I am hearing the word #fdroid so many times and in literally so many booths here at #froscon2026. So glad that we are able to make a positive difference.
Even in #alternative #os booths people ask is #fdroid installable? Is it preinstalled and all. It is via #WayDroid of course.

Personally, I do not use any Android apps on the #Librem5. However, you could run certain Android apps with #Waydroid, which is available in the #PureOS repository:

For calls and messages the Librem 5 is reliable for me, and they wake the phone up, also from suspend.

I wish there was a crowdfunding campaign somewhere to get a reasonably modern phone up and running reliably with real Linux.

I'm talking something with PostmarketOS / Mobian + Phosh/Plasma Mobile / Gnome Mobile and the basics made reliable:
* wifi
* mobile data
* calls
* suspend/wake
* camera

Maybe make Waydroid integration a stretch goal, but not a core requirement.

I would gladly throw a bunch of money at something with the promise to get the basics to work reliably.

Maybe the issue isn't money, but it sure seems like pooling funding for some of the highly talented people working in the space couldn't hurt.

Anyone know of anything like this?

Just checked into my flight via the Android app for the airline (they don't accept paper tickets anymore). Very happy to be able to rely on #Waydroid to provide a functional environment to run this app, while using other great Linux apps like KDE Itinerary to manage the rest of the journey.

Habe gestern etwas mit #waydroid herumgespielt. Ich hatte den Container ohne Google Apps aufgesetzt, es stellte sich heraus, dass die App, die ich brauche, diese aber voraussetzt.
Heute morgen also alles wieder gelöscht und dabei vergessen, dass ich in den Download-Ordner der Waydroid-Sesion meinen Host-Download-Ordner gemountet hatte. Tja, der ist jetzt auch gelöscht.

@lil5 Although I highly appreciate the #Waydroid work, my preference is native Linux apps, or PWA's.

I think that emulators will always lag behind. I'm not looking for emulating a platform that I want to evade on my free devices.

@brettm @sashin you do need to try out those apps on #Waydroid first. They don't all work without google junk. If you do take the plunge, I'll be listening for your story.

So apparently my banking app will soon require an "Unrooted Android 10+ device". And because cameras don't seem to work out of the box in #WayDroid (Which appears to the app as unrooted somehow) I can't migrate over to it (I have to scan a QR code to migrate, there is no other option).

Currently trying to find ANY way to get a camera in Waydroid and considering switching banks if that fails.

Thanks to Seyed Mohamad Amin Modaresi, Waydroid is now in Debian! Because I've had their repository configured before, I ran into [0]. But the fix, `dpkg -r`ing both libgbinder and libglibutil, was easy enough.

Apparantly you can use #Waydroid for that. But personally, I do not use Waydroid, so I have no experience with that.

Also camera getting to work in Waydroid seems difficult.

You can use Waydroid on Linux, whether it is a Linux desktop, laptop or phone.

Today I found that i can run full android on linux using Waydroid.

Waydroid is container based layer and there is no translation layer so its so fast compared to the emulators.

Requries wayland supported desktop environment to run smoothly.

You can run any android app inside your pc using waydroid (aurora store: shown in the image)

It uses LineageOS as default so no google bloats.
