Yvfkē (pronounced yuff-kee) is the Mvskoke word for evening or dusk. I call these earrings 'Yvfkē' because the colors remind me of the sky after sunset, before it becomes completely dark.

Ue-Hvtkv (Ocean) Beaded Drop Earrings

I'm back with new beadwork and I'm excited to teach y'all more Mvskoke 🩵💙🖤

These drop earrings are inspired by the darkness and mysterious, haunting beauty of deep bodies of water. They are called Ue-hvtkv (pronounced we-hut-guh), meaning ocean in the Mvskoke language. I made them using glass beads in shades of blue, turquoise, and black, with stainless steel findings. Measures 6 cm long (~2 1/2 inches).

I've been slowing making my way through the Braiding Sweetgrass audiobook. I expected to enjoy it, based on what I had heard. But oh my, it's beautiful.

I'm still going through it. I've decided to not rush. I feel that's appropriate.

I've found it having two effects on me:
1. Being more cognizant of my relationship with nature. I am not from a Native background, but I am a Southerner, with a lot of farmers and laborers in my family. Not the same, exactly, but I do think there's a connection to the land that is similar.

2. I've become much more interested in Native history and stories. The telling of the story of Sky Mother was fascinating and surprisingly moving to me. I've been a history buff for a long time, and have been learning more. But this book has really added fuel to that fire.

In trying to learn more about the history of my area (Southeast Georgia) I've been looking up information about the Muskogee - I learned of them as the Creek when I was a kid, but that's not how they referred to themselves. I've found some language resources and I am starting to see about learning a bit. Not to become fluent, but to just expose myself a bit more.

My last cats existed mostly on Merrick cat food but that seems to be on the wane, so I've been trying various foods for Tenētkē (kitten) who seems a little fussy. She loves Tiki Cat & Weruva, hates Tiny Tiger (Chewy) & Purina Pro. I'd really like to have a variety for her and of course cheap is better but if she won't eat it, it's not cheap.

Speaking of colonizer names for Native Nations, recently I was shocked the special election item to change the official name of the Nation to Mvskoke Nation from Muscogee (Creek) Nation did get a majority but failed to get the 2/3rds required to amend the constitution. Creek is of 100% colonizer origin. 😢
