Today I released version 1.1.0 of vibeSounds.
The vibeSounds project includes two apps for Ubuntu Touch: a music player and an audiobook player. Both apps work with media files stored on the device using a folder-based system. As the project name suggests, they were created using vibe coding — that is, generated by an AI under human supervision. This experiment, designed to explore the capabilities of modern LLMs, has produced two apps that I believe are quite useful.
vibeMusic
- A music player that can handle even several thousand music files with ease.
- Grouping by albums, artists, genres, years/decades
- Filter function for all lists.
- Playlists
- Shuffle & Repeat
- Sleep timer (implemented in a somewhat unconventional way due to system limitations)
- View for the tags of the currently playing file.vibeAudiobooks
- Audiobook player
- Views by audiobooks and authors
- Saves the playback position for each audiobook separately.
- Configurable rewind time when pausing an audiobook.
- Audiobooks can be grouped into series.
- Bookmarks can be set in audiobooks.
- Sleep timer (implemented in a somewhat unconventional way due to system limitations)Neither app is listed in the Open Store yet, as there is still discussion about why the apps need (read) access to the file system.
If you’d like to try them out, you can find installable binaries in the repository, in addition to the source code.
Have fun with them and stay curious

- Playlists
- Shuffle & Repeat
- Sleep Timer (systembedingt etwas exotisch umgesetzt)
- Ansicht für die Tags der abgespielten Datei.vibeAudiobooks
- Audiobook Player
- Ansichten nach Audiobooks und Autor:innen
- Speichert die Abspielposition für jedes Hörbuch separat.
- Konfigurierbare Zurückspulzeit beim Stoppen eines Hörbuchs.
- Hörbücher können zu Serien gruppiert werden.
- Bookmarks lassen sich in Hörbüchern setzen.
- Sleep Timer (systembedingt etwas exotisch umgesetzt)

Back in ~2016, I installed #UbuntuTouch on my Google Nexus 6 (2013). Some apps didn't run and there was poor documentation, so I abandoned the project.
This weekend, Ubuntu finally closed the no-documentation bug. Yes, ten years later! I must have been subscribed to the bug. My email got flooded by ex-Ubuntu engineers reminiscing about the project.
This caught the attention of the tech press!

Ubuntu on phones now receive initial VoLTE support
If you are using one of the supported Ubuntu Phone devices, such as a Volla 22 (contains a MediaTek Helio G85 SoC) or a Fairphone 5 (contains a Qualcomm QCM6490 SoC), you can now use VoLTE on your device.
The necessary modifications for both SoC vendors have been added to both the Noble Numbat version and the Focal Fossa version so that VoLTE works on these devices that have Ubuntu Touch installed. However, for other phones, such as Xiaomi and Google Pixel phones, it’s on the developer who created the port to modify it so that it works with VoLTE.
While they have tested the functionality with both high-quality voice calls and SMS messages, they have reported issues when working with MMS. In the status bar, if your phone shows VoLTE, this means that you can have high-quality voice calls.
In order to try out VoLTE support, you must make sure that:
- your phone is running the latest version of Ubuntu Touch,
- your phone supports VoLTE, and
- your carrier and your cellular plan support VoLTE.

Didn’t know that Ubuntu ran on phones- I legitimately didn’t- That’s pretty interesting. Although, personally, I don’t really like Ubuntu...
