  1. Three journalists I admire the most work at the Guardian (Williams, Hyde and Malik) but of the three I'd guess I would've expected Hyde to be the least inclined to candid responses

'The resilience it takes to be, say, a woman in Afghanistan or a little girl in Congo is quite simply utterly inconceivable to me. I basically think that everything I have, and everything that I have achieved, is overwhelmingly the result of luck and good fortune, and not remotely to do with any kind of exceptionalist skill'

  3. If you watch her body language it seems that she wasn't expecting this kind of interview. He is the guy who is fully on adrenalin after he just flew into the eye of a cyclone and at the same time her house was hit by one.

Her reaction is what we all should be feeling and then again I hope we wouldn't.

  7. An analysis carried out for the Guardian has found that in areas with the fewest sunny days, solar panels could bring annual savings of about £450 a year on the average household electricity bill. In areas with the brightest skies, this figure could climb to more than £600.

Findings provided by the UK solar firm Recharge Renewable.

  14. It’s Weekend, Let’s Read: Who is the author with more works in the Guardian’s list of 100 greatest novels of all time?

The Guardian made a list of the 100 greatest novels of all time. You can see the list here, with links to how Guardian’s made it. First place of the list is George Eliot with Middlemarch, but I thought to check which authors had more works in this list. And it’s Virginia Woolf with five books!

Second place in the number of the novels in the list are Jane Austen and Charles Dickens, both with four books.

Best part? There all in public domain, so you want to start with any of these four authors, right here, right now, head to Project Gutenberg and let’s read!

Aldo is what happens when you take a miniature pincher, give him zero respect for physics, and wrap him in the confidence of a biker who survived the 90s without a helmet. He’s small, sure. So is a live grenade. Size is irrelevant when the attitude shows up first and demands rent. He wears a hoodie like it’s a statement, not a garment. This dog doesn’t get cold. 17. Rashid Khalidi on Genocide Complicity, From Columbia to the White House

Prominent Palestinian historian Rashid Khalidi discusses the anti-colonial struggle against Israel, #US and European complicity in the genocide and why he won't teach at Columbia in the fall.

    from #DropSiteNews
    Aug 05, 2025

On this week’s Drop Site News livestream, Sharif Abdel Kouddous speaks with prominent Palestinian scholar and historian #RashidKhalidi, a professor emeritus at Columbia U. and the author of "The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine.”

Khalidi recently published an article in the #Guardian newspaper explaining why he is withdrawing from teaching a fall course at Columbia. This comes after #Columbia agreed to pay a $200 million settlement to the #Trump administration after it accused the university of failing to protect Jewish students during campus protests against #Israel’s genocidal assault on #Gaza...

  18. ‘A million calls an hour’: Israel relying on Microsoft cloud for expansive surveillance of Palestinians

Revealed: The Israeli military undertook an ambitious project to store a giant trove of Palestinians’ phone calls on #Microsoft’s servers in Europe

    from #TheGuardian #Guardian
    Harry Davies and Yuval Abraham
    Wed 6 Aug 2025 07.00 EDT

According to three Unit 8200 sources, the cloud-based storage platform has facilitated the preparation of deadly airstrikes and has shaped military operations in #Gaza and the #WestBank.

Thanks to the control it exerts over #Palestinian telecommunications infrastructure, #Israel has long intercepted phone calls in the occupied territories. But the indiscriminate new system allows intelligence officers to play back the content of cellular calls made by Palestinians, capturing the conversations of a much larger pool of ordinary civilians.

  19. I spent decades at Columbia. I’m withdrawing my fall course due to its deal with #Trump
    Rashid Khalidi

    from #TheGuardian #Guardian
    Fri 1 Aug 2025 06.00 EDT

Columbia’s capitulation has turned a #university that was once a site of free inquiry and learning into a shadow of its former self, an-anti university, a gated security zone with electronic entry controls, a place of fear and loathing, where faculty and students are told from on high what they can teach and say, under penalty of severe sanctions. Disgracefully, all of this is being done to cover up one of the greatest crimes of this century, the ongoing genocide in #Gaza, a crime in which #Columbia’s leadership is now fully complicit.

  20. Prominent historian cancels course at Columbia University over Trump deal

#RashidKhalidi, in open letter published by #Guardian, accuses university of ‘capitulating’ with $200m settlement

    from #TheGuardian
    Dani Anguiano
    Fri 1 Aug 2025 06.00 EDT

“Although I have retired, I was scheduled to teach a large lecture course on this topic in the fall as a “special lecturer” but I cannot do so under the conditions #Columbia has accepted by capitulating to the #Trump administration in June,” Khalidi wrote.

Columbia announced last week that it would pay more than $200m in a settlement with the federal government after the White House claimed the university failed to adequately address alleged antisemitism on campus amid protests over the #Israel-#Gaza war, and threatened to pull significant funding.

  21. Tiring how the #Guardian’s #Epping story is leading with a photo and headline of the anti-refugee EDL group over the far larger counter protest, who get a small photo 2/3rds down.

I’ve never been nervous on a march before. There was 700 or so of us but it was a long walk twice thru a town where lots of people have been turned against the hostel ‘for the kids’ and so think we’re somehow therefore ‘against the kids’. But just as many people seemed to wave and cheer, tho with visible apprehension.

"“As one of the largest companies in the world, Microsoft has immeasurable power to do the right thing: demand an end to this senseless tragedy, or we will cease our technological support for Israel,” read the email... “If leadership continues to ignore this demand, I promise that it won’t go unnoticed. 24. ‘He felt our pain’: Catholic church in Gaza grieves Pope Francis’s death

Pope made nightly phone calls to the Holy Family #Catholic church from the start of the war in October 2023

    from #TheGuardian #Guardian
Bethan McKernan in Jerusalem and Malak A Tantesh in Gaza
    Tue 22 Apr 2025 10.32 EDT

"The first time he spoke to #PopeFrancis during the pontiff’s nightly calls to the Holy Family Catholic church in #Gaza City, the congregant George Antone, 44, found himself at a loss for words.

It was October 2023, a few weeks after #Hamas ignited a devastating war in the Gaza Strip by attacking #Israel. The #Palestinian territory’s tiny Christian community had taken shelter in the strip’s three churches, but that didn’t mean they were safe. An #Israeli airstrike had just hit the Greek Orthodox church, killing 18 people; soon, snipers and bombs would also kill civilians at the Holy Family."
