#PostmarketOS: #expressatt: converting expressatt to a generic device
i'm liking the idea of a generic device encapsulating all devices in an arch. there are now generic pkgs for x86_64 and ppc64le with aarch64 in the pipeline
decided to open a pr (but more like an rfc) for how to do the same for armv7
https://gitlab.postmarketos.org/postmarketOS/pmaports/-/merge_requests/9490
input welcome!
side note: there's also an idea to make an arch-agnostic generic device pkg. i think this is a great idea too

OnePlus 6T unbricked thanks to advice from @cas! 🎉
I've installed #PostmarketOS #Duranium on it because I think an image-based OS is a better fit for phone. Now I just need to figure out how to make Waydroid work because that doesn't seem to be straightforward on Duranium and there isn't a lot of documentation.

(I upgraded a few days ago (I have the Phosh edition), and for some reason, the welcome app appears for a few seconds, then a lock screen with the default wallpaper instead of the one I set, then when I unlock the phone, it looks like as if it crashes, the GUI disappears for a few seconds, then it comes back, unlocked successfully. It only does this after boot, if I lock the screen back, everything is normal, no crash, and the wallpaper is what I set. Not the end of the world for me, but it's a bit weird, might annoy some.)(more Linux and FOSS news in comments)

Both #Mobian and #PostmarketOS (#Alpine #Linux) repositories block updates over #Tor, but so does GrapheneOS. However, it is possible to have onionized repositories with #Debian on #Termux.
proot-distro with alpine can install (apk add) #rust and #cargo. Just add the required libraries and #Arti is built! PostmarketOS is built on Alpine and, interestingly, "apks" and "sdks" derive from Alpine, not from Google.
https://pkgs.alpinelinux.org/package/edge/main/x86/rustI wonder if microG can be installed in PostmarketOS. The Tor Browser should install on mobile linux devices (whether #Posh or #Gnome, etc). Until then, you can modify the proxy settings in #Firefox to use Arti. Onionsites could also be accessed this way.

Lilbits: Raspberry Pi hikes prices due to rising RAM costs, Netflix ends (most) Google Cast support, and MyArcade launches two Sonic the Hedgehog-themed game systems
With tech companies investing heavily in building out the infrastructure for AI systems that you may or may not have asked for, prices for certain PC components have shot through the roof as manufacturers struggle to keep up with demand. GPUs were the first casualty, and now RAM and SSDs are seeing major price hikes as well.

I'm not sure why I do it but I'm working on a slightly crazy project and a small part of that involves installing @postmarketOS on a Samsung A5 2017 (a5y17lte) which I got off eBay for £7 as it had a shattered screen.
Cue a rabbit hole for the last 4 days where I have wrestled the pmbootstrap, solved a bug which has stopped many downstream devices working recently, and then learnt all about adb sideloading and #twrp and #lineageos and finally today I have an installation of #postmarketos running connected over usbnet.
I don't know why I do it to myself... Now to write it up as don't want to have to relearn that all again
-
I just reinstalled #postmarketos edge with #posh on my #OnePlus6 (t) just to try the #camera. It's SO near to be useable, it hurts.
I have to open #gnome #camera and then #cameracrtl to display the focus controls, and then manually focus, as I do on my reflex camera.
The only issue is the image is displayed upside-down, so it's very hard to point it in the right direction.
The sad thing is I had it in the right orientation (but without focus controls, as I was using gnome-mobile) before formatting 🤦♂️
Anyone knows if/how it can be rotated?
(Note that, once the shutter is pressed, the resulting image is in the right orientation in the gallery 🤷♂️) -

The #librem11 is great so far, I've been giving #pureos a shot since it is #purism flagship distro -- there are things that I think need improvement -- like (a) some of the pureos apps are not as good as their #flatpak counterparts -- like for example flathub has #geany 2.0 while pureos is still 1.38 0 -- or (b) the native `gnome-calculator` app for some reason doesn't respect "Dark Theme" mode in #phosh -- same with #gedit -- the flatpak version needs to be installed by console (same with #epiphany).
I'm writing this from #tuba and i much prefer it to android #fediverse apps. #parabolic #xournal++ #gnome-maps #libreoffice #krita #gimp #discord #gimp #krita #mypaint all seem to be working just fine.
Having had no prior experience with #tablet sized devices with a keyboard, it wasn't obvious to me how the magnetic cover snaps to the back of the tablet in a λ kind of shape.
Contact sync with #nextcloud works as expected, and #geary email seems like a good fit for this size device, though I typically prefer #thunderbird -- I'm going to give that a try later.
#chatty seems clogged up when I try to login to my #matrix -- though I had a lot of rooms and person to person chats. I am thinking of installing the #flatpak version to see if that fixes it, but then that would seem odd to not use pureos version. It sometimes shows my rooms and contacts double in the left sidebar. Though I have been impressed when using my #librem5 and #postmarketos version of the app as I am new to it. It's a bit rough but seems to have come a long way.
Overall the device is pretty snappy, I have 6 apps open as I write this and it is doing just fine.
#cheese takes photos and videos just fine. I tried to get the #gnome "snapshot" "camera" app running but it doesn't automatically detect the cameras. I am not sure if this is because it is a flatpak or not. I enabled the permissions in #flatseal
I strongly recommend a wireless bluetooth mouse. I am using a inexpensive logitech m535 and it works great. Wifi, no complaints there.
I do think that the default apps in the pureos repos should either be updated or omitted as the default software source, suchas the #libreoffice package when intalled has a theme that makes it look like it's from the 1990s whereas the flatpak version is very nice.
I've been watching #linuxmobile over the last decade and I am presently surprised how far purism and the #linux and #foss people have come. Excellent work @ all. I think this is a great device to do development on as it runs much faster than my #pinephone and even my librem5. And it's not qemu, and the device seems easy enough to reflash -- one thing I especially like about the librem5 aswell when compared to other processes like fumbling through pmbootstrap to reflash #android to #lineageos
I am still trying to figure out what the best music app for this device is -- I do like #lollypopInternal sound quality isn't amazing, but I wouldn't call it bad either when comparing to some of the other small form factor devices with mobile speakers I've owned. It's fine as a fallback but you are better off with a bluetooth headset to complement it or a tiny portable bluetooth speaker.
Some options like "scale apps to fullscreen" are not easy to find so I had to set a few options in dconf-editor. I think there is a app called "Mobile Settings" that might have it. Not all apps have the dialogs constrained inside the screen dimensions like the Geany Open dialog for example (which is understandable as this app hasn't targeted mobile or tablet yet as far as I know.)
I use the device to watch online videos, for instant messaging via matrix via #element / #schildichat and it does just fine. I haven't tested it with #zoom or anything but from what I've seen I'm sure it'd do just fine.
Epiphany "Install Website as App" is a great feature -- I have several I've added to my App Menu, Epiphany has always had trouble though being on the lean side. I do wish that I had this option on #firefox ESR, in any case I've just switched to #librewolf again as I prefer it.
I am interesting in comparing phosh to #gnomemobile as I might want to use that instead someday. I have used #plasmamobile and it's hard to put into words in some ways I like it more than phosh, and in other ways I am just not used to the apps -- some apps are just better out of box like their notes app, I like that they have a flashlight button in their top menu. Their UX scaling and fluidity is really good. I am glad that everything is doing such a good job and friendly competition will drive each side to keep improving.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered this device on day 1, but I am glad I did. And as I don't have a laptop or like laptops or conventional smartphones very much for me this device is kindof a big deal that I can do basic #linux and #it things on the go along with communication and such without all the headache of android, ios or windows which is not a option for me as linux is just better.
If you think about the #privacy space -- the #libremboot #codeboot is pretty revolutionary to start to see these kinds of firmwares in all in one hardware. And of course this automatic disk encryption is a nice bonus though not something I need as a enthusiast unless maybe I want to travel with the device and protect my data.
People will have different criticisms, and opinions, and I may be easy-going but overall my opinion is that I am pleased with the utility the device offers and I think any rough edges will only get better in the software over time. I may switch the default distro eventually to do some more research and exploring in the linux mobile space -- but it's a little unclear who the big names are worth checking out. I did postmarketos for a while but I feel like the QA is a little all over the place and their package manager is a little difficult to use when I want to check the available software versions, and the phone space is such a mess to try to document and navigate if you are trying to use a previously android device.
I'm also interested in how the #starlabs #starlite5 will compare and contrast in the future. Having used this device I can't recommend something in this size without a keyboard and mouse for more complex usage, I didn't really undestand that the Librem11 keyboard is wired at first, but now that I have figured it out I prefer the simple tech vs overcomplication.
All in all, I think they have a winner, and I expect to get a lot of use out of this as a side rig to my main desktop. Would buy again, and excited to see all the software improvements coming downstream.
