  2. "Stop underestimating the future value of your current insight.” - Futurist Jim Carroll

Back in 1989, while I was in the midst of my career crisis that would ultimately see me leave the corporate world and start my own freelance "thing," I obsessed over thinking about what possible value my unique skills might be.

After all, I had gone far from my original professional accounting roots, and was deeply involved in all the merging technology, culturem and opportunities of what was then the emerging Internet. I wasn't on the leading edge - I was somewhere far out ahead of most other people in the world - my skills were so niche, so unique, so narrow that I couldn't think of what possible value they might be to any organization in the world.

Five years later, I had a **#1** national bestselling book, my business was thriving, and I had people begging me to come into their organizations to explain this strange new world - for money.

With all that, I learned a very powerful lesson: one of the hardest things to do in a long-term career is to accurately value what you know. It's still the case for me - when you’ve spent 36 years "putting in the work" (**#16**) and "frequenting the fringes" (**#15**), your intuition becomes so sharp that you often mistake it for common sense.

You assume everyone sees the world the way you do.
    They don't.

And that might be the most important skill you have - a theme I explore in depth in my upcoming Being Unique book. (It's still in editing!)

In my voyage, I’ve realized that the "Infinite Pivot" isn't just about moving to the next thing. It’s about recognizing the massive value of the distance you’ve already traveled. What takes me five minutes to "see" today took me three decades to learn. What I knew in 1994 that propelled my success forward took me from 1982 to learn.

So what's your value worth? The amateur prices by the hour. The expert prices by the decade.

    Own your expertise.

    Stop apologizing for your rate.

The value of your insight isn't measured by how long it takes you to say it, but by how much it changes the world for the person who hears it.

Futurist Jim Carroll now realizes that what he knew in 1989 was unbelievably invaluable at the time. It just took him a few years to recognize it.

  9. Success isn't reaching a destination; it’s mastering the art of the infinite pivot." - Futurist Jim Carroll

I walked out of the corporate world 36 years ago to bet on a home office, a fledgling new technology known as the Internet, and a belief that the future belongs to those who can change.

I’ve learned a lot along the way! Through those years, I’ve survived market crashes, massive technology revolutions, and the beautiful chaos of raising a family in the same rooms and homes where I wrote 44 books. All along the way, I’ve learned what it means to pivot — to change my career focus, reinvent my skills, adjust my personal outlook, rebalance my time commitments. Every single time, I was somehow pivoting, changing, and adapting.

I meant to share these lessons at Year 35 — I wrote a long post last year with some thoughts on what I’ve learned. I haven't shared it yet —I wanted to get the lessons right.

But the other day, I stumbled across it and realized I had powerful insight to share. Many people around the world are in the early years of the freelance economy; it might be useful. Given how quickly AI is evolving, there will probably be more.

With that in mind, I’ve distilled my journey into this new series: The Art of the Infinite Pivot.

I’ve come to realize that the delay was actually part of the journey. In a world obsessed with “instant” and “real-time,” I’ve learned that the best insights are the ones that have been lived, tested, and breathed for decades.

Over the next few months, I’m going to share them one by one — not as a “guru,” but as someone who has spent 36 years in the trenches of the home office and global freelance economy. Whether you are a solo-entrepreneur, a corporate leader considering t a pivot, or someone just trying to build a new future, I hope these lessons help you navigate your own voyage.

Lesson **#1** drops tomorrow. The series will be found here and at pivot.jimcarroll.com.

    Who’s coming along?

NASA Goddard A new NASA study suggests that solar activity will remain high or rise further in the coming decades, contradicting previous assumptions that the sun was quieting down and scientists "don't completely understand" why. NASA scientists are warning that the sun may be "waking up" from a brief period of relative inactivity, contradicting past assumptions about our home star. 20. For #decades #electricity #meters just worked. #Power usage either wasn't an issue because it was affordable or you had no trouble working it out. The #electricitymeters rarely needed replacement. Now I concede that as we now have so many #HMOs #smartmeters may be useful for some & emailing a number too onerous for others. But unlike the previous methods these 'smart' ones need paying for, updating, replacing & acceptance that your #data 'may' be shared.

  23. #Fukushima #Nuclear Power Plant starts 3rd round of #wastewater release, potentially impacting #seafood quality in U.S.

    By Belle Lewis - November 14, 2023

"The #FukushimaDachii nuclear plant started its third release of nuclear wastewater on Nov. 2 as scientists warn that seafood products from the #PacificOcean could be #contaminated

"Although the International Atomic Energy Agency approved the 30-year water release plan, scientists and civilians in nations bordering the Pacific Ocean have questioned the safety of the plan, especially as it relates to seafood.

"In a press release approving of the plan, the IAEA stated, 'the discharges of the treated water would have a negligible radiological impact to people and the environment.'

"#PaulDorfman, member of the Irish Government Environmental Protection Agency Radiation Protection Advisory Committee and chair of Nuclear Consulting Group, explained that some scientists have questioned IAEA’s approval of the water release.

"'I and others are concerned by IAEA’s attitude,' Dorfman said. 'Normally even low levels of radioactive pollution will find its way into local seafood, one way or another.'

"In 2020, #Japan exported 332,926 kilograms of frozen scallops to the U.S. Japan exports many fish products to the U.S.

"Samantha Valeriano, a psychology student from Hawaii, said she eats seafood about once a week. She does not often think about where her food comes from but wants to be more cautious following the nuclear water release.

"'I think I would be a little more cautious of what I ate, checking labels a little bit more,' Valeriano said. 'I would be conscious of what I ate and where it came from.'

"As the People’s Republic of #China has imposed bans of Japanese fish exports, the #USA has supported the Japanese market by increasing fish purchases.

"In a press release, the #UnitedStates Embassy and Consulate in Japan explained that military bases in Japan will carry Japanese seafood as a way to buoy up seafood markets and undermine the PRC’s ban.

"'United States elected representatives and senior government officials have stood in solidarity with Japan during this baseless ban,' the statement said. 'Another step to help provide additional sales to counter the ban was to start selling Japanese seafood at the U.S. military facilities in Japan, both through the commissaries and mess halls.'

"According to the statement, government officials like former speaker #KevinMcCarthy ate seafood from Japan as a testament to Japan’s safety standards.
However, other U.S. agencies, like the National Association of #MarineLaboratories question whether accurate research was conducted by the IAEA and Japanese Government to determine safety of seafood products.

"They explain that the lack of data on potential health impacts is a cause for serious concern.

"'Many of the #radionuclides contained in the #accumulated waste cooling water have half-lives ranging from #decades to #centuries, and their deleterious effects range from #DNADamage and #cellular stress to elevated #cancer risks in people who eat affected marine organisms, such as #clams, #oysters, #crabs, #lobster, #shrimp and fish,' the statement reads. [Not to mention all the critters that feed off them! Bioaccumulation works up the food chain!]

"Eve Nagareda, medical laboratory science major from Hawaii, shared she wants to avoid seafood from dumping grounds even if levels are considered safe.

"'I think I would try to go as far as possible from it,' Nagareda said.

"Kylee Wasano, pre-communications disorders student from Oahu, agreed. She explained she feels that she might already be consuming contaminated seafood.

"'I feel like I already am eating that, and I just don’t know,' Wasano said. 'Anything that could expose you to (radiation) you should be considerate about.'

"As organizations weigh safety concerns, scientists turn to the water release process to determine potential effects."
