How People Ditched the Search for Exploitative Jobs & Empowered Themselves:
( Future History from a Liberated Utopia )

Too many people were unemployed, anxious in their long job searches, ghosted by employers, sitting around spinning their wheels ( hopefully learning new skills to stay up to date ).

Exploitative corporations and their hierarchical mindset never suited the contemporary generations anyway. So people chose to connect with their peers, and formed egalitarian, democratic, radically transparent, employee-owned co-operatives. Equal share, equal pay, equal say, and the pride of ownership, rather than the drudgery of wage-slavery!

People pooled their time, energy, skills, money, and any other resources they could, to become owners of their own businesses, running them with pride.

In all walks of business – pizzerias, ride-sharing services, delivery services, home repair services, remote-first software companies, and pet-sitting services, people finally decided to keep their earnings rather than hand over the lion's share to some corporation.

People enjoyed all the personal freedom, creative leeway, collegial work environment and informal, no-nonsense directness that came with the pride of ownership. In many cases, family units started their own co-operatives with all adult members owning equal shares.

Aight so me and two other good folks are starting a tech workers' cooperative. We've got plenty of stuff against us.
None of us have worked in a workers' cooperative or other kind of democratic workplace before.
There are barely a handful workers' coops in Norway. The national umbrella org for coops in Norway is basically dead and doesn't care about workers' coops at all.
Our coop is geographically distributed evenly along Norway, which means our northernmost worker-member would have to drive 24 hours by car or 44 hours by public transport to reach our southernmost worker-member.

We've put in effort to reduce our weaknesses, and we've got things going for us too.
We've met and continue to meet with other workers' coops to learn from them and collaborate. We've got potential clients and pilot projects. We've got hardware. We've got tech and business know-how. We're working on the formal stuff, bylaws and agreements.

It's going great.

I don't really view it as a 'tax dodge'. One of the purposes of tax is to assist government policies - for example increasing tax on cigarettes to discourage smoking, or exempting electric cars from road tax to help make them more attractive than fossil fuel cars.

It is worth noting though that 'indirect ownership' models like employee trusts are often viewed with suspicion by the co-operative movement - for example on the grounds that the trustees, although mandated to act in what they see as the interests of employees, may not be elected, or subject to re-election, by the employees.

My own view, however, is that co-operative models are not always appropriate - their basic requirement, for example, is a long-term stable and engaged membership constituency, so unsuited to sectors with high staff turnover. I therefore tend to think there is no one-size-fits-all organisational model, and diversity of options is a strength, even while I think the remote shareholder, investment-led structure of anglosphere big business has been a disaster for people and planet.
