Today I released version 1.1.0 of vibeSounds.

The vibeSounds project includes two apps for Ubuntu Touch: a music player and an audiobook player. Both apps work with media files stored on the device using a folder-based system. As the project name suggests, they were created using vibe coding — that is, generated by an AI under human supervision. This experiment, designed to explore the capabilities of modern LLMs, has produced two apps that I believe are quite useful.

vibeMusic

- A music player that can handle even several thousand music files with ease.
- Grouping by albums, artists, genres, years/decades
- Filter function for all lists.
- Playlists
- Shuffle & Repeat
- Sleep timer (implemented in a somewhat unconventional way due to system limitations)
- View for the tags of the currently playing file.

vibeAudiobooks

- Audiobook player
- Views by audiobooks and authors
- Saves the playback position for each audiobook separately.
- Configurable rewind time when pausing an audiobook.
- Audiobooks can be grouped into series.
- Bookmarks can be set in audiobooks.
- Sleep timer (implemented in a somewhat unconventional way due to system limitations)

Neither app is listed in the Open Store yet, as there is still discussion about why the apps need (read) access to the file system.

If you’d like to try them out, you can find installable binaries in the repository, in addition to the source code.

Back in ~2016, I installed #UbuntuTouch on my Google Nexus 6 (2013). Some apps didn't run and there was poor documentation, so I abandoned the project.

This weekend, Ubuntu finally closed the no-documentation bug. Yes, ten years later! I must have been subscribed to the bug. My email got flooded by ex-Ubuntu engineers reminiscing about the project.

Fiven that Google has decided to "boil the frog" by slowly closing off Android, with a significant move towards this happening this September, and given that might impact the development of degoogled AOSP ROM's as well, I've been testing out Ubuntu Touch as a daily driver once again.

I used "UT" as my mobile OS on my daily drivers from 2018-2022, but then carriers in the USA required VoLTE to make calls, which UT did not suppprt at the time. But the past year VoLTE support was added to a number of devices, and tons of other improvements have been made recently for the latest 24.04.2 I am testing now, and which should be released to the public soon. There are a few issies which make this not quite as easy to use as my Android phone still, but grateful for the devs at UBports & the UT community for how many fixes & new features have added in the past few months.

Google’s cancelled Pixel 2 Tablet may never see the light of day, but it was far enough along in the development process that a new leak suggests it would have been… a pretty unsurprising update.

One thing that was surprising today was the speed with which Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger announced not only that he was stepping down… but that his resignation was effective immediately and that Intel had already selected two executives to serve as interim co-CEOs while searching for a permanent replacement. Given the year Intel has had, it’s not shocking that Gelsinger is leaving though. I just didn’t expect it to happen this quickly.
