concept and a philosophy that overlaps and sometimes conflicts with political ideologies. I find it difficult to put full faith in a daily driver distro such as (China) and (North Korea) especially knowing the environment in which they were founded in where the respective government has their hands in practically everything.

  42. As beautiful as is, I can't bring myself to running a distro that comes from one of the most privacy abusive countries on the planet. I'll run a device from , as long as I can run my own ROM on it, but an entire distro is a stretch. This country has modern day concentration camps for and a fetish for state run media and facial recognition. History will not look favorably on any of this. Sure, is , but open source also means .

  43. @fatboy What's worse is the poor developers who had to make Microsoft Edge for Linux.

  44. I'm going to build a retro gaming box with wireless controllers using . Which should I use: or ?
