#mastoadmins - I've just seen a shedload of "trending" hashtags - 184 in the last hour!
Quite a few seem to be from mastodon.hongkongers.net, but mirroring canadian news sites.
Anyone know what's going on?
I'm tempted to block the instance.

Upgraded the Mastodon backend postgresql server from 14 to 18 with pgautoupgrade. Found out that I had some uniqueness violations (possibly due to collation changes) that needed some manual DB operations to merge accounts and remove duplicate entries before I could run `tootctl maintenance fix-duplicates`. Then used pg_repack to remove bloat and finally used `REINDEX` to fix the last bits.

Everything's fresh and smooth again!

Just a reminder that if you're an admin or a moderator, it should be your responsibility to step in when someone is harassing a member of your community and claiming to be enforcing rules that don't apply to them.

#MastoAdmins: has anyone had a problem with all quoted posts saying "Post pending", but when I open the post on the original server, the quoted post displays fine? I'm on v4.6.0, but it's been doing it for several versions, but it used to work.

Reloading the page on my server doesn't help either.

Sometimes, if I favourite or boost the post on my server, the "post pending" quote then displays immediately.

I've checked my Sidekiq queues and all sizes are "0".

I did have a problem before when the "more replies" function was implemented, and I had to separate the pull queue into a new service (because the pull queue kept building up overnight) , but that is stable now.

Is there any way to limit the size of files you receive from other instances?

My #Mastodon server often receives huge files -- 100s of MBs in size (videos). I'd rather block them. My Media Usage can get out of hand very quickly.

I can see anything in the docs.

I also run a #GoToSocial instance, and I can limit what I receive. It just means the user has to click a link to open the file on the remote instance. Seems a great solution.

Ideally, all the extra information would be included in the server metadata, but until then, maybe server admins interested in using this project can reach out and I can add it manually?

Addendum: Another possible outcome of this prototype could be opening an FEP to include additional details inside nodeinfo, such as links to annual reports, membership price, etc.

Does this already exist? Would anyone be interested in helping write it?

Now, I'm mainly going by anecdotal evidence of this happening, but it definitely feels like it comes up often enough when people discuss giving up on the fediverse, or not being interested in joining.

And I get the need for a mechanism for deleting potentially illegal content. That makes sense, definitely important.

But maybe it's worth opening a conversation on how to better address this, because "here's a list of followers and follows you lost, good luck" is not a great solution.

Maybe after there's a way to migrate and bring your posting history, if and whenever Mastodon supports that.

We've rebuilt the server using backups and the server is up and running. It is federating. However no one can login.
