  5. Test flight using Quantum Sensor based navigation = success!

"MagNav" employs quantum sensors to detect variations in Earth’s natural magnetic field and create a "map" that aircraft can use to determine their position without depending on satellite or GPS signals.

The test = an Embraer 170 flew for 4 hours and 23 minutes over the Pacific Ocean, from Seattle to southern Alaska and back. The system improved position accuracy by 89% compared with conventional backup navigation systems. interestingengineering.com/mil

  14. 🐭🧊 Oh, the wonders of "glacier mice"! Because apparently, what the world really needed was an impenetrable wall of "please set a useragent" and "respect our robot policy" instead of actual information. 🤖📜 Good luck navigating that maze, adventurer! 🙄🔍

  15. Dear #cycling / #bikepacking community, who can help with a major #navigation problem? I want to get rid of #komoot and use #wanderer instead (#diday ). Unfortunately there are huge differences in altitude calculation. 310 m of ascent on komoot, 98 m on wanderer.to, 235 m on gpx.studio. Which one is most likely right? So far I trusted komoot and corrected the data on wanderer manually. But as I want to use #opensource infrastructure, that can’t be a permanent solution. Any ideas/recommendations?

  16. #Navi #GNSS software update - in the end I stuck with #TomTom Go (the paid one), although I did like #OsmAnd and had the paid version its way slower to pick up your vehicle speed from GNSS than TomTom and lacks real time #trafficinfo - whilst #OrganicMaps and #CoMaps still seem to be arguing about how to implement speed display on #AndroidAuto

#TomTom app behaves pretty much exactly like my old standalone navi, its a familiar, usable #UI and has accurate real time speed display plus 3 warning beeps the moment you go over the limit (which is often main reason I want this software, especially in familiar areas where I can navigate without the GNSS (as I grew up having to do this when younger!)

  17. 👀 Oh joy, another "lightweight" #open-source tool that's anything but! Rejourney promises to plug revenue leaks, but the real miracle would be making GitHub's menu #navigation less convoluted. 🤦‍♂️ Maybe next, they'll sell us an app that predicts when our eyes will glaze over from reading yet another buzzword-laden pitch. 🚀

  18. “Swinburne University #Professor #AllisonKealy, an expert in #positioning, #navigation and #timing, told the ABC she had raised this exact scenario when she approached Telstra earlier this year while seeking support for a proposed critical #infrastructure #resilience #research centre.

Professor Kealy said the pitch to #telcos and other critical infrastructure operators was that they needed to identify shared points of failure before an outage exposed them.”

  19. 🚀✨"Thrill" as you wander aimlessly through the #labyrinthine corridors of Kottke.org, the site that's been 'beloved' by a whopping 86.47 people since 1998. The real mystery? How it still exists, defying the basic principles of #navigation and coherence. 🙃🧭

  21. "There’s More To Global Positioning Than Just GPS" by @hackaday - US GPS🛰️ started it but isn't the only public global navigation system now. Initially planned for military use, GPS was first to open to public use (after KAL Flight 007✈️ was shot down in 1983) and then others followed. Sophisticated multi-network receivers now improve #Positioning #Navigation #Timing #PNT resolution by combining data from all satellites in view. hackaday.com/2026/05/07/theres #GNSS #GPS #Galileo #Glonass #Beidou #space

  22. "The GPS III Rollout Is Almost Complete, But What Is It?" by @hackaday / @tomnardi - New 3rd generation of #GPS satellites transmit with higher power and use new protocols to improve signal acquisition and resist interference. It's backward compatible with older GPS receivers (i.e. phones, cars, aircraft) but much improved for new receivers designed for GPS III. hackaday.com/2026/04/28/the-gp #GNSS #positioning #navigation #timing #PNT #satellite #space

Natürlich mit dem Ziel, dass die schlechten Rezensionen wieder von Plattformen wie #GoogleMaps verschwinden. Google Maps zeigt daher ab sofort an, wie viele Bewertungen gelöscht wurden.

  24. "Laser Ranging Makes GPS Satellites More Accurate" by @hackaday - Laser retroreflector on newest #GPS satellite is the first of what will be on all upcoming GPS satellites. Similar reflectors left on the Moon by Apollo astronauts allow scientists to measure distance to the Moon to the millimeter. Same use for GPS satellites will reduce error in their estimated trajectory, and improve #positioning, #navigation & #timing #PNT derived from them. hackaday.com/2026/03/29/laser- #GNSS #satellite #space

  25. @marlinz #Informationretrieval is depending on the current task and situation.

Sometimes #navigation is the most efficient one, sometimes it's #search. (my #TagTrees are a combination of both) And then there is teleporting, bookmarks/favorites, ...

Unfortunately, most people don't have the knowledge and experience to use multiple methods and decide which method to choose in a specific situation. 😞
