Great success! I've returned my instance back to local storage, all in aid of reducing costs in other cloud platforms.
I had set up nginx to cache my S3 media in SSD cache space, so now I need to modify that config to do the same for my media living on high-capacity spinning rust.
I know that as a small instance this isnt really needed, but who knows, maybe I'll have a sudden influx of new users and will be glad of having it set up! -
tootctl media remove --days=7
ETA: 41:56:22Ah. This'll take longer than just a single coffee break. Ah well. See you all on the other side of a great media purge!
After that, it's syncing my B2 bucket back to my local disk!

@boracle I’m still on Windows 10, but I’ll be switching to Debian soon.
I recently switched to Kopia because it’s cross-platform, and I’m backing up to B2 Backblaze, which costs $6 USD per TB per month.
So, backing up 0.5 TB means I only pay $3 per month.
Kopia offers fine-grained control over what and when you back up, and you can access your backup repository from anywhere.

❗ PSA: If you're using #BackblazeB2 cli for your backups ❗
In v3.18.0 (not even a major!) they switched all the camelCase flags to kebab-case. This means any command that still includes the camelCase flags will just fail with "unrecognized arguments".
So one of my servers has not been making backups since Mai of 2024. Fun! Glad I caught that before worse happened.

Ouch, I just went over my #BackblazeB2 Class B transaction cap…

Any #Synology fans out there? If so, I have a question for you all, I currently use Microsoft #OneDrive for #CloudSync in mine, I have less than 1 TB of data, it seems like cost is the same than #BackblazeB2 and #SynologyC2 but I get access to the rest of the office apps that I occasionally need. Am I missing something here?

Some time ago, I created a GitHub repo showing how to upload files from JS in the browser using the #BackblazeB2 Native API. I just updated the repo to show the same using S3 presigned URLs, with an explanation of the differences between the two: https://github.com/backblaze-b2-samples/b2-browser-upload

Backblaze B2 Live Read is now in private preview. Read the full announcement to see how it gives media production teams the ability to access, edit, and transform content—while it's still being uploaded into #BackblazeB2 Cloud Storage. 🔥➡️ https://www.backblaze.com/blog/announcing-b2-live-read/?utm_campaign=Blog&utm_content=live-read&utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon

🤓🚨 16-hours after I reported the #BackBlaze US East outage/disruptions after thousands of S3 errors in SideKiq, Backblaze confirms there are ongoing issues. #MastoAdmin #BackblazeB2
Their status page is https://status.backblaze.com/
Current status for US East is, "Users may be encountering intermittent failures on uploads and downloads."
Not sure why he said EU Central...

I performed a MTR (Matt's (MY) Traceroute) on my Mastodon S3 storage ( s3.us-east-005.backblazeb2.com) , which is #BackBlaze #BackblazeB2
I used their ingress point for the test. ca005.backblaze.com resolves directly to their ingress points rather than the s3 url.
Any thoughts, #MastoAdmin #Network #IT on performance, etc. Any comments welcome. I am in a help ticket with one of their Technical Support Engineers.
I'm getting several 443 errors in my Sidekiq jobs, as well as other issues

I’ll be co-presenting a webinar at 10am Pacific Time tomorrow with Ameya Pathare, CTO of Amplify (https://www.amplifydata.io/), looking at how they built their data distribution platform around #SnowflakeDB, and why they migrated their outbound file storage from Amazon S3 to #BackblazeB2.
If you can’t join us, register anyway, and we’ll send you a link to the recording.

Is #BackblazeB2 #backblaze having issues, or did I break something in my upgrade? #mastoadmin
Currently failing to load external media. Hm.

@brianleroux @macdonst Ah - my apologies! I got your “p99 problems” card, but I didn’t get your name. I grabbed aws-lite; I’m gonna see if I can point it at #BackblazeB2. Watch this space!

@mspsadmin Awesome! You’re most welcome - thanks for being a #BackblazeB2 customer 👍🏻

A question for all the other #mastoadmin folks out there: how often are you running cleanup jobs, and what specific tasks are you running? Now that I've moved everything to #BackblazeB2 I'm pretty sure I don't need to run them nightly anymore, but I wanted to know what the best practice is (beyond the two tasks the docs recommend to run weekly).
-
@mudkip Run some tests with B2 as main storage and see how the latency is. It might work out ok, depending on your cache hit ratio. Also, you can create a second #BackblazeB2 account in a different region (US East?) and use cloud replication to backup main storage.
-
@vwbusguy @hmiron Technically, it’s #BackblazeB2, which has an S3-compatible API 🤓

I have had #BackblazeB2 storage and #nextcloud for years now. This past week, I was able to set up external storage on my NextCloud instance by adding some BackBlazeB2 buckets to each user on my NextCloud. Who needs #google or #apple native cloud storage, when you can host your own for cheaper?!
Thank you @nextcloud for providing a superior and high-utility FOSS product that keeps getting better and better.

Backblaze B2 to Cloudflare Using Page Rules
Two companies I really like are Backblaze and Cloudflare. I have trusted Backblaze for years with my personal computer backup and I have been a long time customer of Cloudflare since 2011 at least. Both companies are part of the bandwidth alliance, meaning you don't have to worry about bandwidth fees when you are transferring data bet

Recap on Mastodon instance storage:
- ZFS 5400rpm HDD: too slow with hundreds of thousands small files
- Storj: too expensive in the long run because of the segment fee($0.0000088)
- IDrive e2: timeouts on media upload 20% of time (over 1 minute object put time in some cases)
- Backblaze B2: works well and I will probably settle on it#mastodon #storj #BackblazeB2 #backblaze #s3 #idrive #idrivee2 #zfs

I spend much of my time emphasizing that #BackblazeB2 is API-compatible with Amazon S3 but, ironically, there are some compelling reasons you should look at the B2 Native CLI rather than use the AWS equivalent: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/go-wild-with-wildcards-in-backblaze-b2-command-line-tool-3-7-1/

Catch-up, so after all it's a simple #port issue. While they do some #regression test, they changed the port number to 80. I believe 80 is the actual port they'd like of us to use.

#mastoadmin sadly #backblaze b2 is banned in my country (most possibly for the stupidest reason the whole api domain got banned), so I'm looking for alternatives for #mastodon storage solution.
I've heard about #idriveE2 from #idrive . Has anyone used it, along with #cloudflare or similar CDN? How was your experience with #idrive #e2 ?
Or has anyone been using other storage solutions apart from #aws #s3 and #backblazeb2 ? E.g. #wasabi ?
