  1. So here's some reflections a few weeks in after having replacing Ubuntu with GNOME OS as the sole OS on my daily driver laptop.

    1. OMG still feels great finally having a complete, up to date set of GNOME packages and a stock GNOME desktop, after decades of Canonical picking and choosing what and when to package - Calendar and Disks in particular. Even poor old Software seems to work well enough now.

GNOME OS remains by far the best desktop experience compared to Windows and MacOS, and having the whole thing together as intended is *chefkiss*.

    2. While I miss being able to do things like `dpkg [-L/-S]` to work out what packages own what files (mostly while trying to debug problems with the OS), in general the immutable system works amazingly well such that I don't even think about software updates anymore. It Just Works™.

  2. @wwarner
Believing the shop managers blaming delivery truck drivers, the supermarket's customers order chips delivered by a "Large Lorry Model" :psyduck:

Meanwhile, a group of anarcho-syndicalist farmers are building entire farmers' markets to replace the established supermarkets' management by Very Small Shell Scripts™ just to prove a point, filling immutable shelves with flat-packed goods and a JIT fast-moving inventory.

  3. I am totally melting this strix halo. I'm using this tool to run a memory system locally. I can even send the local model to do stuff as a subagent. And then someday, completely local.

That makes sense to me, this is just the AI version of "hybrid cloud". The other workload maxing the CPU cores is building #gnomeos and #bluefin dakota, which I do all locally via this setup - test NUC reboots.

Hey @kyle greg k-h was explaining his setup to me and now I am kind of motivated to see how people home lab this stuff out. I am going for the "locally driven testlab to make Project Bluiefin" because that would make a good talk lol.

  8. It's pretty cool how useable GNOMEOS is nowadays. Apart from the issue I had earlier when combining multiple NVMe drives, everything's been smooth sailing so far.

Will stick to Fedora at work, but the idea right now is to keep using this on my daily driver on my personal machine. (Last summer I tried it for a month)

  9. I just decided to give GNOMEOS another goal as daily driver on my main machine.

So far after a relatively fresh install, `updatectl` seems to be broken. Might be related to the fact that I added a second device to my btrfs lvm? (Not sure why, but that's the only major thing I changed after a fresh install)

Anybody familiar with this issue? Otherwise I'll just file a bug.

  10. At the recent boiling the ocean I've been bullied into installing #GNOMEOS on my laptop.

Let's see how it goes :)

    GNOME 50 looks dope.

  11. It's been a lot of fun using Gnome OS as my main and only OS for the last 9 months!

But I'm starting to miss being able to use my dedicated GPU – especially now that I've started working a bit with video. And unfortunately Gnome OS does not support the proprietary driver needed to use my Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050.

So I'm on the lookout for my next OS. Recommendations appreciated, if it runs Gnome and you know for sure it supports the GTX 1050!

  16. Issues I'm having with Gnome 50 that I think should be fixed before the beta is over and stable is released:

    - System Monitor crashes a lot: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-b
    - If I ever suspend the PC all options to log out disappears: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-b
    - When logging in after booting my laptop, with the lid closed and an external monitor connected, the whole system is unusable and I have to hold the physical power button to restart. gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-b

Tendría que probar GNOME OS en mi laptop 🤔

  18. Does anyone else have this issue in Gnome where searching for a file in the overview and pressing Enter no longer opens the file but only opens the folder containing the file?

I'm hoping this will be solved before Gnome 50 goes out of beta! But I can't find any bug report about it. So I wonder if it's something I've done wrong or if it's unique to Gnome OS only, or if there's an issue somewhere I just haven't found… or if I should report it?

  19. @Valentin do you daily drive #gnomeos? I’ve been curious since I learned of it, but the official docs say don’t.

  20. @erebion if you are adventurous enough you can install #GNOMEOS in OnePlus / pine phone / fairphone5

    Cool presentation, thanks for sharing!

EndlessOS is still the operating system I install for users new to Linux or new to computing in general. On my own computer, I use Fedora Silverblue. But with this move to a GnomeOS base in EndlessOS 7, I'm now contemplating moving myself to EndlessOS too! After 15 years with Fedora. Exciting stuff!

  27. Unfortunately GitLab does not add up your statistics for you, so all I can say is look at my heatmap! Can you see when I joined the Summer of GNOME OS challenge? :P

I hand counted 72 contribution days. How many contributions I don't know, but:

Oct 20 was my most productive day, with 14 contributions. The other three light blue days has exactly 10 each.

  28. Been working on bluefin's distroless branch, built on #gnomeos #gnome

It's G50 the customizations aren't working yet but the automation is in place, you can just check on it daily.

  29. Okay, so after making a big post about how I was looking for a new #Linux foreverhome and I was gonna stop #DistroHopping on my laptop and wanted something...

Look. Long story short, I put #GnomeOS Nightly on my laptop because who cares about production-stable?

I will say my new Browser Home (at least currently) is #Waterfox because it fit in my threat model, has a slightly tweaked interface that I feel fits in better on a Gnome desktop, and overall just seemed the way to go.

Still trying to figure out what to so with my Gaming PC (currently running Bazzite). #PikaOS maybe? #DraugerOS? Something #Arch based?

I dunno, but you can rest assured that The Owlbear will absolutely bore you with the details!

  30. I had installed GNOME OS on a separate drive a while back, but never got it set up to actually use (i.e. installing my apps, copying files over from my main drive, etc)

decided to do so today, so I'm gonna experiment with daily driving GNOME OS for a bit

tbh I don't expect I'll miss too much from Fedora, since I was already Flatpak-first for apps and mostly using containers in the CLI anyway

    #GNOMEOS #Linux

  31. Wow! 6 days ago I created an issue over at #Gnome, about fixing a tiny annoyance I had, where I couldn't choose to open certain links inside #libadwaita apps in any way except for in the default browser.

    gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/libadwa

The very same day the great @alice replied positively, and by the next day she already had three commits ready!

Today I checked in my #GnomeOS nightly, and whaddayaknow, it's already implemented! Yey!

So fun to actually have a real impact on the OS you use :)

  32. @razze If you have #gnomeos, can you please try adding the #flathub repo with the #floss subset using a #flatpakrepo file?

On fedora 42 with #gnomesoftware 48.3, it adds the entire unfiltered repo, while adding it on the command line works.

The point is to create an easy way for nontechies to add flathub-floss by just opening a flatpakrepo file in gnome software, without using the terminal.
