Die sogenannten „Vereinigten Staaten“ feiern am 4. Juli 2026 den 250. Jahrestag der #Unabhängigkeitserklärung. Wir, die #Ureinwohner dieses Landes, müssen nicht lange suchen, um die Heuchelei zu erkennen, die darin liegt, ein Dokument zu feiern, das unsere Vorfahren als „gnadenlose indianische Wilde“ bezeichnet. Die #Haudenosaunee-Konföderation verfügt über die älteste ununterbrochene partizipative Demokratie der Welt, bekannt als #Gayanesshagowa, das Große Gesetz des Friedens. Viele der Strukturen, die für die Schaffung von Gewaltenteilung in der US-Regierung gelobt werden, sind direkt vom Gayanesshagowa übernommen – wurden jedoch verdreht, um den Interessen der „Gründerväter“ zu dienen, die für den Völkermord und die Versklavung unserer schwarzen Vorfahren verantwortlich waren. Rites of Passage: The #StrawberryCeremony

"Traditionally, the strawberry ceremony is for girls after their first menstrual cycle. However, today it is offered to folks who identify as #TwoSpirit and to those who didn’t have the opportunity to participate as young people, like me. I didn’t have the chance to go through this ceremony decades ago as an adolescent, and I am eagerly looking forward to my own strawberry ceremony experience this year. In anticipation, I researched the strawberry ceremony and talked to those who had already experienced it to learn more.

"Strawberries are highly significant to the #Wabanaki and other Native tribes; as part of the traditional Wabanaki diet before colonization, strawberries are indigenous. Natives used them for general health and to treat various ailments. Because of their shape, many Natives refer to strawberries as the 'heart berry.' The central plant and berry symbolize the mother, and the vines and future plants represent the connection between the Mother, her children, and her grandchildren. Strawberries could not grow without a vast, sprawling root system that connects the plants, like the veins that connect the heart to the rest of the body and sustain life."

Today is day 10 of the LGBTQ alphabet series: Wrapping up with a number and a letter to represent indigenous people.

2S is for Two-Spirit.

While the term Two-Spirit or 2S is relatively new, Two-Spirit people have always been part of North American Indigenous culture. They are part of the Queer community and deserve acceptance and respect everywhere.

The general understanding is that "Two-Spirit" as a pan-tribal umbrella term came into being at an inter-tribal gathering in Winnipeg in 1990. The term is meant to honor diverse traditional gender roles within Indigenous cultures before European contact.

For Indigenous people and allies, de-colonization is more than history. It is seeing past Western concepts of the male/female binary and embracing one's true self as understood by one's heritage.
