I really want to find a mobile handset that I can install a de-googled OS or Linux alternative. Currently in Japan so while there is an amazing amount of pre-owned devices here the ones that I can easily install PostmarketOS or Lineage on are not easy to come by or cost more than I want to spend.

R.I.P. mein geliebtes #Lenovo Tab4.

In order to synchronise, please upgrade your application to version 3.7.0+
- Paketierte Version entfernt:
sudo pacman -Rns joplin- Den offiziellen Installer im Pre-release-Modus ausgeführt:
wget -O - https://raw.githubusercontent.com/laurent22/joplin/dev/Joplin_install_and_update.sh \
| bash -s -- --prereleaseJoplin gestartet → Sync sofort wieder da.

Today I learned
#Joplin “Cross-platform” apparently means “let’s hope your package sources happen to update at the same time.”
Setup
- Desktop: #CachyOS with Joplin 3.6.14 from
pacman - Sync target: a local folder, then synced via #OpenCloud to #TrueNAS SCALE
- Mobile: #LineageOS tablet + #CalyxOS on a #SHIFTphone 8, with Joplin from #FDroid
At some point, the desktop stopped syncing and threw this at me:
In order to synchronise, please upgrade your application to version 3.7.0+
Minor issue: Joplin 3.7 was not in the CachyOS/Arch repositories yet. It was available in the AUR, but I deliberately keep that disabled.
With a little help from #Perplexity, the culprit became clear:
- Joplin 3.7 introduces a new sync format
- The F-Droid apps had already moved to 3.7 and migrated the shared sync target
- The desktop, stuck on 3.6.14, no longer understood that format and sulked accordingly
So, in short: no OpenCloud bug, no broken local sync path — just release-channel chaos between the repository package and F-Droid.
Options
- Roll back the mobile apps and restore the old sync state from backups
- Temporarily upgrade the desktop to Joplin 3.7 until Arch/CachyOS catches up
I gave the package manager a little holiday instead:
- Created one more backup of the desktop profile
- Removed the packaged version:
sudo pacman -Rns joplin- Installed the official pre-release build:
wget -O - https://raw.githubusercontent.com/laurent22/joplin/dev/Joplin_install_and_update.sh \
| bash -s -- --prereleaseStarted Joplin → sync worked immediately again. Mobile and desktop are finally speaking the same language.
Now I’m waiting for the Arch/CachyOS package to reach 3.7+, so I can switch back from installer-script circus to a properly packaged build. - Desktop: #CachyOS with Joplin 3.6.14 from

Last week I noticed my phone had popped out of it's case a little bit so I pulled it out and cleaned the case, was wiping off the phone and something didn't feel right... the back was pushed off in the middle! So I ordered a new phone and and then decided to get a battery for the old one for a spare. Took about an hour but the back was already half off. I didn't put new adhesive on the back. LineageOS on this one, GrapheneOS on the new one.

First day of #FOSSY was great. #3GoodThings
1. Learned about @ultramarine GNU/Linux, a #Fedora based #GNU / #Linux distro. My only disappointment is that the OS uses #Discord exclusively.
2. #FSF #LibrePhone project is going well and is still making progress that will help #LineageOS, #postmarketOS and other #FreeSoftware mobile OSes.
3. @conservancy is selling #OpenWRT routers. Free routers are an essential item in every home. Don't let your ISP control your home network. Can't wait for tomorrow!

General usage wise, I'mma be honest, it's pretty slow for 2026 standards even when modded with a custom rom w/o gapps. It lags a little on the UI, storage is limited to 16 gigs, and browsing the internet with Ironfox is fucking miserable cos of that Anubis thingy. Literally didn't think about old but still working devices
Disabling Javascript and large media elements seem to help a ton. The internet is dead and it's literally a bloated, stinking corpse of what it used to be.
What the fuck am I thinking about, lol. Anyway, software wise it's pretty much abandoned. Even on XDA forums there seems to be not much development or discussion happening with this phone anymore. Doesn't even have official LineageOS support and isn't even listed on postmarketOS so yeah :(
Sorry on5xelte, but you're pretty much forgotten by everybody else, but with you on my side, I'll take care of ya, till your battery gives out :)

Sometimes it just hits me how different my relationship with technology really is compared to others.
I've grown up in a family that valued privacy, and then my very first friend group from early on exclusively consisted of gay – later #trans – autistic furry hackers. I've never known a life of being careless about #technology and #privacy, and a DIY mentality wasn't counterculture, it was just the way #tech worked.
To me it had been completely normal that my phone would obviously have some #degoogled #LineageOS on it (or rather, #CyanogenMod back in the day). It was just part of the setup process. Same with some #Linux flavour everywhere.
Self-hosting services was just the way to get those services. I never had any cloud accounts anywhere. I had always been on my girlfriend's Nextcloud or e-mail infrastructure or whatever, later my own. I always self-hosted my game servers. My websites would never be on any random hoster.
This came with a bunch of habits and quirks I just accepted as part of the tech experience. I am used to not getting any notifications on mobile, for example. I always have cookies and site data disabled out of habit.
I don't buy smart devices that I haven't vetted and rather choose the 'dumb' version, i. e. an infrared remote instead of a bluetooth one. My first instinct when looking for software is to check the repos or the Arch Wiki/FSF Directory and such sites. I haven't used Google in forever.
All this isn't to brag or whatever at all, it's just to illustrate what my worldview is like and how I grew up. I'm not even super intense about all this; I still watch YouTube videos for example and I (have to) use some proprietary software, e. g. for work. I'm not RMS, yknow?
...
But imagine growing up like this, and now it's 2026 and you see someone use a phone. The sheer contrast??
I see people live a life where their most used app on their phone is now ChatGPT or Gemini or whatever. They use it more often than a search engine, they micromanage chats so it 'remembers' all of their emotions and thoughts. They ask for life advice, questions, make it write e-mails, everything.
They are on Whatsapp, Instagram, Snapchat, Tiktok and whatnot and actually use all of those features I've only ever heard of second hand, such as a "for you page".
They have YouTube accounts and actually are able to comment, like and subscribe – that's something that feels weird to even think about to me as someone resigned to passive use of such sites!
They have all the flashy features just available to them, like these live notifications, voice control, smart connectivity and whatnot that I accepted long ago I just "couldn't get".
It's such a different life to live, it's almost like a different culture.

⚠️ Don't update from /e/OS 4.0 to 4.1.1! The main reason is that @murena removed #Seedvault. They replaced it with their own backup app (based on Seedvault as I've heard) that only can backup to their own cloud! The problem with this is that you now have to pay for a backup, because who has a backup below 1GB. 🤷🏻
Yes, you've heard it right, #Murena goes vendor lock-in! It's now 100% clear that it's not about a Google alternative, but about their own payed services (what is just a customized Nextcloud).
There are also some other bugs, that only will be fixed in 4.2 or 4.3, but nothing about the Seedvault removal. So people can't choose their backup location anymore. Multiple people asked on their forum, but no definitive answer was given. See here: https://community.e.foundation/t/feedback-for-v4-1-1.
This is not their first time they messed it up. They also removed Material You, so they force you to use blue accent colours.
Hopefully someone knows how to safely migrate to #LineageOS or another reliable custom ROM for a #Fairphone 6?

I apparently had reinstalled/wiped the ROM of a phone where I had previously installed play services and logged in. I swear I never enabled any find my phone shenanigans, but after reinstalling, I had a funny situation where I could install apps via "adb", but not on the phone, because of a "Secure FRP" mode.
Apparently the modern #lineageos recovery has a "wipe-frp" script you can run using ADB: "adb shell wipe-frp".
Bizarre anti-consumer features I swear.
