@blainsmith - I buy indie stuff from Bandcamp, and more mainstream stuff from Amazon MP3. Obscure stuff, I track down the media and digitize that.

All of it is stored in a Dropbox folder and I use tools like Dropsync to keep the collection sync'ed on my own Jellyfin music server and Android phone running doubleTwist.

It's been great building out my own collection and (private) streaming service.

So, today I found out that #Jellyfin stores its playlists in a really simple .xml format in the folder /config/data/playlists.

And if you just replace all the XML-y garbage with nothing, replace some encoded special characters (like "&") with their plaintext counterparts (in this case, "&"), prefix it with a M3U header and save it with the right file extension, you got yourself a perfectly cromulant M3U playlist.

No vibecoded playlist exporter necessary. Just find, replace and paste.

I've been a sysadmin longer, having started at the NM Coalition for Literacy in 2000 while finishing college on the "long plan." ✍️ I've always been struck by the prohibitive cost of software. As a young kid, I remember my father purchased me MetroWorks CodeWarrior for learning C for my LC475 68K mac. I read somewhere in 1992 that I should learn C so that's why I asked for it. Over those next few months, it's hard to explain the frustration I felt at trying to keep the abstractions separated. Open firmware, vs. mac's OS at that time, vs., the IDE and C I was supposed to be learning. It helped at disambiguating abstractions, but was useless at teaching me C. I still suck at C. The package was pretty costly nevertheless.

📻️ While in my early days as a sysadmin, I remember the Adobe suites, Microsoft suites, etc., that we were obligated to keep up to date and purchase for our non-profit. We also had tons of macs, 5 laser printers, early flat panel displays, an early NAS, and a hard firewall (Sonic something). It was not sustainable for this non-profit whatsoever. After the prior Director left - who I still consider a mentor and friend to this day - others took over who made an effort to reduce spending and keep the tech lifts in line with reality. It was slow and painful, but/and I learned that costly is not better.

Not sure why, but within the LAN I've needed to whitelist all hosts using #Jellyfin clients, otherwise their IP gets blocked by Fail2Ban after about an hour of watching. I fear this would happen to remote viewers too, but not sure I've ever watched more than an hour remotely. No idea if any other remote client services do the same, I've not let them run more than a few minutes.

Is this perhaps a #debian #ufw #Fail2Ban setting I should know about?

Außerdem noch mehrere Alben von Saltatio Mortis und Vogelfrey (beides Mittelalter-Bands) weil E-Gitarren und Dudelsäcke so gut zusammen passen.

Die Alben kann ich dann aus Tidal entfernen und über Finamp hören, sobald sie in Jellyfin verfügbar sind.

I have 2 10tb hard drives that are raid1 and I have docker installed. Oh, and I installed Ubuntu Server because I'm comfortable with Ubuntu already.

My main goal is to make it easy to share and distribute files and store backups and media. I plan on adding #JellyFin at a later date for streaming.

One of the differences I noticed is that each one uses a different dbms. Not a big deal I don't think.

I can finally drop Plex…😉

I was so ready to drop #Plex from my #HomeLab, but there’s one thing holding me back. #JellyFin client, #SwiftFin for #AppleTV is far brom being ready to do it’s job.

It only plays media with experimental features enabled and does not support subtitles…

We will have to wait a bit more.

It seems that the biggest issue for me when it comes to migrating to #Jellyfin on my #homelab, in place of #Plex, is that it's more reliant on transcoding, somehow?

On Plex, I could easily completely disable transcoding as none of my devices - regardless of TV via the app for #Android TV, desktop via their corresponding desktop app, or mobile via #iOS or Android app, etc. ever needed transcoding and all of them does Direct Play for my media just fine.

For Jellyfin, for the same media, it seems to always be transcoding (presumably for technical reasons) on the web UI, Android app, or iOS app (Jellyfin). The desktop app can do direct play perfectly fine, I assume the iOS native app #Swiftfin can too (tho it seems pretty buggy and basic in functionality to be that usable). Direct play seems to also be more important/vital than on Plex since transcoding on Jellyfin somehow consistently desyncs the subtitle after some time watching or scrubbing through the content.

I can accept not being able to watch Jellyfin content on mobile I suppose, and exclusively use the desktop app instead of the browser when on desktop, but I wonder if the TV clients on Android or #Apple TV face the same issue too? Also, there doesn't seem to be a simple option to globally disable transcoding is there?

Took out the #AppleTV for one last ditch effort to try and force myself to like it. #Netflix app played a 4K movie but then stepped down in quality - like I had lower bandwidth or something. Endtasked it, started again, same deal. Endtasked and this time it played in proper quality. For at least 30 min. Googled the issue and apparently it’s a known and longstanding problem, NF and Apple have some sort of feud going on and NF doesn’t play nicely with Apple’s ATV app. Knew that already.

Next, installed #Emby on my Pc and tried the Emby app. Sort of worked but did not display Dolby Video file. The usual green/purple tint. Ditto #Jellyfin (aka “#SwiftFin” on ATV). #Plex works. Cannot try #Kodi because unavailable on ATV.

I cannot like this thing. Went to #GoogleTV built into my TV. Interface is just as fast. JF plays #DolbyVideo. Weirdly Emby goes into trial mode, it’s supposed to be free but I don’t care because it is not better than JF.

Will sell the ATV. Sad, but it is what it is.

For iOS I tried #Jellyfin Mobile and #Swiftfin.

The “official” one seems to be just a web-wrapper. It's barely working, on a smartphone and not a pleasant experience. Most of the time it wasn't able to play media, or even get the UI drawn which often takes multiple attempts at reloading to work.

Swiftfin seems a native/API client which is snappy. It's also a minimum viable player at best but promising.
