  1. KDE Plasma 6.7 Beta is now available!

The beta version of KDE Plasma v6.7 is now available for developers and curious users to try out. This allows users to get an early look at the upcoming version of KDE Plasma, which brings new features and improvements to existing features.

The official announcement states that the beta version of KDE Plasma 6.7 includes two new modules:

    • plasma-bigscreen
    • union

This version of KDE Plasma uses the new styling engine that is currently under development, Union. This year’s update for Union states that the default input format has been changed from SVG to CSS stylesheets, considering that creating and editing styles were easier with SVG in the first glance until complexities appeared.

This is a promising change that will be integrated with the final release of KDE Plasma 6.7 to ensure that the design of UI elements, such as buttons, combo boxes, and checkboxes, look cleaner and more consistent than before. In this beta version of KDE Plasma, the Union styling is in technical preview.

Alongside the Union theming style is the Plasma Bigscreen, which is made by KDE, and is an open-source TV interface for Linux. This launcher provides you with a TV-friendly interface, which allows you to use it comfortably on your television. It also supports multiple input methods, such as your keyboard and mouse, your TV controller, and your phone.

Not only that, but Plasma Bigscreen allows you to customize it to make your TV truly yours. You’ll be able to customize your system and install your favorite applications in your heart’s content.

Other changes that are introduced with KDE Plasma 6.7 can be seen here.

  8. Updated ‘ktown’ packages, and a heads-up

Time for a KDE Plasma6 package refresh. On KDE's announcement page, the releases of KDE Gear 26.04.1 and Frameworks 6.26.0 were announced yesterday and today. Since OS packagers have early access to the source tarballs, I had everything compiled and ready for days and could simply push everything into my 'ktown' repository today.

  9. KDE 6_26.04 for Slackware-current (almost free of Qt5)

To be honest, I was waiting for a move from Pat. But I got restless, Pat is otherwise occupied for a few days so I took the plunge. What I am talking about is of course packaging KDE Gear 26.04.0 for Slackware. The latest release of Applications and KDEPIM is nicknamed the "KDE at 30" edition because KDE is around for 30 years already (!).

  29. KDE Plasma 6.6 is now officially live!

The KDE Plasma 6.6 desktop environment is now officially available to the public! You can now try out this version of the desktop environment to get awesome new features, as well as performance improvements and stability enhancements.

According to the KDE Plasma team, this version is like a “visual guide to the best desktop in the known universe,” because it makes your life easier without sacrificing flexibility by adding usability and accessibility features and improvements.

The top three features introduced in this version of KDE Plasma are:

    • Improved on-screen keyboard: The on-screen keyboard has been renewed and enhanced to make it more useful on touch-screen devices, such as tablets.
    • Spectacle Text Recognition: You can now extract text from the screenshots using the OCR technique that scans text in the screenshots and converts it to plain text.
    • Plasma Setup: When an operating system is installed, the Plasma Setup wizard appears, and it lets you configure your user account, your keyboard layout, and much more.

Additionally, it introduces brand new features to make your desktop easier to use, especially when it comes to users that need accessibility features, such as color filtering (for color blindness) and strict centered mode for the magnifier.

  30. KDE Plasma 6.6 gets another set of bug fixes before the final release

As KDE Plasma 6.6 gets closer to the final release, which was expected to be released on February 17th, this KDE Plasma version gets a ton of bug fixes, including some of the visual appearance that got improved this week.

KDE Plasma 6.6 now no longer shows hardware pages that are unavailable on your computer. For example, if the Thunderbolt and touch screen features are not available, you’ll no longer see their section in Settings. Below compares the System Settings page before and after the change.

    BeforeAfter

This reduces clutter caused by settings sections that are inaccessible on your computer to make it easier to navigate. This makes your experience better than before, as it only shows what’s available on your computer.

Alongside this change, the KDE Plasma team have done some of the most intriguing bug fixes that were done before the final release:

    • Fixed multiple significant issues on the lock screen that could be encountered with fingerprint authentication enabled: one that could break fingerprint unlocking, and another that could leave you with an “Unlock” button that did nothing when clicked. (David Edmundson, KDE Bugzilla #506567 and KDE Bugzilla #484363)
    • Fixed a Plasma crash caused by applying a global theme that includes a malformed layout script. (Marco Martin, KDE Bugzilla #515385)
    • Panel tooltips no longer inappropriately respect certain window placement policies on Wayland. (Tobias Fella, KDE Bugzilla #514820)
    • User-created global shortcuts are now always categorized as “Applications”, resolving an issue whereby apps added by choosing an executable using the file picker dialog would be inappropriately categorized as system services and couldn’t be edited or deleted. (Tobias Fella, KDE Bugzilla #513565)
    • Fixed two issues with recent files and folders in the Kickoff application launcher: now it shows the correct file type icons for items, and no longer sometimes shows a weird duplicate “files” section. (Christoph Wolk, KDE Bugzilla #496179 and KDE Bugzilla #501903)
    • Spectacle now shows the correct resolution in its tooltip for rectangular region screenshots when using a fractional scale factor on a single screen. (Noah Davis, KDE Bugzilla #488034)
    • The “Open With” dialog now filters its view properly when opened from a Flatpak app. (David Redondo, KDE Bugzilla #506513)
    • Keyboard focus no longer gets stuck in the Search widget after its search results appear. (Christoph Wolk, KDE Bugzilla #506505)

On February 17th, KDE Plasma 6.6 will be officially released for everyone to try out!

  31. KDE Plasma 6.7 tidies up the Emoji Selector!

This week, the KDE team have done some more impressive changes that will transform the way you use your Linux computer when KDE Plasma 6.7 gets released. Their latest article stated that, along with some interesting changes made to Plasma 6.7, the final release of 6.6 is already very close!

The KDE team have tidied up the Emoji Selector window so that the emoji variants are now shown in a nice little pop-up dialog box instead of being spread in the main selector window. You can now more easily select an emoji without having to scroll through all variants.

In the comparison picture above, the left side shows you the pop-up box that you’ll be presented with when you attempt to insert an emoji that contains tones. On the right side, the emoji selector window shows you all tones for one emoji in Plasma 6.6, making it harder for you to find a desired emoji.

Alongside that, KDE Plasma 6.7 also allows you to set a global keyboard shortcut to remove all recent notifications by just a single keystroke combo. This saves time, because it makes clearing all notifications effortless without having to open the notification list. Many UI improvements were also made to make your experienced more streamlined.

  32. KDE Plasma gets a truckload of bug fixes this week

When it comes to KDE Plasma 6.6 updates that happened this week, the KDE team have fixed a big collection of bugs this week that spanned around 28% of all opened bugs across all supoorted versions. This is a very important step to ensure that KDE Plasma 6.6 gets released at the highest quality and with the least amount of bugs as possible when it releases this February.

This week, the following improvements were made in Plasma 6.6:

    1. Desktop switching and Present Windows shortcuts now use the Meta key by default for more consistent system-wide behavior. (Antti Savolainen, kwin MR #8597)
    2. Plasma can now report printers’ waste receptacle levels and notify users when they fill up. (Mike Noe, KDE Bugzilla #514525)
    3. KRunner’s buttons have been reorganized to be consistent with other Plasma widgets, making the interface feel more familiar and coherent. (Taras Oleksyn, plasma-workspace MR #6203)
    4. Plasma’s system monitoring infrastructure received further fixes to improve OpenBSD support. (Rafael Sadowski, libksysguard MR #454)

This week, the following bugs were fixed in Plasma 6.6:

    1. Fixed a surprisingly common issue whereby KWin could sometimes crash when you frantically wiggled the pointer to try to stop a monitor from going to sleep. (Vlad Zahorodnii, KDE Bugzilla #487660)
    2. Fixed a case where KWin could crash when you deleted a virtual desktop that still had windows on it. (Vlad Zahorodnii, kwin MR #8680)
    3. Fixed another KWin crash, this one more random. (Xaver Hugl, kwin MR #8677)
    4. Fixed a long-standing issue whereby tooltips opened by buttons in Plasma widget popups could move onto the panel and get stuck there after you closed the widget popups. (Marco Martin, KDE Bugzilla #475646)
    5. Fixed an issue that made popups of panel widgets undesirably change their size when you moved their panel to an adjacent screen edge. (Christoph Wolk, KDE Bugzilla #512273)
    6. Fixed an issue making certain sub-menus of Plasma widgets not have transparent backgrounds, which was especially visible with menu blurring turned on. (Marco Martin, KDE Bugzilla #513307)
    7. Fixed an issue in the HDR calibrator tool that made long pieces of text overflow from their boxes. (Nate Graham and David Edmundson, KDE Bugzilla #514687)
    8. Fixed an issue that made Plasma forget the IPSec certificate passwords of L2TP VPNs. (Mickaël Thomas, plasma-nm MR #460)
    9. Fixed an issue causing apps launched using D-Bus activation to be omitted from System Monitor’s Applications table. (Arjen Hiemstra, KDE Bugzilla #510235)
    10. Fixed an issue in System Monitor that could make the Applications table’s “Details” panel un-scrollable under certain circumstances. (Arjen Hiemstra, KDE Bugzilla #506150)
    11. Fixed an issue in Discover that could sometimes make Flatpak apps’ languages packages fail to get grouped with the apps. (Harald Sitter, KDE Bugzilla #513111)

Additionally, Plasma 6.5.6 has seen the following fixes:

    1. Fixed an issue that could sometimes make KWin crash after periods of idleness. (Vlad Zahorodnii, KDE Bugzilla #513687)
    2. Fixed an issue that would make Plasma crash when you disabled widgets in the System Tray and clicked the dialog window’s “OK” button rather than the “Apply” button. (David Edmundson, KDE Bugzilla #478625)
    3. Fixed an issue that could sometimes make KWin crash after repeatedly pressing the “Activate window demanding attention” shortcut (Meta+Ctrl+A by default) while multiple windows were demanding attention. (Vlad Zahorodnii, KDE Bugzilla #500748)
    4. Fixed a common case where Plasma could crash after certain games crashed first. (David Edmundson, KDE Bugzilla #506562)
    5. Fixed a common case where Plasma could crash when configured with a weather station from the Environment Canada source in its Weather Report widget. (Bohdan Onofriichuk, KDE Bugzilla #514553)
    6. Fixed a case where changing the visibility of the Media Player widget in the System Tray while music was playing could make Plasma crash. (David Edmundson, KDE Bugzilla #514823)
    7. Spectacle once again remembers the location where you last saved a screenshot the next time you save one. (Noah Davis, KDE Bugzilla #511649)
    8. Fixed an issue causing 24” 16:9 aspect ratio monitors to get the wrong default resolution. (Anton Golubev, kwin MR #8681)

  33. KDE restores the documentation site for KDE apps

KDE has just published a blog article that stated that the documentation site, which can be accessed from docs.kde.org, had an issue where the documentation generation was not working. Now, they stated that they have finished fixing the documentation generation, and the site is now working properly as of today, with almost 150 applications having their own dedicated entry for documentation, such as Amarok, Dolphin, K3b, Kate, and Okular.

The blog article stated that there were major issues with their workflow where the documentation generation and publication were done on a dedicated machine with a monolithic process. Also, since QT 6 was released, it wasn’t possible to update the process properly due to the old workflow.

The new workflow was developed to solve all the problems with the previous workflow for documentation generation, where each application generated their own documentation using Xapian. The website generation process involved fetching the generated documentation for each application and building the website, and making local documentation generation easier. Also, the Docker image, suse-qt610, was selected to support documentation generation in this Docker image with support for QT 6.10.

However, the KDE team is not done figuring out solutions to the KDE documentation generation workflow problems, such as support for non-ASCII languages, such as Arabic and CJK languages, which is considered important for internationalization. Also, the deprecated documentation is being worked on to make sure that they reflect the current status as deprecated, while several hardcoded paths to QT 6 and KDE Frameworks 6 are being dropped when QT 7 and KDE Frameworks 7, which KDE Plasma 7 will use, releases.

You can now see the KDE documentation website in its current state here:

Plasma 6.7 is currently in development, with Plasma 6.6 having closed its doors on new features, as this blog article stated. Now, new features have emerged to Plasma 6.7, and one of those features let’s you switch dark mode on and off easily.

There is a new settings toggle that was recently added to the Brightness and Color settings in the settings panel on your taskbar. You can now enable and disable dark mode without having to open the full system settings by clicking on a switch toggle.

This saves time, as you don’t have to open the full settings application every time you want to switch between light and dark modes on your desktop. For example, if you turned Dark Mode on, the theme changes to Breeze Dark, and if you turned it off, the theme changes to Breeze. By default, the light theme is used as a default.

KDE Plasma 6.7 also gives you an option to assign a specific key to push to talk. This means that all microphones are muted until you press a key and hold it down, into which all microphones are unmuted. This means that you don’t have to mute your microphone by yourself once you finish talking; you just release the key.

  35. Plasma 6.6 lets you configure scheduling priorities

As Plasma 6.6 goes into bug fixing stage before the final release, this week, the KDE Plasma team has added a new feature to the System Monitor that restores a feature related to processor and input/output process priority management that existed in the older KSysGuard program. This allows you to set priorities for a process in both contexts.

When you open the “Set Priority” window for a specific process, the following CPU scheduling options are available:

    • Normal: The standard time-sharing scheduler for processes without special requirements.
    • Batch: Process is mildly disfavored in scheduling decisions, for CPU-intensive non-interactive processes.
    • Round-robin: Process will run whenever runnable, with timeslicing.
    • FIFO: Process will run whenever runnable, with no timeslicing.

However, for I/O scheduling settings, the following options can be provided to a process:

    • Normal: Process’ priority is based on the CPU priority.
    • Idle: Process can only use the hard disk when no other process has used it very recently.
    • Best Effort: Process is given higher priority to access the hard disk than normal.
    • Real Time: Process gets immediate access to the hard disk whenever needed, regardless of what else is going on.

The priority slider can be adjusted from 1 to 40 for the CPU priority, while the I/O priority slider can be adjusted from 0 to 7. The lowest value means the process is getting the least priority, and the highest value means the process is getting the most priority. This uses a new API that was introduced to libksysguard.

KDE Plasma 6.6 also brings an improvement that allows you to manually check the file system for errors while eliminating the automated check when you mount a drive. Search bar has also been added to the screen choser dialog, and many other improvements were made.

  36. KDE Plasma 6.6 fixes a screensaver bug for gamers

The screensaver bug that manifested when gamers play a game using their controller on their PC has been fixed for the upcoming release of KDE Plasma 6.6. Gamers who are experiencing this bug can now have a comfortable gaming experience after upgrading to KDE Plasma 6.6.

The blog article of This Week in Plasma states that the KDE desktop team has fixed an issue where the screensaver or screen locking mechanism would start during the gaming session using the controller as an input device instead of a mouse and a keyboard. This enhances experience for gamers who prefer to use controllers by considering every input event from the gaming controller as an activity.

A 13-year old bug report was made against KDE 4.x. Since then, the problem has spread from KDE 4.x to KDE Plasma 5.x and 6.x desktop environments across different versions of Linux distributions, disrupting the gamers’ experience for 13 consecutive years, with workarounds being posted.

Starting from KDE Plasma 6.6, which will be released on February 17th, gamers will be able to use their gamepads without worrying about their screen turning off during their gaming session.
