  2. It's kinda sad to see BigTech tainting technology to the point where people feel it's best to drop the tech all together.

The "comeback of physical media" is an example. People again investing money in CD's and CD players, because they want to "own rather than rent".

Oki, you at least own the CD, but it's especially bad when this appear to span to DVD's as well. You own a physical DVD disk, sure, but we should remember region locks, content protection and all the stuff that makes your ability to play the content of a DVD a "borrowed time" experience.

But the CD marked was dominated by the same kinda companies that now run streaming. Why desire to go back to this?

Why not turn to sites like #bandcamp where you can buy music from those that make it?

It seems like the "time in the middle", the time where we carried an mp3 collection with us, is forgotten. With the new capacities on storage, we can have the audio in better quality than CD.

Also, software like #Jellyfin exists to stream our OWN music.

  3. I updated my jellyfin instance to version 12.0 and its cleaned up all the dead links to all the media I removed and has started ingesting new media again. If you've been having issues with jellyfin not ingesting new media/not removing old media, I recommend updating to the latest version #jellyfin

  4. I was all excited to upgrade to Jellyfin 12 tonight...only to find the upgrade fails catastrophically with fatal database errors.

Apparently a fix is in progress, so I guess it's back to 10.11.11 for me.

Maybe hold off upgrading to 12 for now unless you adventurous, and make sure to back up your data!

  5. I wonder if there's a way to make #Jellyfin wait when new media is added into monitored folders, before commencing the metadata extract process. Like 10 mins after the last file has arrived or something like that.

  6. #Jellyfin question

New version broke something for me. I understand why but I need a new approach.

Normally you have to put episodes in a specific show folder to get it picked up. But previous version you could dump a file into the root of the shows folder and it would at least show in the recent episodes list. For ephemeral episodes who cares?

    Now they don't show anywhere.

Trying to think of the best place to put ephemeral episodes and have them show up easily

  8. i have updated to Jellyfin 12 but seems to be missing a major feature - i used to go to users, select a user and go to their profile and use 'quick connect' - this has now been removed? As the server admin it was only way to get some users on to system, why on earth remove it for admins? No way i can now login to test accounts or change exiting accounts without it.

  9. @Mountaineer Great to hear. This #jellyfin has been a long time coming. But I'm waiting for the 12.1 or 12.0.1 release. I want to see the tires kicked a bit first.

  12. Self-hosting private media with Jellyfin and the ability to program simple scripts to help with daily tasks make me happy.

I recently added my old Finnish Moomin collection to my Jellyfin and had to write my own nfo files to tell the system what's different from the Japanese original series.

A bit of shell scripting, a bit of Javascript to format data from Wikipedia and a bit of Python to put all that together.

  20. Happy to report a successful upgrade day, with both #Jellyfin 12.0 and #Nextcloud doing the upgrades without incident, although I have hit the threshold where NC upgrades can only be done with updater.phar from a command line.

  25. After a month of testing I can say that this player is the best I've ever found for self hosted servers such as navidrome and jellyfin (it also has plex but I have abandoned). On the site reports that there is also a linux desktop version but not yet tested. That will be my paradise for self hosted music 🥹

  26. :haacknet: Haack's Networking :haacknet:

✅️ I am currently in my 20th year in education and over the years I've worked in both secondary and college. I've been a sysadmin longer, having started at the NM Coalition for Literacy in 2000 while finishing college on the "long plan." I pivoted in 2018 back to the private sector and then back again to education in 2022. I've maintained this side company/DBA, Haack's Networking, throughout the entirety and I still have clients to this day that I began with in the early 2000s.

✍️ I've always been struck by the prohibitive cost of software. As a young kid, I remember my father purchased me MetroWorks CodeWarrior for learning C for my LC475 68K mac. I read somewhere in 1992 that I should learn C so that's why I asked for it. Over those next few months, it's hard to explain the frustration I felt at trying to keep the abstractions separated. Open firmware, vs. mac's OS at that time, vs., the IDE and C I was supposed to be learning. It helped at disambiguating abstractions, but was useless at teaching me C. I still suck at C. The package was pretty costly nevertheless.

📻️ While in my early days as a sysadmin, I remember the Adobe suites, Microsoft suites, etc., that we were obligated to keep up to date and purchase for our non-profit. We also had tons of macs, 5 laser printers, early flat panel displays, an early NAS, and a hard firewall (Sonic something). It was not sustainable for this non-profit whatsoever. After the prior Director left - who I still consider a mentor and friend to this day - others took over who made an effort to reduce spending and keep the tech lifts in line with reality. It was slow and painful, but/and I learned that costly is not better.

💡 It turns out that costly is still not better. In the link above, I share floss-based services I freely host for the community. Registration is open; there are associated and differing TOS/COC. I welcome community members to come by and/or join. We have a nice Matrix community and a small but dedicated Masto #community - Costs should not prohibit end users from using compelling solutions. And, of course, those solutions should also respect user freedom. Consider signing up!

  27. TIL if you go through and manually update a bunch of genre tags for music which is in your #Jellyfin, the secret button to get it to pull those tags directly from the files is "Replace all metadata," not "Scan for new and updated files."

I assumed the latter would work because these files are updated, but maybe my Jellyfin is buggy, or maybe it's working as expected since the genre metadata had already been filled in by a remote server.

Either way, this has opened a new front in the one-person Jellyfin vs #Navidrome war in my house. Honestly, Navidrome is lightweight enough that I might still keep it just because, even if I go back to Jellyfin for a lot of my listening.

  28. #Jellyfin #SSO plugin github.com/9p4/jellyfin-plugin has been archived ("I'm tired of working on this after all the years", which, fair).
But it looks like it was forked into github.com/eddymoulton/jellyfi and development contiues, limiting itself to #OIDC but without #SAML
    Nice!

  29. I have rebuild some of the services on #Proxmox.

    I have working:
    - #HomeAssistant
    - #HomeBridge
    - #ADGuard
    - #NginxProxyManager
    - #Transmission
    - #Jellyfin

I have also deployed some more, like #Seerr, #Radarr, #Sonarr, #Prowlarr - but they are yet to be fully configured.

A bit tricky to mount one network share across multiple containers, but managed to get along with systemd mount mechanism.

    It’s now 3am… I guess it’s time to go to sleep…And yet, I’m watching #StarCraft replays…😅

  30. Checking both #Zorinos and #mintOS for compatibility with my main use cases: #Homebridge and #Jellyfin. So now I wonder which has better disk management, because mount points in Ubuntu have been a nightmare for me in that regard. Trying to specify where an external disk would mount so Jellyfin could see them reliably got me into a bricked state once.
Please don’t come at me telling me editing FSTAB is “easy”. It is NOT.

  31. 🔴 Home-Server mit Umprel
    ~~ Erfahrungsbericht ~~
