  1. I finally cleaned up the genres in my Jellyfin music library, thanks to Picard.
I had an issue where Nextcloud wasn't showing me all the folders in the music library, found a way to force rescan then was able to see all folders on my local client and batch edit the metadata with Picard.
Hopefully this will help Jellyfin offer better suggestions when doing auto mixes.

  7. Notes on the native linux apps I've tried.
#vacuumtube the "prove you're not a bot" ruins it
#jellyfin seriously? How is it this broken.
#freetube "bigscreen" mode in name only
    #Stremio choppy video
#kdeconnect no input, not usable as remote
#waydroid a lot of set up, screen tearing

  12. @blainsmith - And if you do go down the self-hosted rabbithole, check out Feishin as a local streaming client that can connect to your server (over a VPN like Tailscale).

  17. @blainsmith - I buy indie stuff from Bandcamp, and more mainstream stuff from Amazon MP3. Obscure stuff, I track down the media and digitize that.

All of it is stored in a Dropbox folder and I use tools like Dropsync to keep the collection sync'ed on my own Jellyfin music server and Android phone running doubleTwist.

It's been great building out my own collection and (private) streaming service.

  22. :haacknet: Haack's Networking :haacknet:

✅️ I am currently in my 20th year in education and over the years I've worked in both secondary and college. I've been a sysadmin longer, having started at the NM Coalition for Literacy in 2000 while finishing college on the "long plan." I pivoted in 2018 back to the private sector and then back again to education in 2022. I've maintained this side company/DBA, Haack's Networking, throughout the entirety and I still have clients to this day that I began with in the early 2000s.

✍️ I've always been struck by the prohibitive cost of software. As a young kid, I remember my father purchased me MetroWorks CodeWarrior for learning C for my LC475 68K mac. I read somewhere in 1992 that I should learn C so that's why I asked for it. Over those next few months, it's hard to explain the frustration I felt at trying to keep the abstractions separated. Open firmware, vs. mac's OS at that time, vs., the IDE and C I was supposed to be learning. It helped at disambiguating abstractions, but was useless at teaching me C. I still suck at C. The package was pretty costly nevertheless.

📻️ While in my early days as a sysadmin, I remember the Adobe suites, Microsoft suites, etc., that we were obligated to keep up to date and purchase for our non-profit. We also had tons of macs, 5 laser printers, early flat panel displays, an early NAS, and a hard firewall (Sonic something). It was not sustainable for this non-profit whatsoever. After the prior Director left - who I still consider a mentor and friend to this day - others took over who made an effort to reduce spending and keep the tech lifts in line with reality. It was slow and painful, but/and I learned that costly is not better.

💡 It turns out that costly is still not better. In the link above, I share floss-based services I freely host for the community. Registration is open; there are associated and differing TOS/COC. I welcome community members to come by and/or join. We have a nice Matrix community and a small but dedicated Masto #community - Costs should not prohibit end users from using compelling solutions. And, of course, those solutions should also respect user freedom. Consider signing up!

  24. Anyone else out there noticing that newer tv series shows on physical bluray discs are pre-encoded already to h264, and the quality is bad? Most bluray movies and older (pre-2024) bluray tv shows on discs were in the raw mpeg2video codecs and had the highest quality. I don't mind paying for my physical bluray media but if this is what the RIAA has in store for us then I'm out.

  26. Has anyone messed with synced lyrics before for music? :soft_thinking: I started playing with Chronograph and swiftly started falling into an LRC file rabbit hole (I haven't played with their new bespoke file format yet).

One thing I can't figure out is how you're meant to denote stanzas. I figured you'd just leave a blank line between stanzas, but I don't see anyone else on LRCLib doing that and Jellyfin ignores empty lines entirely. I figured out you could just put a timecode followed by an empty line and Jellyfin renders it correctly, but I'm not sure if that's the proper way to do it and I don't wanna upload bad LRC files to LRCLib.

Any thoughts on stanzas for LRC files? Should Jellyfin be showing the line breaks, is a timecode followed by an empty line the proper way to do it, or should LRC files just not have a way to denote stanzas? This is super niche so I'm not expecting a reply, but it'd be super appreciated if I got one.

  27. So #Jellyfin on Android wasn't working great for casting from the #RaspberryPi to #ChromecastAudio. I tinkered with my Linux laptop and got mkchromecast working with Strawberry to cast perfectly.

I probably could have just used the web interface for Jellyfin on the laptop, but that would have been too easy.
