  1. #Today #3Things

    1. Wife attended a party last night which ran very late due to a power cut. So I was up until 1.30am (I can't sleep in these situations) and am now shattered. She could have ducked out early but felt obligated to stay. Guess what I think about social obligations.

    2. In addition to being shattered I think I have a bug (or ate some bad food). Stomach unsettled and crampy, feeling hot and cold, not at my best. Today is day 3 of this. Rest needed.

    3. Continuing to tweak my fresh #Pop_OS installation on my #Thinkpad - all going well. #COSMIC isn't quite as flexible as #Plasma (my previous DE) but it's already more polished and consistent which is quite a feat for such a young distro.

  6. #Tech post! #Today I finally found time to remove #Fedora from my #Linux laptop. I had intended to replace it with #MXLinux - in fact for a couple of hours I did - but in the end I had so many problems customising #KDE #Plasma that I actually stopped and had a rethink.

I had always liked Plasma for its customisability, but wrestling with panel configuration seems to be getting harder - or I'm getting older - and I just couldn't get the desktop how I wanted it. After 2 hours I realised life was too short for such nonsense.

I needed a polished distro with fractional scaling on #HiDPI displays, and after some research to get me up to date, I plumped for #Pop_OS with its #COSMIC desktop.

Pop_OS is great - it has a solid #Ubuntu base and the UI feels far more consistent and robust than either KDE or #Gnome - but my essential #Java app, the #JMRI #ModelRailway control software, looked awful at any scale. Jagged fonts, boxes overflowing, etc.

After a lot of searching I found a shell command to force font anti-aliasing for old Java apps (comment if you need a link to the Gist), and with a few more tweaks finally all was well.

Pop_OS, like MX Linux, seems to be AI-neutral rather than overtly AI-positive like Fedora, so I've achieved my original goal, even if it took me in an unexpected direction.

  11. CW: Adventures in Linux

Next step in my #linux journey - taking a dsktop battlestation with power and juice and putting linux on there and seeing if I can make it my primary compute system. I want to try somethign other than #cachyOS (which I enjoy). #Bazzite has not worked for me at all on many attempts. #pop_os kept having the loss of network need to reboot issues. #nobara has been problematic getting stuck in a loop from the latest updater (major version 43) trying to update to 44 and not getting there.

I could go #linuxmint or #ubuntu, but I like the arch underneath Cachy, and i need to look at other good #archlinux versions for running games - via #steam #heroicgameslauncher and #minigalaxy for #gog .

And I need to get the blog up to write about my experiences in proper longform.

    Meme for reading.

  26. #linux #linuxgaming project update
My mother is beginning testing a #linuxmint laptop as her daily driver while taking notes about issues. It's been 4 days and I haven't received a call about any issues.

I finally killed the dragon and got windows off the new gaming lappy and got #pop_os installed successfully and relatively smoothly. HAving to access the bios form within Windows via recovery because the BIOS was locked out from boot (F12 failed to work) to turn off Secure UEFI was the biggest fight.

Getting the apps set up so far has been smooth. I need to do a little more with some technical side apps for video capture and editing on there.

I need to check in with my buddy rocking the #cachyOS box used for lighter gaming (stock business desktop graphics from 3 years ago) and internet browsing and see how that's going.

    There is good forward progress.

  31. Forget #bazzite
I can load up any other gaming Linux. This won’t run. I picked the appropriate hardware config. And it won’t run. Two different usb sticks, it won’t even be read. #ubuntu #linuxmint #pop_os #NobaraLinux just work. But not Bazzite. Not on a recycled computer. Not on a brand new gaming laptop.

Lesson learned. Which gaming Linux distro should I put on a warp drive gaming lappy?
