  1. Yes, I'm late to the party, I know. But right now, I feel like a king: I have created my first usable container image from scratch and published both the source and resulting image on my own Forgejo server 😎

From now on, I can install a complete OpenLDAP server with only one command. This is only version 0.0.1 and needs more work to be useful for others, but it's a foundation on which I can build. Next step is to create my own schema file, because why not. I have special needs, so to speak 😏

This LDAP server will be the source of truth for the Authentik server that follows, and the set of containers that will form a complete e-mail environment with all bells and whistles you can think of, and let's not forget Nextcloud, PowerDNS and Hubzilla.

It's almost time to say goodbye to my old server that has all software manually installed, and move to a modern setup where everything comes in its own container(s) and automatically plugs itself into Træfik, my reverse proxy.

    I'm a happy self-hoster 😎

  3. To stay connected and be visible in #student life we are (still) on #instagram.

But the longer we stay, the harder it becomes to defend that choice.
It clashes with what we stand for as a #library: trustworthy information, #OpenScience, #DigitalAutonomy & student wellbeing.

We want to explore alternatives and open up the conversation about what responsible (online) #communication with students could and should look like.

  4. Read this blog by @sourav666 on @itsfoss about the use of #Forgejo by the Dutch central #government:

    itsfoss.com/news/netherlands-f

"The platform is a self-hosted Forgejo instance, running on Dutch government infrastructure... It's free for all government organizations..."

"... this initiative is still in the pilot phase, with the rollout being kept deliberately gradual."

  5. In the context of our work at Better Tech Club a "normie" is a person for whom a computer is a mean to some other end. Meanwhile for us nerds, computers are very interesting on their own. This difference often leads to misunderstandings. But for a meaningful political change, all decent and intelligent people need to work together. It may not be immediately obvious, but many normies are in fact intelligent and decent. So let's try to understand each other better.

Solvinity, the company hosting DigiD will probably be taken over by Kyndryl, a US company. Putting the login functionality of the Dutch official digital services under US #jurisdiction.

  10. New blog post: Hello #DigitalAutonomy

I never really liked the term Digital Sovereignty for the way I have built my digital presence. Sovereignty is about nations. Big, bureaucratic, faceless organisations. It feels heavy. Burdensome. Static.

  11. Building communities of practice, bottom-up. The Open Source Way. To solve problems in those groups and share the lessons learned, help to adapt them for other groups in different situations, building a digital commons that can be used by anyone, everywhere. That's my way of thinking and #DigitalAutonomy expresses that in far better ways than #DigitalSovereignty ever could.

Is all for today :) Please share your thoughts and let's have a productive discussion!

  12. I never really liked the term Digital Sovereignty. Sovereignty is about nations. Big, bureaucratic, faceless organisations. It feels heavy. Burdensome. Static.

I want to express how I aim to be in control of my digital presence instead. Free to do things the way I want them to be. Sharing all of it. Helping others, based on agreed values and principles. And I think I have a better term for that, a term that feels much more natural

  20. It should come as no surprise that Beam is based on Matrix.

France and Germany have set a good example, France has TChap, Germany uses BwMessenger and TI-Messenger, all based on Matrix.

Let's hope all other a European countries and the EU itself will follow these examples, fast...

  21. Belgium is the next European country to take communication between public workers into its own hands. No more WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, it's Beam from now on.

*Beam has been developed by the state-backed company Belgian Secure Communications (BSC). It will eventually be used by around 750,000 public sector employees and military personnel.*

  25. Everyday people ask us where to start with their transition towards #digitalautonomy. And there is no easy answer, unfortunately. Well, the fundamental aspect with autonomy is that many people and communities are working it their way, addressing the specific needs of their community, and that is how it should be.

Lessons learnt by many of us on this field: co-create services that address those specific needs of the community, and build in democratic processes, through #commons governance and #cooperative membership where adequate, sharing knowledge internally and externally, connecting to other communities.

And there, I find my motivation: to connect the fragmented communities, coordinate efforts to build up better value propositions.

That is for me one of the key things to be contributing to the #DemocraticTechFund, to weave networks, to share transition strategies, to document what is missing, to put in motion campaigns to mobilise more people and resources to go together.

  26. Given the #DigitalCoup and the urgency to transition to #DigitalAutonomy, we’re building up the DemocraticTech.Fund. It is a networked approach, aiming to increase our collective capacity, to discover the tech that is already available to us, to deploy it in ways that we can own it, to share learnings of the transition, to move there together, so we can overcome network effects.

It is our intention to identify together the gaps of what is needed to make the transition, to fund that collectively. This can be tech, media to raise awareness for the positive alternatives already out there, and federating our communities. We’re starting as civil society, and we intent to invite institutions – public and private – to chip in and multiply the contributions. Together we can make the impact that is needed.

  32. In 1829, when Englishman Thomas Peel tried to establish an agricultural colony on Australia, something unexpected happened: his workers simply abandoned him en masse; a 19th century style Great Resignation. Despite Peel's large amount of capital brought over from England, these workers didn't need to subordinate themselves to Peel's capital, as they could just... move over to the next plot of land and continue to go into business for themselves. Peel's capital had no command, as labourers still had access to The Commons. The enclosing of The Commons was the necessary to shift the power from landowners to owners of capital, and for capitalism to bloom.

Similarly, today, frontier AI labs command no control, unless they enclose The Commons:
    - I have no reason to go to Claude or ChatGPT if I can readily find the information I need in an online encyclopaedia
    - I don't need to reach for Claude Code if collaborative QA platforms thrive (yes, I'm aware StackOverflow had it's share of issues even before AI)

Resisting AI today is the modern battle against enclosing our Digital Commons. I don't think that protections from scrapers are going to work, as they're most likely going to damage to discovery of content and knowledge.

It is in Dutch, but I'm pretty sure your browser can translate it for you:

It is a recommendation for a #GitForge for the Dutch #government.

    Part of the conclusion:
In summary, from the point of view of digital sovereignty and digital autonomy is a self-hosted Forgejo the best choice for the government.
