  1. The recording of the May 14th, 2026 #bhyve Production User Call is up:

    youtu.be/St14DAYnYWs

We discussed upcoming events, #TrueNAS CORE soft landings, Vulcan and CUDA on FreeBSD, #CoreBoot ARM64, OpenBSD VM IPv6 addressing, an open source network switch, EDK II updates, GPU Pass-Through, and more!

  2. I will legit setup Enabling HTTPS certs in Tailscale just to get this #$&%# icon to go away.

I know the traffic is encrypted but stuff like this bugs me enough to take on a whole new project.

  3. So I decided to create a self hosted search engine on my NAS. Turns out its not as difficult as you might think.
I also get to opt out of who I use in my search engine. And best of all I own my own data.

So what do we think? I'll just keep it private of course on my internal network. I'll access it via tail-scale remotely.

  4. Today I was working on a new project, move from Synology to TrueNAS.

Now I managed to install Immich and NextCloud. As alternative for Drive and Photos.

I just came agross this link. Has anyone have a good tip for me in this process?

  5. This weekend I finally had some time to get my TrueNAS server up and running with Immich on it.

Now my photos are replicated across two devices and the only thing I need now is the remote backup, which it will be another TrueNAS server at the office.

Also, it's the first time I had the guts to delete all my photos from Google Photos.

  6. @deach Don’t follow accounts, but topics by following hashtags that matter to you.

Here’s a few common, generic-ish ones as an inspirational starting point.

    - #HomeLab
    - #selfHosting
    - #Containers

Of course pretty much any project or product uses a hastag. Try whatever thing you use yourselves or are interested in.

    e.g.:

    - #TrueNAS
    - #OPNsense
    - #Podman
    - #Docker
    - #HomeAssistant
    - #ESPhome

  7. MotionEye (HA-addon) has become unreliable in recording video fies, it's pretty random if/when it records video, even when set to "continouus recording".
Going to try frigate, pulling it into TrueNAS directly now.

    @markuswerle @lxrs @christian Danke für den Support

  9. @lxrs

  11. pffff.... debugging why #nextcloud update fails in #kube from 33.0.0.16.... at least mail app fails with missing file. Seems the update rsync for code from container to nfs share takes ages... why is my nfs to #truenas so damned slow now...?

  18. TrueNAS.

  20. #selfhosting can be daunting at first, it involves a few steps:

    0. obtain a domain name
    1. sign certificates to prevent MITM and create trust with for example #letsencrypt
    2. understand the process of proxying connections and hosts, #nginx_proxy_manager
    3. host your applications in a maintainable way with for example #truenas

Once you get the hang of this process, it gets really easy to spin up new services.

  24. Blogged how I converted my #TrueNAS Core 13.3 to plain #FreeBSD 15 + #Sylve while keeping all the drives and data intact.

#ZFS 10, was effektiv 4 GB Speicherplatz wäre.

  26. #homelab gurus! I am considering replacing our old #Synology DS1525 with a #TrueNAS, mostly because I want to run #Immich, #Paperlessngx, and #jellyfin on it without having to deal with Syno's out-of-date #Docker implementation.

If you're running TrueNAS, two questions:

    1) how hard was it to get automated backups of #Windows and #Linux systems set up? I do appreciate Syno's built-in backup tools.

    2) how bad an idea would it be to run these compute loads on the NAS vs a separate compute node? We are *not* heavy users - just the two of us and we're pretty casual about home use, so it feels like loads would be pretty minimal...

Any thoughts and suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

  27. I’ve recently discovered Open Archiver in a (German) YouTube video (youtube.com/watch?v=TXd2X7Ln_V), which allows you to archive your emails from various different email providers. It seems to be still a very new project, but it looks promising to me. And it’s completely open source.

  28. So das neue NAS ist einsatzbereit. Das (proprietäre) Betriebssystem würde ich gerne ersetzen. Jetzt ist die Frage mit was. #ZimaOS, #TrueNAS, #Proxmox
    Soll auch nicht-Nerd-Kompatibel sein.

  30. Welp, we may very well lose seriously the best #FOSS #NAS option we had, #TrueNAS at some point - maybe even soon. @[email protected] rightly mentioned that this smells a whole lot like the whole #RedHat/#CentOS debacle not that long ago. This sucks, but meh, I’m liking #OpenMediaVault more and more these days - prolly not as sophisticated, but certainly does the job and is super simple to setup (#RaspberryPi as first class citizen too).

  31. If you want a sovereign NAS it is usually best to build your own. That way you know what you're getting and can pick between two good NAS distro options: TrueNAS and Rockstor. While there are other options these two stand out from the crowd.

If you want a commercial open source device from Europe then buying a Rockstor system from Broadberry Data Systems seem to be pretty much the only option.

  32. TrueNAS devices can be bought from iXsystems, but that means buying a devices from an U.S. vendor, which is not optimal from digital sovereignty perspective.

Broadberry Data Systems, an UK-based company with multiple offices around the world offers Rockstor-based storage servers in the enterprise price range.

OpenMediaVault-based devices don't seem to be available at all.

  34. Took me three days to get Matter over Thread working on my #HomeAssistant. Bought a #ZBT-2 but sent it back, because it didn't work and bought a #Sonoff MG24. But it was the fault of the VM where HA was running in on my #TrueNAS server. Virtual NIC's don't play well with ipv6. So decided to move HA from my IOT network to my General network. I also missed the step syncing my credentials (whose idea was it to put that in the "Troubleshoot" menu?? Ok, probably was a logical place).

  38. The EMC disk shelf decided it wanted to ramp the fans to "taking off the flight deck of an aircraft carrier", so I decided to updated all the Proxmox nodes, the NAS, and then power cycle the EMC disk shelf.

Fortunately, that worked and everything is back online. Definitely a pain in the ass though...
