  4. Imagine a company creating in-house CRM as a replacement for salesforce. Pretending that the in-house version is somehow better -- would be discarding millions of hours that were put into salesforce

Instead, it's much more productive to use salesforce as a prototype while making the next version with better terms

  5. evaluating #LLM carefully and voicing concerns is not hate

putting human before any system, algorithm or other construct is not hate

it is appreciation for human ingenuity, reasoning and knowledge

    it is love of humanity
    nothing less

after six years hype we see hard evidence
#salami is producing #slop at scale
wasting resources, eroding trust and putting #democracy, #privacy, #freedom, #ownership, #copyright ... you name it at risk (spoken diplomatically)

  6. [P] I'm sorry, but the "You don't own anything!" argument continues to bug me. You haven't eince the seventh gen! The only exceptions were the Wii, DS, PSP, and 3DS. If a game on a closed system requires a patch to play it properly (or at all), and that patch is licensed to you? You don't own it. The only games one owns are on jailbroken consoles, DRM-free PC games, or easily-cracked fully-patched PC games. And I'll explain why.

  7. Sony PlayStation no longer wants us to own video games. As I understand, they implied we are only being licensed to the games. Days ago, they emailed users the full Terms of Service or something similar, asserting Sony PlayStation policy. Ok, what's your opinion? Because I very rarely play video games. Plus, I have never owned a console.

  8. Bought a Kindle book last night. $9.99 for "The Hot Rock" by Donald E. Westlake. I read it years and years ago and wanted a copy. (Actually would like to get all the entire Dortmunder series eventually.)

There are FIVE pages of ads between the cover page and the start of the actual book. I knew that I wasn't really "buying" the book. I'm merely getting use of it for as long as Amazon allows. But I'm drawing the line at FIVE pages of ads at the start of the book.

I tried returning it this morning, but it "isn't eligible" for return.

Time to go to bookshop.org and get a copy, a real, physical copy, of the book for my shelf.

  9. "We force animals to adapt to the constraints of farming modelled on the mass production of manufactured goods, whereas farming should respect the ethological needs of animals. This is a transgression because we grant ourselves an absolute right that we do not have. This violence towards animals is a condemnation of us. Yet our relationship with animals could be an opportunity to think about a way of inhabiting the Earth that makes coexistence with other species possible. This requires new foundations for ethics and politics."

  10. #Ownership gives a claim to economic value. #Governance gives decision-making authority. Sometimes they overlap. Sometimes they do not.

  11. RE: mastodon.online/@tomshardware/

Another reason modern internet life sucks. We rely on cloud services you have no control over as a business. First time I've noticed it with a big service though.

Like consumer streaming services: When people stopp buying MP3s they run the risk of only being able to access what the streaming services have licenses for, and you're at risk if they go bust. I have gaps in my Deezer playlists because of things disappearing. History getting lost for one reason or another.

  13. this may sound insignificant on a "grand scheme" or from populist perspective, but in practice it's actually very helpful and useful, and most importantly very grounded in reality.

especially when it comes to entertainment services and their "discounts" under certain conditions, or quiet renewals. theguardian.com/commentisfree/

  15. it seems game publishers really want to set up their own cartels - similarly to DRAM companies - but in cloud gaming.

'The "advent of streaming," Zelnick said, is something that Take-Two believes is "right around the corner, in terms of having something that's low latency and really works well for consumers. Machines that weren't game machines before will become game machines."' pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/ta

  16. Engadget: PlayStation just struck a hammer blow to game preservation. “So, that’s it then. As of 2028, game discs will be a thing of the past for PlayStation. And after previously attempting to do so five years ago — before a backlash prompted it to reverse course — Sony is finally shuttering the digital storefronts on PS3 and PlayStation Vita. It doesn’t seem like the company will back […]

  17. “zipf maneuvers: on non-reprintable materials”, by andrew c. wenaus & germán sierra

    cliccare per ingrandire

    https://www.erratumpress.com/zipf-maneuvers
