  1. "In February, Sheffield Hallam University, home to the Helena Kennedy Centre for International Justice (HKC), a leading research institution focused on human rights, ordered one of its best-known professors, Laura Murphy, to cease research on supply chains and forced labour in China."

Academic freedom is threatened by institutional conflicts of interest. Her research has been reinstated after she said she would take legal action.

  2. World's democracies condemned the crackdown in Hong Kong, but did nothing to impose costs on the CCP dictatorship. Instead business (read: Chinese exports) only grew and grew. Gotta empower them despots! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hong Kong's pro-democracy struggle presented an opportunity for democracies to stand up against dictatorship, but we failed miserably.

Giving the #CCP yet another free pass (after its repressive occupation of Tibet in 1950-1951 and the 1989 Tiananmen massacre) surely emboldened #putin to invade #Ukraine in 2022.

Repression of Tibetans, Uighurs, South-Mongolians, Hongkongers... or a billion+ voiceless Chinese brought no consequences, but at least the invasion of *European* Ukraine gave us Europeans a limited wakeup.

It's not enough. We could have aided developing democracies when the Soviet empire fell in 1989-1991 and *not aided* repressive regimes. Instead we doubled down on doing business without limits and empowered the likes of Chinese dictatorship.

There are things I love about Europe, and things I am deeply ashamed of. Talking about human rights while empowering despots belongs in the latter category.

Some foreign individuals did "Stand with Hong Kong" though. At least one here in Mastodon is, as always, still busy fighting authoritarian takeover. Now in her homeland of the USA.

  3. ☝️ The *victims* of the regime might be forgiven (option not available inside the empire) if they fail to appreciate the scattered unofficial nostalgia for a leading supporting cadre who served as the Party's 'premier' for a decade while, well, 'stuff' kept happening to them.

Maybe, just maybe comrade Li would have been less extreme as the supreme leader, but isn't that entire point moot since all he really ended up *doing* was rubberstamping the #XiJinping's policies we've all come to love and appreciate?

The #PRC/#CCP stopped "biding time" a decade ago and comrade Li was right in the middle of it as supreme leader's number 2.

  4. “Rahile's story cuts deep with the vindictiveness with which Beijing has erased Uyghur culture. Her only crime was to be an anthropologist. When authorities detained Rahile, they also sent bulldozers to demolish the 1000-year old historical town she spent her life studying. ”

  5. ☝️ #Callamard & friends' callous #whataboutism and wilful misrepresentation of reality wrt. #russia's openly genocidal invasion of #Ukraine may sadly have reduced #AmnestyInternational's standing in the eyes of many #humanrights campaigners and supporters.

#Uighurs suffering #genocide under #lebensraum #colonialism of russia's 'no limits' ally #China deserve the support of all peoples lucky enough not to face state-planned eradication.

Perhaps Amnesty ought to reconsider their leadership representation to restore much needed credibility.

  6. China's genocidal occupation of Tibet is of course the ultimate act of violence against #Tibetans.

A final solution after millenia of coexistance, not to mention the treaty of *eternal peace* signed in 822 after Tibetans had had enough and invaded Chang'an, the capital of Tang dynasty.

But, it also an act of grave violence against India, Nepal, Bhutan and Burma. All of these countries have suffered the loss of historic cultural, religious and economic exchanges with a friendly neighbour, only to be replaced by a hostile and military-expansionist Chinese #dictatorship.

The #Uighurs and (South) #Mongolians to the north have suffered that loss too, but they have a singular *far*more immediate worry as like Tibetans they too are marked for eradication by the CCP's Han-nationalist imperial regime.

Ideally the Chinese people themselves would end this nightmare, not only for all the Han peoples but also those repressed neighbours whose fate will forever be a stain on that previously civilized civilization, just like #nazism will remain on #german peoples' record.

Chinese peoples still have a closing window to reverse course before CCP's imperial projects become irreversible...
