I skimmed the document and everything I've read in the Pope's new encyclical on AI is a tour de force. One of the finest arguments for human dignity in the digital world. His arguments matches the arguments that #DigitalAutonomy and #FOSS advocates have made for decades. When he talks about subsidiarity in systems, this dovetails nicely with the arguments we make for how communities can control their own destiny through FOSS.
I believe we in the Digital Autonomy space have an opportunity to collaborate with Catholic institutions. This encyclical makes it clear there is a moral obligation for Catholics to consider deeply the technologies used and the systems for building and maintaining that technology.
As a queer nonbinary-ish person, I know personally this is not without risk. But I believe there's enough overlap here for it to be an opportunity for common good. If done correctly, it could even help make changes for the better for all participating groups.

Good article by my former colleague @Laurens Hof on how public communication platforms are working towards something that Matrix has been doing for a decade already.
Laurens Hof wrote:Bluesky is trying to solve “how should private data work on atproto.” Blacksky is trying to solve “what does the Black community on Bluesky need to grow and have a safe place. ” The Mastodon team is trying to solve “how do we add private messaging to ActivityPub.” Each ends up with bounded spaces, explicit membership, persistent state, and access decisions at the boundary. This is roughly the same shape as what Matrix has been building. Bascially, it seems to me that we’re doing carcinization for protocols.

Yesterday we had Kollicloud in our community call. The @LIT_Local_IT team showed how they are able to run cooperative clouds with accessible tooling for communities and organisations. They're building on top of the @coopcloud configuration commons, and added some wonderful magic to that.
Running your own cloud and practise #DigitalAutonomy has never been more affordable.
But what is it?
KolliCloud is a ready-to-use integrated hosting toolkit for clubs, NGOs, and collectives. Dutch secretary of state says that stopping to work with American tech companies on the short term is not possible.
This is nonsense. Also people have been trying to put digital independence on the agenda for years, without much success, unfortunately.

When I saw the first teasers on TV in late 1999, I shrugged it off as yet another sci-fi flick, a genre that never did much for me. Sure the special effects looked impressive, but that's not enough to make a film a good film.
Take Jurassic Park, for example. Or Avatar. Both featured fantastic special effects for their time, but both films were... well... disappointing.
But The Matrix was different. Besides spectacularly good special effects, it also tells a compelling story with a lot of philosophical depth. It's one of those rare films that you can watch many times and still discover new layers and connections every time.
One of the scenes in it is particularly relevant today, when we consider the iron grip that Big Tech has on the world. Some people are waking up, slowly, and realize they're being controlled by Big Tech, and need to break those chains.
But "millions of people, just living out their lives, oblivious", don't see it (yet), or even oppose a migration to the free world of Open Source and autonomy.
I've been trying to wake people up for decades, showing them "a world without rules and controls, without borders or boundaries, a world where anything is possible", but most people resist.
The Wachowskis brought us this scene in which Morpheus explains exactly this situation to Neo, when he shows him what The Matrix is:The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you're inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it.

It's chillingly relevant in these days of enshittification and the rise of AI, and at the same time paints a picture of successfully standing up against a system of gross manipulation, abuse and oppression.
Let us deal out red pills everywhere, and liberate more and more people. Show them a world where social media are actually social, where private communication is in fact private and where you are in control of your own life.

Today #EPFL made me a great present: making me understand that they don't give a SHIT about digital autonomy! So now:
- I uninstalled all MS software from my computer and smartphone:
- no mail on my phone anymore, as EPFL decided to block non-MS apps
- calendar barely working on my phone because of MS embrace, extend, extinguish
- I'll request to opt-out from WorkSpace One - why should I send all my data to the USA? -
Today #EPFL made me a great present: making me understand that they don't give a SHIT about digital autonomy! So now:

This Thursday we're having the Kollicloud.de in our Community Call. I'm curious to learn more about this amazing project, initiated by @LIT_Local_IT and in collaboration with the @coopcloud.
Curious to find out what communities and municipalities they support and work with, to bring #DigitalAutonomy and #TechSovereignty in the hands of organisations and their communities. What they offer and how they organise.
Of course change isn't at all easy, but if the #UX is much better and the costs are much lower, then it becomes easier to get the ball rolling.
