  7. If solutions don’t exist, you have to build them yourself. I don’t take any responsibility for this tool, I cobbled it together in a few hours.

  8. There doesn’t seem to be a straightforward solution to sync Navidrome favorites/ratings with ID3 metadata. I understand that Navidrome is strictly read-only, but it would still be great to have *a* solution to “bake” favorites into ID3 metadata instead of managing them solely through Navidrome.

  9. After a month of testing I can say that this player is the best I've ever found for self hosted servers such as navidrome and jellyfin (it also has plex but I have abandoned). On the site reports that there is also a linux desktop version but not yet tested. That will be my paradise for self hosted music 🥹

✅️ I am currently in my 20th year in education and over the years I've worked in both secondary and college. I've been a sysadmin longer, having started at the NM Coalition for Literacy in 2000 while finishing college on the "long plan." I pivoted in 2018 back to the private sector and then back again to education in 2022. I've maintained this side company/DBA, Haack's Networking, throughout the entirety and I still have clients to this day that I began with in the early 2000s.

✍️ I've always been struck by the prohibitive cost of software. As a young kid, I remember my father purchased me MetroWorks CodeWarrior for learning C for my LC475 68K mac. I read somewhere in 1992 that I should learn C so that's why I asked for it. Over those next few months, it's hard to explain the frustration I felt at trying to keep the abstractions separated. Open firmware, vs. mac's OS at that time, vs., the IDE and C I was supposed to be learning. It helped at disambiguating abstractions, but was useless at teaching me C. I still suck at C. The package was pretty costly nevertheless.

📻️ While in my early days as a sysadmin, I remember the Adobe suites, Microsoft suites, etc., that we were obligated to keep up to date and purchase for our non-profit. We also had tons of macs, 5 laser printers, early flat panel displays, an early NAS, and a hard firewall (Sonic something). It was not sustainable for this non-profit whatsoever. After the prior Director left - who I still consider a mentor and friend to this day - others took over who made an effort to reduce spending and keep the tech lifts in line with reality. It was slow and painful, but/and I learned that costly is not better.

💡 It turns out that costly is still not better. In the link above, I share floss-based services I freely host for the community. Registration is open; there are associated and differing TOS/COC. I welcome community members to come by and/or join. We have a nice Matrix community and a small but dedicated Masto #community - Costs should not prohibit end users from using compelling solutions. And, of course, those solutions should also respect user freedom. Consider signing up!

  15. TIL if you go through and manually update a bunch of genre tags for music which is in your #Jellyfin, the secret button to get it to pull those tags directly from the files is "Replace all metadata," not "Scan for new and updated files."

I assumed the latter would work because these files are updated, but maybe my Jellyfin is buggy, or maybe it's working as expected since the genre metadata had already been filled in by a remote server.

Either way, this has opened a new front in the one-person Jellyfin vs #Navidrome war in my house. Honestly, Navidrome is lightweight enough that I might still keep it just because, even if I go back to Jellyfin for a lot of my listening.

  16. @tylerb welcome to the #Navidrome club! I agree that tech savviness is needed, particularly in terms of accessing home servers remotely, which I achieved by creating a tunnel with frp. Thankfully there are less technical offerings including @[email protected].

    🎶 Hot Music Takes - #04

🎹 Growing up, I always considered Queen's 1980's phase (excluding The Game) to be sub-par and far underneath the epic releases as defined by me: Jazz, The Game (written in 1979), A Night At the Opera, Sheer Heart Attack ...

💡 In an effort to understand the stigma that Queen received for their Hot Space release, I embarked on a journey to revisit all of Queen post-1980's The Game. I've now made it through Hot Space and The Works and I'm currently working on It's a Kind of Magic ... which I was a young kid and contemporary with.

📜 Much to my surprise, I've just been dead wrong all along. I think my mother's bias (same age as Mercury) and my youngest Uncle's bias (senior in HS when Jazz was released) ... snuck into my psyche. My mother just took it for granted that the earlier stuff was superior ... my Uncle would talk all this anti-synth nonsense ... which, in hindsight, he was wrong - The Game is their first synth usage, which he seemed to miss.

‼️ Despite watching Live Aid with my mother/sister and my Dad loving Highlander and Queen's role in the supporting music ... I just blocked this period out as I grew up. What helped me understand my folly? Well, a mix of chance ... I was debating a colleague about the shittiness of Under Pressure and we locked heads on Hot Space vs. Let's Dance lmao. Secondly, I searched out and found live concerts for every single Queen album (up to Magic). After watching the shows, notably the later ones ... I realized that the later 1980s stuff suffered from production/marketing shyze ... if you want to understand the 1982 - 1986 phase ....

¿tienen algun reproductor de escritorio que funcione bien? los que probe andan a medias o no anda la conexion con subsonic?

  19. First scan of my music library with audiomuse-ai took a good few weeks but worth the wait.

I did not like the Spotify algorithm stuff at all but having a little in-house custom locally sourced algorithm running off a single board computer with nobs I can play with is fucking cool.

  20. Have enabled #LastFM scrobbling on my #Navidrome instance. Had no idea it could be glad I realised now and not a year into using it. 😀

  21. Finally getting to grips with #Picard (the #music library manager, not the captain… 🥲). Tried a few programs and Picard was the best, very pernickety but my mp3s are now in the best shape of their life, living it up on #Navidrome.

BUT. I’ve a fair few folders with 1-2 tracks only, where they’ve been badly matched at some point.

Music nerd Fedi: any quick tips, or am I looking at combing through em manually?

  25. Some #Homelab success today:

Finally finished a rough de-duping of my old music files, enough to justify setting up #Navidrome for streaming from my home server.

So I did! Even got it up and running on my phone and my wife's phone. Trying out #Amperfy on my wife's iOS and #Ultrasonic on my GrapheneOS.

    So far so smooth!

I wish there was a way for my wife to build her own library out of our super large library (that is mostly my files)... but we can probably find a work around for that later.

  28. Sitting in the shade, gazing out over the landscape, and listening to Willie Nelson thanks to #navidrome #tailscale and #amperfy feels like a positive experience of technology.

  29. @fuzzybitchy Thanks for the info, I'm trying out #Amperfy as we speak, looks more polished than what we installed on my wifes phone yesterday.
I'm already sold on #Navidrome and have already set it up with all my music.

  30. #Navidrome is working great, but I’m having syncing and performance issues with #Submariner. On iOS, #Amperfy works quite well. apps.apple.com/de/app/amperfy-

    #Navidrome #Koel #Tempo #Aonsoku #Musique

    #Aonsoku #Navidrome

  34. After a couple years of increasing frustration with #music streaming, I bit the bullet and set up a #selfhosted #Navidrome server with #Amperfy as my phone app.

When hitting shuffle, I’m *constantly* surprised at how random it is. It’s playing songs, artists, and albums that iTunes/Apple Music didn’t *touch* during years of use. It’s playing albums I literally forgot about, because Apple’s random streaming never played them.

  35. Pretty disappointed with the available #subsonic clients (#navidrome is the backend) for iOS out there.

Just seems like I can't get the "just right" experience out of #Amperfy (missing Chrome cast), play:Sub (chome cast support is flaky), or #substeamer (no Carplay support).

Of the options, #Amperfy is open source but I'm not familiar enough with the apple ecosystem to get it running in a newer XCode to try at adding carplay support.

Considering #syncthing and #VLC at this point.

    😿
