Nach einem Update von #iodeOS 7.4 auf 7.5 startet das Fairphone 4 nicht mehr.

Ein entgoogeltes Betriebssystem,, das nur auf google Hardware läuft, finde ich hirnrissig.

Zudem macht graphene andauernd andere Betriebssysteme schlecht, was ich abstossend finde.

Ich bin mit #IodeOS glücklich. Es läuft auf einem #fairphone was mir auch wichtig ist.

Ansonsten ein sehr guter Artikel, danke dafür und auch fürs Teilen.

Ich habe es noch geschafft, eine Runde mit dem Fahrrad zu fahren, bevor es zu (mini) regnen begann. Außerdem habe ich einen Bekannten im Krankenhaus besucht.

What we learned in #Minnesota the past several months is that the "easiest path of access" by **certain groups that are very "cold" sounding** looking to track you down regardless of your rights is from the "Big Tech connected phone" right in your pocket.

Sadly we aren't alone.

The time is past due for a move away from Big Tech and a move to #iodéOS from @iode!

File entpackt, #fairphone4 in den Fastboot-Modus gebracht (Bootloader war schon vorher geöffnet) und ./flash-all.sh ausgeführt.

Nach dem Flashen fragt die Installroutine auch gleich, ob der Bootloader geschlossen werden soll. Vorbildlich.

Und Reboot mit #iodeOS 7.4 erfolgreich. 🎉

Der Installer von #iodeOS unterstützt das #fairphone4 nicht. Also machen wir es auf die klassische Art via Terminal und fastboot.

Update: testing device has arrived, in excellent condition (maybe previously unsold, it is pristine except for very slight screen burn-in). Currently going back-and-forth *and back-and-forth* with OnePlus to get an unlock code for it. @iode custom build is ready and waiting!

Forgive my kvetching, but it drives me nuts that #AOSP-based #Android OSes always treat hyphenated words as words.

For example, if you type in "apple-cart," you get a red squiggly underline and it tries to recommend replacing it with "apricot" or something. The only way around it is to add every. single. hyphenated. word. you. use. into the dictionary. 😮‍💨

It's been a constant, daily annoyance for the past five and a half years, and the only fix is to install something like GBoard and use its spelling correction engine or whatever you call it, and I'd rather not.

I've experienced it on #CalyxOS and #IodéOS, but I don't recall if #GrapheneOS has the same issue, because I only tried it briefly.

Es hat mich zwar viel Recherchearbeit gekostet, aber ich hab es endlich geschafft mein Tablet zu entgoogeln: bye bye google, Warm welcome for iodeOS.
Es läuft super rund, schneller als vorher und ich vermisse nichts: #DUTgemacht #IodeOS
Wer noch ein Projekt für den den heutigen #DIT sucht, kann auf https://iode.tech/ suchen, ob euer Telefon oder Tablet unterstützt wird. Bei unterstützter Hardware auch super einfach per Webinstaller (trotzdem das Backup nicht vergesen).

Also ich würde an deiner Stelle gar keine K.I.-Software nutzen wollen, sondern sie aus bestimmten Gründen boykottieren und versuche es doch mal mit den Open Source Apps von Fossify, was der "Nachfolger" von den Simple Mobile Tools ist. Diese Apps verwende ich unter einem freien Android (iodéOS).

Das Pixel 2 XL meiner Frau läuft derzeit mit iodeOS, einer inoffiziellen Beta-Version für dieses Modell, die MicroG integriert hat. Diese Version befindet sich noch im Entwicklungsstadium und ist daher möglicherweise nicht vollständig ausgereift. Dabei gab es immer wieder Probleme mit der Stabilität der mobilen Daten und der Netzverbindung. Zusätzlich gibt es auch Schwierigkeiten bei der Telefonie: Meine Frau ist oft schwer zu verstehen oder sogar gar nicht erreichbar. Das ist natürlich sehr ärgerlich und unpraktisch.

Diese Probleme könnten aber auch an der Beta-Version von iodeOS liegen, denn Beta-Software enthält oft noch Fehler bei der Netzwerkintegration oder Modemsteuerung. Das ist allerdings eine Vermutung meinerseits, basierend auf dem Wissen über Beta-Versionen und Erfahrungsberichte.

Deshalb habe ich mich informiert und versucht, die technischen Hintergründe besser zu verstehen.

Was ich herausgefunden habe

Nach meinen Recherchen und intensivem Lesen im Netz bin ich zu dem Schluss gekommen, dass die offiziellen Google Apps (GApps) in der Regel eine bessere Netzwerkintegration bieten als MicroG. Das liegt daran, dass die Google Play Services proprietäre Schnittstellen verwenden, die eng mit den Mobilfunkanbietern zusammenarbeiten und Funktionen wie Roaming, VoLTE oder WLAN-Call besser unterstützen. Gerade solche Telefonie-Funktionen sind oft auf diese proprietären Dienste angewiesen. Das ist jedoch eine Vermutung meinerseits, da der Quellcode der Google Play Services nicht öffentlich ist und genauere technische Details nicht vollständig einsehbar sind.

MicroG ist eine freie Nachbildung dieser Dienste und bietet zwar mehr Datenschutz, weil es keine exakten Kopien aller Funktionen enthält, aber dadurch kommt es offenbar öfter zu Problemen bei mobilen Daten, der Netzstabilität und eben auch bei der Telefonie.

GApps auf Custom ROMs – funktioniert das?

Trotz der Tatsache, dass LineageOS ein Custom ROM ist und Google die Play Services nicht direkt mitliefert, kann man offizielle GApps-Pakete (wie MindTheGapps, die von LineageOS offiziell empfohlen werden) problemlos nachinstallieren. Diese enthalten die echten Google Play Services, keine Nachbildungen. Technisch bieten sie daher dieselbe Netzwerkintegration wie auf einem originalen Stock-ROM.

Die Unterschiede in der Netzqualität und Telefonie kommen dann eher von der Custom ROM selbst, den verwendeten Treibern oder der Modem-Firmware.

Mein Plan und meine Erwartungen

Ich werde jetzt LineageOS ausprobieren, weil es eine offizielle Version für das Pixel 2 XL ist, was mir eine gewisse Stabilität und Aktualität verspricht. Vorerst werde ich LineageOS mit MicroG (LineageOS for MicroG) testen, da ich die erhöhte Privatsphäre schätze. Falls weiterhin Probleme mit mobilen Daten oder Telefonie auftreten, werde ich die offiziell empfohlene MindTheGapps-Version installieren, um von der besseren Netzkompatibilität zu profitieren.

Ich bin mir noch nicht sicher, ob das so funktioniert oder ob das besser wird, aber es erscheint mir der sinnvollste Weg, um meiner Frau ein stabiles und sicheres Handy bereitzustellen.

Interessanterweise kann #iodeOS bei deutlich mehr Geräten auch einen gesperrten #Bootloader anbieten als #eOS, obwohl beide auf #LineageOS basieren. Und die Unterstützung für Pixel Geräte ist beeindruckend. /e/OS unterstützt mehr Geräte, aber man muss dort bei einigen Herstellern mehr Kompromisse eingehen.
Ich habe mir jetzt noch ein gebrauchtes Pixel 8a besorgt, um iodeOS in Ruhe testen zu können. Das Gerät bekommt danach meine Frau. Und das Kind dann das 6 Pro. Damit wären wir auf Jahre ausgestattet. Danach hoffe ich einfach, dass der Markt für nachhaltige Smartphones mehr Auswahl und alltagstaugliche Qualität bietet.
