  1. Question of the day.

    If I flash an older mobile ROM with something like PostmarketOS, am I also going to lose existing files in the storage system i.e. photos?

  3. I wish there was a crowdfunding campaign somewhere to get a reasonably modern phone up and running reliably with real Linux.

    I'm talking something with PostmarketOS / Mobian + Phosh/Plasma Mobile / Gnome Mobile and the basics made reliable:
    * wifi
    * mobile data
    * calls
    * suspend/wake
    * camera

    Maybe make Waydroid integration a stretch goal, but not a core requirement.

    I would gladly throw a bunch of money at something with the promise to get the basics to work reliably.

    Maybe the issue isn't money, but it sure seems like pooling funding for some of the highly talented people working in the space couldn't hurt.

    Anyone know of anything like this?

  5. So I'm a pretty big fan of my new phone so far. #FuriOS wouldn't be my first choice of Linux Mobile operating systems, but it's fine. I would prefer #PlasmaMobile to #Phosh, but Phosh is also fine ( I prefer a clean desktop to an always present app list; always present app lists render wallpaper pointless) .

    All that said… I miss my #Android keyboard. The predictive text was better, it auto-capitalized the start of sentences, it auto capitalized the word "i" and previously entered proper nouns, and while the autocorrect was sometimes annoying , it turns out that not having it is worse. For this Owlbear it is, at least.

    Also, it auto-spaces after punctuation, which The Owlbear is having trouble getting used to and seems like a really stupid feature for a keyboard intended to be used ( at least sometimes) in a terminal. Not auto-capitalizing letters makes sense for a terminal keyboard, but auto spacing after punctuation ( including parentheses ) doesn't.

    So the keeb isn't great for either.

  7. #oxygen on #plasmamobile is just so cool :))

    shame that the oxygen icon pack is not complete for new applications and other stuff, but its better than nothing.

  9. Hello everyone after a long time! Hope you're all doing great, I've missed this community :)

    My internet is finally back to a relatively stable state, which means I can jump back into my old passion projects!

    I recently saw that a native ARM64 beta port of the Steam client was released, and I knew it was the perfect time to test it on my Linux phone.

    I'm currently running #postmarketOS with #PlasmaMobile on my PocoPhone F1. Since pmOS is based on Alpine, it uses musl libc, which doesn't support running these binaries natively. To bypass this, I set up an Ubuntu 24.04 #Distrobox container and installed the ARM64 Steam client along with box64 and box86. The process wasn't as straightforward as some guides suggest (like the one below); I had to do some extra tweaking. I'll definitely write a detailed blog post or a postmarketOS wiki entry about it soon!

    I managed to boot Steam into Big Picture mode and went straight to setting up Proton.

    Note: The Proton 11 ARM64 mentioned in the link didn't work for me, so I used Proton Experimental instead.

    I paired my PS4 controller via Bluetooth, and it worked flawlessly out of the box! For the gaming test, I downloaded Crab Game (kept it lightweight due to my strict data limits).

    Against all odds, it actually launched! Running via Proton Experimental + Box64/86 inside Distrobox on my phone, I managed to get a relatively playable 20-30 FPS. Linux mobile gaming is getting wild! 🐧🎮

  11. Reading a bit on #PostmarketOS, #PlasmaMobile, #Halium etc.

    There are lots of pieces in that puzzle, and I'm not likely to spring for the PinePhone hardware. But PlasmaM may be a viable option for a side project – I could pick away at it to vent frustrations with Android. I even see one of my old phones mentioned - the MotoG6 on which some have had some porting success.

    (GrapheneOS sounds nice, but it's all Google Pixel hardware :frownyFace )

  13. Прошила OnePlus 6 на #postmarketOS с #PlasmaMobile, а значит, у меня будет чем заняться на выходных!

  15. Something happened today and now my #PlasmaMobile appears to be CPU-rendered 🫠

    Pretty cool slow-mode on the animations, but a little harder to use haha

  17. Kinda want to try #PlasmaMobile, but also don't really want to risk potentially bricking my phone and I don't want to buy a cheap inferior spec one to try it out on, since then I'd just have a more rubbish phone. 😞

  19. Since switching to #postmarketOS, one of the things I missed most from Android is this curious keyboard app "Unexpected Keyboard," which lets you access most symbols with a swipe. Importantly for Linux, it has Ctrl, Tab, Escape, and arrows!

    I found a repo called "Unfettered Keyboard" (by @flamingradian), which is a faithful port of the base features from my favorite keyboard! I switched to #PlasmaMobile a couple days back and am so thrilled to be able to use this keyboard on it!!

  21. This is a sprint and a parallel research project I'm doing with a focus on desktop UX in a convergence-oriented environment. Would you like to discuss this little fork of #kde #plasmamobile with some #QML, C++, and #UX wizards?😶😶 #linux #mobile

  22. Damn @plasmamobile is really good. Phosh still has more features which make it easier to use and plasma mobile is missing some features but workflow and UX wise plasma-mobile is already better.

  27. One problem solved. I have kana flick inputs again.

    #PlasmaMobile has two different spots to change the keyboard settings that overlap

    • On-Screen Keyboard (shows nothing on startup)
    • Keyboard -> On-Screen Keybaord

    The second has to be setup to explicitly add not only secondary but also your primary languages out of the box. Strangely,. the two different "On-Screen Keybaord" screens show some of the same but also different settings. The first item never shows the proper language configuration options.

  28. plasma mobile is legit the best mobile interface ive used so far, its _very_ close to being as usable as android. amazing job!

    I hadn't heard until Plasma Mobile until now, I had only heard of the pinephone one. I am excited to hear more about the project development in the future!
