"When Patrick Russell decided to start Factory 3 in 2017, his goal was to create an affordable place for crafts people to do their work in Portland. He bought the building at 103 St. James Street in 2021.
" 'From 2014 to 2021, creatives were being pushed out of the city,' he said, as he showed off the array of equipment his maker space holds inside its warehouse walls. He found much of the machinery online, slightly used. Now, dozens of Factory 3 members and class participants get to build skills using a planer, a bench drill, or a metal inert gas welding tool.
"A new air compressor and a plasma cutter that’s like a 'light saber,' he said, will be part of the available machinery soon.
"In Welding 1, students can learn how to create clean weld beads for about $180. Factory 3 offers the 3.5-hour class two or three times a month. 'Factory 3 has taught over a thousand how to weld,' Patrick Russell said."

Hallo Welt, wir sind zurück aus den Sommerferien und haben uns heute bereits zum zweiten Mal im neuen #Hackerspace von @GoeNyx getroffen, wo wir seit dieser Woche endlich Internet haben . Heute haben wir neue Jugendliche begrüßt und uns mit Mengenlehre beschäftigt. Währenddessen wurde unser #3dDrucker kalibriert.

We got a new table saw and had the chance to test its additional safety feature, which helps prevent injuries from contact with body parts.
No wiener was seriously harmed in this experiment! We hope to integrate the saw into our current setup soon.

I'm going through old projects to add to my website and remembered that I co-founded the fizzPOP hackerspace/makerspace in Birmingham in 2009.
One of the events we did was the Improbable Machine which was basically a Rube Goldberg machine. It only successfully ran once.

Crowd Supply's annual flagship event, #Teardown2026, was the biggest and most ambitious yet! This celebration of #OpenSource #HardwareHacking took place in #CrowdSupply’s home base of Portland, and featured 41 talks, workshops, and skill shares, 47 demo tables and installations, plus over 450 delightful attendees. Satellite events included food trucks, a hangout at the Ctrl-H #hackerspace, and a live performance by musicians and sound #hackers! Read my recap here:

🍕🍅 From the garden to the pizza oven at TOG!
There was plenty of homemade pizza at last night’s TOG Open Social.
Even better, the tomato sauce was made using tomatoes grown in one of our members’ gardens — so we went from home-grown tomatoes, to homemade sauce, to pizzas cooked in the TOG pizza oven. 🔥Making comes in many forms, and some of them are particularly tasty.
Thanks to everyone who came along, cooked and shared the evening with us.

As mentioned in previous posts, our Munich Maker Lab logo often serves as a test for different production methods, from 3D printing to screen printing and embroidery, but this one was not on our bingo card: the Munich Maker Lab logo as a tufted rug.

No último final de semana, primeiro de agosto, realizamos no LHC o segundo encontro do Grande Colisor de Cabos: Dia da Infra 🛠️⚡
Continuando o que foi feito na primeira edição, agora trabalhando no planejamento e organização da infraestrutura de rede do hackerspace.
Nivelamos algumas ideias para o próximo CoffeeOps, além dos acessos dos participantes à nossa instância do Headscale, uma versão aberta e open-source do Tailscale.
Conectando e configurando também grupos e acessos em nosso Forgejo, uma plataforma para armazenar, organizar e colaborar em projetos de código-fonte. Uma alternativa livre ao GitHub.
Apresentamos algumas ferramentas que utilizamos para monitoramento de equipamentos.
Foram trabalhadas durante o encontro formas de conectar e usar acessos tanto via Tailscale nos homelabs pessoais quanto no Headscale para acessar recursos do hackerspace.
Criada alternativas para acessos às redes distintas. Claro, com um bom café e papo descontraído. Agradecemos aos participantes.
