  1. #ThunderBayON - City Spaces - Honouring Indigenous Space and Place

"The City of Thunder Bay is committed to honouring and celebrating Indigenous space and place. The Indigenous Relations and Inclusion Office will work to collaborate on new place-making initiatives and opportunities for welcoming spaces in the city to identify heritage recognition and honour history and culture by maintaining and enhancing existing spaces.

    The #SpiritGarden

The Spirit Garden was built in collaboration with Indigenous and city partners through the Prince Arthur’s Landing development, which was completed in 2011. The Spirit Garden is a space to honour the history and cultures of Indigenous peoples in the city. The Circle is reflected in the overall design of the spaces to represent inclusiveness and bridging of worldviews.

    The #HonouringCircle (#SacredFire)

On the shore of #Kitchigami (Big Ocean/Lake Superior) looking East with #Nanabijou (Sleeping Giant) on the horizon, the Honouring Circle maintains the vision of honouring #TurtleIsland through its configuring of stones surrounding the fire pit. The fire pit is also placed in the centre of the Medicine Wheel, to honour the teaching principles of the #Anishinaabe.

The #HonouringCircle is a place of contemplation, ceremony and contribution. The Anishinaabe have always recognized the geographic and cultural importance of this area.

The #CelebrationCircle (Outdoor Theatre) – Within The Spirit Garden

The form of the Celebration Circle is inspired by #RoyThomas’ concept for the space to pay homage to Turtle Island based on the Anishinaabe Creation Story. The site was designed in collaboration between Indigenous artist and architect #RyanGorrie of Thunder Bay and #BrookMcIlroy architects. Its form is inspired by traditional Anishinaabe bentwood building techniques using wood harvested by #IndigenousArtist #GeorgePrice and fabricated at #FortWilliamFirstNation.

The Circle symbolizes an '#inclusive circle' between all people and creation and is a way to honour the local Indigenous and Original Peoples of the land. It serves as a common ground – a spiritual place, a place of meditation and celebration gathering together all cultures. This space is embraced as a teaching and gathering space where stories can be shared from the perspective of the First Nations peoples who have lived on this shoreline for millennia.

  3. With Anthr-pic sucking up rare physical books and destroying them, I have an idea.

We get organized and save what we can. New libraries/museums. Maybe a regular event for the community to spend time learning about certain texts, where they can be viewed in other parts of the world, etc.

    📚💡

New England what do we think about this? Greater Boston?

  5. Does anyone have some good resources on indigenous cultural burning practices? I'm hoping to add some links to the wildfire doc.

Looking for explanations of what it is, examples, and ways people (especially settlers) can support cultural burning practices (e.g., politicians or government officials we can write letters to, legislation we can advocate for, organizations or indigenous groups or leaders we can support, other actions we can take).

    Boosts and quotes welcome!

  9. #Indigenous at the #UnitedNations Expose #AIDatacenters and Racially-Biased #Misinformation

    By #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, July 14, 2026

GENEVA -- "The mediocre, middle-of-the-road approach to #AI at the United Nations was countered by testimony today from #IndigenousPeoples pointing out that #ArtificialIntelligence is not a solution, and is doing great harm to Indigenous with derogatory misinformation and massive #datacenters that are poisoning the #land, #water and #air.

"#JaimieWilliams, #MiamiNation in #Indiana, speaking on behalf of the Society of Native Nations, at the U.N. Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, responded to the A.I. summary presented this morning. Williams said the summary does not reflect the true impact of artificial intelligence, particularly in the way the technology is powered.

" 'AI data centers are rapidly being constructed on the land of Indigenous Peoples without free, prior and #InformedConsent from us.'

" 'My people came out of the water, the #SaintJosephRiver in the southeast of #LakeMichigan, along that river there are several data centers,' she said, pointing out that Indigenous across #TurtleIsland share similar stories.

" 'These sacred waterways and lands are being used for A.I. data centers.'

" 'I was once convinced artificial intelligence could help my tribe build our language and culture, but AI is not a sustainable solution.'

" 'There is currently no available technology available to power A.I. without poisoning the water, drying up the rivers and causing further contamination in the territories of Indigenous Peoples, who are already disproportionately affected.' "

  11. Killed the TurtleIs.land Bluesky PDS today. No diss on #Bluesky. A PDS is great if you must have data sovereignty but that's about it. You still have Bluesky moderation lording over you, which can be pathetic for non-dominant cultures. To add the other necessary pieces for true near independence is a MUCH larger project than a part time Linux admin can take on.

Ultimately, #Mastodon is much more of an of, by and for the people social media...

  15. In 2024, an Indigenous burial site was found during construction on Withrow Avenue, near Riverdale Park East in Toronto. Where others see a “hole” in the ground awaiting investigation, journalist Gabrielle McMann sees a window into the city's complex pre-colonial history — and a deeper sense of belonging.

  17. On this #WorldTurtleDay I honour #TurtleIsland. I have known pleasure across many different places in you. I respect your spirits. I like many of the creatures who call you home, and even some of the people. I believe you will survive the current trauma, will heal and recover from it. Grace and honour to you, Turtle Island.
