I had a dream that Windows 8 used raw IP stuff and the notifications on the lockscreen and stuff were encrypted with the user's password to prevent replay attacks if someone's notification database was stolen while they weren't logged in. Hace unas semanas hablaba de lo absurdo que era que Microsoft llevase casi 15 años inmerso en el proceso de migración desde el Panel de control hasta la sección de Configuración del Sistema. Y ahora me encuentro con varios artículos hablando de las razones para ello: compatibilidad con hardware antiguo y evitar dolores de cabeza al departamento de soporte técnico.

Nada sorprendente en realidad, pero a mí todo me suena a excusa. No haría falta eliminarlo completamente sino migrar todas sus opciones a Configuración mientras el Panel de control se deja oculto, con todas sus antiuas utilidades. Siempre disponible para quien sepa y quiera acceder a él.

No seré yo quien promueva la extinción del Panel de control con el que siempre me he sentido tan cómodo, pero me parece bochornoso que sigan desmantelándolo pasito a pasito 14 años después del lanzamiento de Windows 8 con su sección moderna de Configuración.

No tengo claro si ir tan lentamente es la única forma de evolucionar un Sistema Operativo lleno de usuarios apegados a las viejas costumbres o es que falta liderazgo para proponer algo que rompa de una vez por todas con el modelo original, pero me parece muy mala señal en cualquiera de los dos casos. Quizás esto cambie radicalmente cuando la IA domine la evolución de Windows.

Hello #Fediverse, today’s OS-tans are two members of the Madobe family: Yū Madobe (窓辺ゆう) and Ai Madobe (窓辺あい), the Windows 8 and 8.1 mascots in Japan!

Yū and Ai debuted in Japan in 2012 as part of the Windows 8 Pro DSP Commemorative Packs created by Windows Navi+. These packs included exclusive system sounds and wallpapers

The sisters share a birthdate of November 18, 1996. Both are the same height at 152 cm, which is 8 cm shorter than Nanami, but their personalities set them apart.

Both sisters struggle with sports but excelled in tech. Their voices were provided by talented actresses Asuka Nishi (Yū) and Nao Tamura (Ai), who even sang together in promotional tracks like *Whatever the Future Holds*.

For those who love MSN/Windows Live Messenger, it has been revived! This site has been around for awhile, but I thought I should mention it for those who don't know about it and also for those who are tired of modern messaging programs which are often inaccessible. Note that you must create a free account with them and cannot use an old hotmail address or whatever you used with Microsoft's version. This is the same software, but modified to work on their servers. For that reason, even if you have the original on your computer, you should install theirs. There is a way to patch an existing one, but why go through all the trouble? Escargot works on Windows, from XP through 11, and it is completely accessible with NVDA, minus the games, which never worked with screen readers anyway. There are IOS and Android versions, but I have no idea how well they work in general, let alone with VoiceOver or Talkback. If you wish to add me, I am [email protected]. The site can be found here.

Observation regarding my Linux journey, neither here nor there.

When Windows launched their app store, I ignored it. 1) b/c metro apps were maximized for tablets and awkward on PCs. 2) Even then I was skeptic of Microsoft. I bet I used the app store maybe twice in the 12 years I had access to it.

Over here on Linux, the software manager is my first stop when looking for stuff. It's easier, sure. But also because there's trust.

I bought a tablet in 2018 to bring it with me to Ghana instead of my office computer when I was holding training sessions about Organic farming and Aquaponics/Hydroponics farming.

That was my worst investment ever.

ChuWi 10 pro with dual boot window 8 and android, I thought would be great to be able to use for presentation and connect to my phone and mobile projector.

Windows 8 broke immediately and it became unusable. Android can't be updated and its sluggish.

Trying to turn it into android TV or something similar to be able to watch streaming movies on my home TV (48" 4K that is kind of smart). The main reason I want to use it is because I want to use my VPN, add blockers and remote keyboard to make it easier to enjoy movies and TV shows.

Damn, it is difficult to do. The platform is no longer supported, the Android can't be updated and using Firefox to access streaming sites is too slow for such an old device.

I hate getting rid of it, because it works, but I am afraid I can only use it for social media and web surfing.

Windows 7 can still be patched — ironically — thanks to @kirb who runs the "Legacy Update" https://legacyupdate.net

It’s important to note that you won’t receive new updates — rather, "Legacy Update" restores all the content Microsoft removed when they ended support for Windows 7.

Legacy Update is compatible with Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11 (including their equivalent Windows Server editions).

In honor of Windows 8’s 12th anniversary which I missed (and not doing one of those posts for a long time), I'm doing one for Yū Madobe and Ai Madobe, the official mascots and OS-tans for Windows 8/8.1 who were created for special bundles by Windows Navi+ that came with some copies of Windows 8 during its launch in Japan, known as the Windows 8 Pro DSP Release Commemorative Packs.

Yū is the quieter older sister with a love for gadgets, a hidden Otaku at heart, and someone who thrives on the latest digital trends and has the shorter hair. Her younger sister, Ai, is cheerful and loves exploring what’s new and popular among junior high trends, especially anything tech-related and is the one with longer hair. Both share a birthdate of November 18, 1996, connecting them to the Windows lineage as distant relatives of Nanami Madobe! Fun fact: The sisters nearly tied in the 2012 Akihabara Moe Character Contest!

Many believe that one character was meant to represent Windows 8 and the other Windows 8.1 although both debuted well before anyone anticipated the release of 8.1. Another theory suggests one represents Windows 8, while the other stands for RT; however, both were actually featured in the promotion of Windows 8 Pro in the Commemorative Packs. Since they were also used to promote Windows 8.1 later on, it’s more accurate to view them as representing Windows 8 and 8.1 collectively.
