By #UnitedAmericanIndiansOfNewEngland (#UAINE) Updated November 22, 2025 - #Resist!
"Since 1970, Indigenous people & their allies have gathered at noon on Cole’s Hill in Plymouth to commemorate a National Day of Mourning on the US Thanksgiving holiday. Many Native people do not celebrate the arrival of the Pilgrims & other European settlers. Thanksgiving Day is a reminder of the genocide of millions of Native people, the theft of Native lands and the erasure of Native cultures. Participants in National Day of Mourning honor Indigenous ancestors and Native resilience. It is a day of remembrance and spiritual connection, as well as a protest against the racism and oppression that Indigenous people continue to experience worldwide.

Cole’s Hill (above #PlymouthRock), #PlymouthMAJoin us as we continue to create a true awareness of Native peoples and history. Help shatter the untrue image of the Pilgrims, and the unjust system based on #WhiteSupremacy, #SettlerColonialism, #sexism, #homophobia and the profit-driven destruction of the Earth that they and other European settlers introduced to these shores.
#Solidarity with #IndigenousStruggles throughout the world!
From #TurtleIsland to #Palestine, #Colonialism is a Crime!
While many supporters will attend in person, we will also Livestream the event from Plymouth.
United American Indians of New England (decolonizing since 1970)
[email protected] * #UAINENo sit-down social, but box lunches will be available.
Masks required. What is National Day of Mourning?
An annual tradition since 1970, National Day of Mourning is a solemn, spiritual and highly political day. Many of us fast from sundown the day before through the afternoon of that day (and have a social after #NDOM so that participants in NDOM can break their fasts). We are mourning our ancestors and the #genocide of our peoples and the theft of our lands. NDOM is a day when we mourn, but we also feel our strength in action and solidarity.
When and where is Day of Mourning?
Thursday, November 27, 2025 (U.S. “thanksgiving” day) at Cole’s Hill, Plymouth, Massachusetts, 12 noon SHARP. Cole’s Hill is the hill above Plymouth Rock in the Plymouth historic waterfront area. The rallies and marches will last until approximately 3 pm.
Will there be a march?
Yes, there will be a march through the historic district of Plymouth. Plymouth agreed, as part of the settlement of 10/19/98, that UAINE may march on National Day of Mourning without the need for a permit as long as we give the town advance notice.
Program
Although we very much welcome our non-Native supporters to join us, it is a day when only Indigenous people speak about our history and the struggles that are taking place throughout the Americas. Speakers are by invitation only. This year’s NDOM will be livestreamed from Plymouth.
Note that NDOM is not a powwow or commercial event, so we ask that people do not sell merchandise or distribute leaflets at the outdoor program. We will have UAINE t-shirts available for sale following the march.
We also ask that you do not eat (unless you must do so for medical reasons) at the outdoor speak-out and march out of respect for the participants who are fasting.
Dress for the weather!Social
There will be box lunches available for distribution after the march (turkey and vegan), but we will not have a full sit-down social.
Livestream

#NativeNations Mobilize Against #ICE Targeting and Profiling
#Native Nations across #TurtleIsland are working to ensure their citizens’ safety amid rising reports of #IndigenousPeople being #RaciallyProfiled, #stopped, #questioned, and mistakenly #detained for undocumented #immigrants. They’re also reminding their citizens to find strength and resilience in the histories their communities have already overcome.
by Luna Reyna, #UnderscoreNativeNews [#UNN] + #IndianCountryToday [#ICT]
"Tribes across the U.S. are responding to reports of Indigenous people being racially profiled, stopped, questioned and mistakenly detained by federal agents targeting undocumented immigrants as part of the Trump administration’s sweeping immigrant crackdown.
Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren said in a Jan. 24 news release that his 'office has received multiple reports from Navajo citizens that they have had negative, and sometimes traumatizing, experiences with federal agents targeting undocumented immigrants in the Southwest.'
"'We now know that Navajo people and enrolled members of other tribes are being detained in Phoenix and other cities by #ICE,' Navajo Nation Council Speaker Crystalyne Curley said during a Naabik’íyáti’ committee meeting on Jan. 23."

#Algonquins say proposed #NuclearWaste site near #OttawaRiver prioritizes money over safety
By Tom Fennario, Oct 18, 2024
"Verna Polson steps out of the boat and onto the sand bar of Pointe aux Baptêmes. She walks a few feet before turning back towards the water, where the August morning light shimmers off the waves.
"There she makes a tobacco offering to the Ottawa River. Except for her, this waterway that divides modern-day Quebec and Ontario is known by its original Algonquin name: Kichi-Sìbì.
"The Great River.
"'Kichi-Sìbì is a place where our ancestors used to travel. That was their highway,' explains Polson. 'This is how they kept the land, protected from many different nations.
"Polson grew up near the Kichi-Sìbì in #TemiskamingFirstNation, about 300 kilometers north of here. On this day, she finds herself downstream to take in not only the beach of #PointeAuxBaptêmes but also the industrial smokestacks of the #ChalkRiverLaboratories. It sits less than a kilometre upstream from where Polson offered her tobacco- the site sticks out in contrast to the rolling hills and blue waters of the Kichi-Sìbì.
"This place is known as the cradle of the Canadian #nuclear industry.
"'I think about the water, I think about the animals and think about future generations and what they’re going to be left with,' says Polson. 'And that’s something I don’t want to leave my granddaughter and my great-grandchildren as something to deal with this nuclear waste.'
"Established in 1944 about 200 kilometres northwest of Ottawa, Chalk River Laboratories is famous for research that led to the development of the #CANDU (CANada Deuterium #Uranium) reactor, one of the most efficient and safe nuclear reactors ever created, according to officials in the industry.
"Researchers at Chalk River have gone on to win Nobel prizes, and for decades, it was a world leader in the creation of radioisotopes for fighting cancer.
"However, Chalk River also has a darker legacy which includes supplying fuel for American #NuclearWarheads and in 1952, being home to the world’s first #NuclearMeltdown.
"But much has changed since then. Chalk River Laboratories has been absorbed into #AtomicEnergyCanada, a #CrownCorporation that contracts out to a company called Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (#CNL) to operate it.
"CNL is currently in the midst of a government funded $1.2-billion facelift. But before it can be transformed into a state-of-the-art nuclear campus, nearly 80 years of #radioactive legacy waste must be addressed.
"In a statement, CNL says 'While this waste was stored according to the best practices and regulations at the time, standards have changed.'
"So the solution CNL is trying to get off the ground is called the Near Surface Disposal Facility (#NSDF).
"Others might call it a dump.
"'This facility will not bring great things to the water or the land,' says Polson, 'every one knows across #TurtleIsland, #WaterIsLife.'"

#Akwesasne is part of the #Mohawk Nation, one of the six nations of the #Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Its residents’ #AncestralTerritory, which includes Barnhart Island, extends across the #Canada - #USA border, and includes parts of #Ontario, #Quebec and #NewYork state. For decades, factories surrounding the reserve dumped now-banned chemicals into the #StLawrenceRiver, #contaminating the land and water. But Barnhart Island is upstream of the contamination — the breeze is still sweet and the water is clear. And soon, Akswesasne #TribalGovernment may sign a settlement agreement with the State of New York, ceding its title to the island forever.
For the #LandDefenders who were arrested, reclaiming #BarnhartIsland goes hand-in-hand with protecting what’s left of their territory that is still healthy enough for them to gather medicine, hunt, fish, conduct ceremonies and heal. They aren’t willing to sell their homeland — not for any price.
Freelance #journalist Brandi Morin and #photojournalist Ian Willms spent five days on the territory in June to document the fight for clean land.

I recently saw some folks confuse the #Dine peoples (Navajo; Southwestern US area) with the #Dene peoples in Western sub-Arctic Canada. I can understand the confusion if you just look at spelling or if you've heard them both pronounced the same way.
They're vastly different first peoples.
