📜 Related note on modern day genocide narratives. I grew up at a time when the term genocide referred to a deliberate effort to eradicate an entire/unique ethnic group. The concept was needed when the West had to come to grips with the industrial scale murder programme of the Nazi's Holocaust.
Before and after Hitler, Stalin's soviet-russia (and russians for all the centuries of their colonial expansionism) also aimed to eradicate "minority ethnicities" and their languages and cultures. The invading Spanish colonizers from 1500s onwards weren't exactly boy scouts in South America.
Since invading Tibet in 1950 and taking control of East Turkestan and South Mongolia the Chinese communist (since 2010s ethno-fascist) dictatorship may "only" have killed a significant minority of its newly-captive colonial subjects, but the regime's repressive policies are directly aimed at eradicating those now-occupied "minorities' " ethnic identity, culture, language... their frigging unique written scripts and history (!) while those *lebensraums* are totally dominated by the colonialist Chinese and their settlers.
The CCP is dead set on eradicating those colonized peoples. What is that if not genocide as it was initially conceived after WWII?
The Arabs of Palestine (a post-WWI concept), particularly the civilian population, have been subjected to post-Oct7 Israeli war crimes and massacres that should result in a trial in the Haque. Yet a little a history in useful: The Western Middle East and the entire Northern Africa (and even much of Spain and Portugal from 700s to late 1400s!) was overrun by Arabs (see: The Arab Conquest) incited by the newly created religion of Islam. All of the medieval cultures, languages and populations of North Africa were eradicated. Most Jews fled their ancestral lands, scattering across Europe and in pockets as early "untermensch" under newly-islamic fiefdoms in the region.
Facing repression nearly everywhere, the Nazi Holocaust was the final straw that incentiviced the Jewish people to try and reclaim their ancestral homeland (the idea of nation states had first bloomed in pre-democratic and still partially colonized Europe of 1800s).
Now, IMHO, the re-establishment of a Jewish home state (Israel) was a logical objective under the circumstances (which I realize makes me a "zionist"); the Jewish culture/religion has, due to its characteristics, survived countless generations in exile. Countless populations have been genocided for all eternity, but the Jews managed to hang on for a second chance.
The Arabs now settled in those previously Jewish ancestral lands had a choice to make when the exiled Jews started returning after mid-1940s. Some took Israeli citizenship (recognized by the constitution), others chose to wage war for their piece of the Arab Conquest...
The last Arab-run poll of Gaza population prior to Oct7 attack had 70% of Gazan adults supporting their *islamist* rulers (Hamas cancelled elections after gaining power, quelle surprise). Their specific goal was "from the river to the sea" i.e. total eradication of Israel along the lines of their ancestral Arab Conquest. Ethnically, linguistically and culturally identical to all neighbouring arabicized states they could resume their lives as majority Arabs in any of them (although they're now wary of the militancy!), but it's the principle of the Conquest. Moreover Arabs/islamists have claimed many ancient Jewish holy places as theirs (similar issues irritate the Hindus in India) so owning Israel is a koranic mission to hardline islamists. I'm an agnostic, but I feel that claiming other people's heritage as your religious conquest is a little over the top in modern world.
The Western liberals waving "Palestine" flags and calling rightwing Israelis and the ultra-orthodox settlers nazis are indeed *partially* right.
They should also understand *what* it is that they are supporting (re-enactment of Arab Conquest) and *why* (for the benefit of the anti-democratic Axis and to divide Western democracies).

Academic freedom is threatened by institutional conflicts of interest. Her research has been reinstated after she said she would take legal action.

World's democracies condemned the crackdown in Hong Kong, but did nothing to impose costs on the CCP dictatorship. Instead business (read: Chinese exports) only grew and grew. Gotta empower them despots! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hong Kong's pro-democracy struggle presented an opportunity for democracies to stand up against dictatorship, but we failed miserably.
Giving the #CCP yet another free pass (after its repressive occupation of Tibet in 1950-1951 and the 1989 Tiananmen massacre) surely emboldened #putin to invade #Ukraine in 2022.
Repression of Tibetans, Uighurs, South-Mongolians, Hongkongers... or a billion+ voiceless Chinese brought no consequences, but at least the invasion of *European* Ukraine gave us Europeans a limited wakeup.
It's not enough. We could have aided developing democracies when the Soviet empire fell in 1989-1991 and *not aided* repressive regimes. Instead we doubled down on doing business without limits and empowered the likes of Chinese dictatorship.
There are things I love about Europe, and things I am deeply ashamed of. Talking about human rights while empowering despots belongs in the latter category.
Some foreign individuals did "Stand with Hong Kong" though. At least one here in Mastodon is, as always, still busy fighting authoritarian takeover. Now in her homeland of the USA.

Muslims as a target of genocide is weird.
When it happens near Israel, things are fine and dandy, and it might not even really be happening despite the definite 24/7 footage from the area. Who knows what is happening?!
But when it allegedly happens in China with flakier evidence and questionable sources, it is verifiably the worst atrocity to ever happen and can be condemned with the power of a thousand suns.

I agree with all you've said.
However, #TikTok indoctrinates, too.
The #CCP is world-class in controlling the narrative on the internet, which OFC they do in the #PRC with the same app. #TikTok is pushing rightwing propaganda, just like the #DeadBirdSite: https://mashable.com/article/tiktok-recommendations-far-right-wing , https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-981-99-5110-9_8.And OFC, they control everything on it regarding #China. I'm positive that a #Short reporting on the plight of the #Uighurs would not be online for > 1 hour.

☝️ The *victims* of the regime might be forgiven (option not available inside the empire) if they fail to appreciate the scattered unofficial nostalgia for a leading supporting cadre who served as the Party's 'premier' for a decade while, well, 'stuff' kept happening to them.
Maybe, just maybe comrade Li would have been less extreme as the supreme leader, but isn't that entire point moot since all he really ended up *doing* was rubberstamping the #XiJinping's policies we've all come to love and appreciate?
The #PRC/#CCP stopped "biding time" a decade ago and comrade Li was right in the middle of it as supreme leader's number 2.

☝️ #Callamard & friends' callous #whataboutism and wilful misrepresentation of reality wrt. #russia's openly genocidal invasion of #Ukraine may sadly have reduced #AmnestyInternational's standing in the eyes of many #humanrights campaigners and supporters.
#Uighurs suffering #genocide under #lebensraum #colonialism of russia's 'no limits' ally #China deserve the support of all peoples lucky enough not to face state-planned eradication.
Perhaps Amnesty ought to reconsider their leadership representation to restore much needed credibility.

One minor thing that bothered me was that the otherwise very expansive piece on the #CCP #dictatorship didn't include even a single passing mention of #Tibetans, #Uighurs or #SouthMongolians facing #genocide in "Xi Jinping's China". I'd say those present a rather notable ethical dilemma for academic PRC engagers right there, but what do I know... 🤷🏻♂️
(the only references to so-called ethnic minorities were: “70 cases of dissent by Tibetans and Mongolians.” and “ ...the anti-foreign protests surrounding reports on the uprising in Tibetan China in the Western press”)
In a way that is quite enlightening of the fact that sinologists are practically by definition preoccupied with the already-siniziced 'Han' Chinese subjects while their colonial victims aren't considered actually Chinese(!). Ordinarily the CCP would be foaming at the mouth at such 'distortion of historical facts', but, with irony sometimes self-immolating right on cue, the Party seems quite at peace with the lack of spotlight on its #lebensraum activities...
One might also add that the Chinese peoples (plural!) are facing their own potentially irreversible cultural genocide in the form of CCP's thirdreich-esque "One Language" drive (see: ein volk ein reich ein führer) where the party-neutered and ideogram-simplified version of Pekingese shall replace *all* of the native languages across the empire. Only a century ago all 'regions' in the empire had their own languages (naturally) and only those with special needs would acquire 'mandarin' from, well, some mandarin...
They are *not* dialects of some mythical 'chinese' any more than the variety of Indo-European languages would be mere dialects of some mythical 'european', or god forbid 'aryan' uber tongue.

@AgreeableLandscape Ah, a switcheroo.
In your deleted first rant you were railing against the 'communists' who, according to you, deprived your family of everything nice.
Quick intro apparently needed: #CCP after 1970s is 'communist' in name only. After that murderous ship sailed the regime quickly switched to a hybrid #dictatorship model inspired by no other than #nazi #germany. It's now an #ethnonationalist dictatorship.
Creating 1800s era #Hongkong strawman to justify its repression of #Hongkongers for such a regime is a curious choice, for a #Canadian.
NB. #tankies post 1980s aren't cheering for the return of lenin's 'economics'; they're cheering for any repressive despot that aims to dispose of liberal democracy. Like #fascists. If it walks like a duck...
And if Hongkongers are, in your opinion, fair game for CCP's forced homogenization program (despite the treaty they signed in 1984 promising to respect Hongkongers' autonomy and civil rights), I'm sure you're pleased to hear that #Tibetans, #Uighurs and #Mongols have also been receiving that 'final solution' treatment. Right? And #Taiwan/#Formosa soon?
-
China's genocidal occupation of Tibet is of course the ultimate act of violence against #Tibetans.
A final solution after millenia of coexistance, not to mention the treaty of *eternal peace* signed in 822 after Tibetans had had enough and invaded Chang'an, the capital of Tang dynasty.
But, it also an act of grave violence against India, Nepal, Bhutan and Burma. All of these countries have suffered the loss of historic cultural, religious and economic exchanges with a friendly neighbour, only to be replaced by a hostile and military-expansionist Chinese #dictatorship.
The #Uighurs and (South) #Mongolians to the north have suffered that loss too, but they have a singular *far*more immediate worry as like Tibetans they too are marked for eradication by the CCP's Han-nationalist imperial regime.
Ideally the Chinese people themselves would end this nightmare, not only for all the Han peoples but also those repressed neighbours whose fate will forever be a stain on that previously civilized civilization, just like #nazism will remain on #german peoples' record.
Chinese peoples still have a closing window to reverse course before CCP's imperial projects become irreversible...

Imagine if the actual nazis were still genociding the native peoples and cultures in occupied lebensraum *for 70 fucking years and counting*...
Imagine the 'third reich' — completely unrepentent and still military-expansionist — was not only admitted to the United Nations but given a top seat with veto powers...
Just so that the industrialists and bankers of the democratic world could do unhindered business there, with cheap labour (the reeducation camps naturally fully utilized!) and not a labour law or civil libetry in sight!
Imagination isn't needed.
The CCP chinazis, who even adopted "legalism" from nazi #Germany to justify any and all acts of despotism under "rule-by-law", their dictatorship switched from nominal "communism" to #NationalSocialism (orig. nazional sozialismus i.e. nazism) and did all that. While killing more people than #stalin and #hitler *combined*. After WWII, 'the end of all wars'...
And *still* people of the embattled democracies are buying all they can from that regime, empowering it and paying its bills as is builds it concentration camps and its military power and its internal control machinery... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Ukrainians are now having to fight to stop #russian genocidal invasion exactly because the likes of #putin and #xijinping saw there were no *consequences* if you genocide #Tibetans or #Uighurs or even deprive #Hongkongers of their civil rights in that #BankingColony of the #CCP ...
Well, all that #indifference that has caused so much suffering to those neighbours of despotic imperialists will inevitably hit home at those indifferent democracies that chose to look away.
And it always was a choice.

#Thaksin joined the military-royalist-establishment 'complex' to help sideline the election winning reform movement... 👀
「The biggest concern internationally will be whether, given the growing US-China rivalry for primacy in Southeast Asia, the new government will shadow the military’s efforts to cozy up to Beijing, including sending back Uyghur, Tibetan and Chinese dissidents who had escaped from Beijing's clutches. The other question is whether he will also follow the military's behind-the-scenes efforts to ameliorate pressure on the Myanmar military dictatorship and its bloody civil war against its own people that began in February 2021 it has so far taken the lives of thousands of the country’s own citizens.」

The case for ‘lying flat’ (躺平)? 🤔
🇨🇳 CCP's subjects are working their asses off — building their own prison. Think about it.
The never-elected #dictatorship is nothing without its voiceless and rightless 'masses' as a labour force.
Now with the added pervasive #surveillance panopticon — achieved with foreign inventions and technology — those subjects have practically zero chance of ever organizing functional resistance against their armed overlords.
💡️ The only ways of *not collaborating* with their repressors are either 1) fleeing into exile or... 2) "lying flat" (躺平).
That is, doing the absolute minimum to survive without participating in any productive pursuits aiding the regime.
A (far) more dangerous option would, of course, be working to instill the #UnitedNations enshrined civil liberties which the CCP consider as its existential threat...

Or alternatively, imagine if free people in free countries just, you know, *chose* not to do business with genocidal, military-expansionist dictatorships... 🤔
I know it's a really weird idea, especially if you personally aren't currently being genocided by that particular regime.
The Polish freedom fighters had a word for this odd phenomenom though. They even founded a rather successful labour union named after that concept. Without #solidarity between peoples, would the #soviet #russian #dictatorship have crumbled when it did?
Another thing is that the various #despots and #authoritarians are increasingly networking and joining forces to fight the evils of #democracy and #humanrights globally. Aiding, abetting or doing business with any of them makes all of them more powerful.
