  5. Ollie (Block Theme): Untermenüs per Hover statt Klick aktivieren

  11. Test flight using Quantum Sensor based navigation = success!

"MagNav" employs quantum sensors to detect variations in Earth’s natural magnetic field and create a "map" that aircraft can use to determine their position without depending on satellite or GPS signals.

The test = an Embraer 170 flew for 4 hours and 23 minutes over the Pacific Ocean, from Seattle to southern Alaska and back. The system improved position accuracy by 89% compared with conventional backup navigation systems. interestingengineering.com/mil #AirFlight #AirNavigation #AirCraft #Quantum #QuantumSensors #MagneticSensor #EarthMagnetism #Navigation #MagNav #GPS #Satellite #DoD

  17. Dear #cycling / #bikepacking community, who can help with a major #navigation problem? I want to get rid of #komoot and use #wanderer instead (#diday ). Unfortunately there are huge differences in altitude calculation. 310 m of ascent on komoot, 98 m on wanderer.to, 235 m on gpx.studio. Which one is most likely right? So far I trusted komoot and corrected the data on wanderer manually. But as I want to use #opensource infrastructure, that can’t be a permanent solution. Any ideas/recommendations?

“Taxi and ambulance drivers are less likely than workers in almost any other job to die of Alzheimer’s disease. That was the surprising result of a 2024 study examining the death certificates of nearly 9 million people in the U.S…
Of the 9 million death certificates from January 2020 to December 2022 that researchers examined, taxi and ambulance drivers had the lowest risk of dying from Alzheimer’s disease out of 443 occupations. After adjusting for age, sex, race, ethnicity and education, roughly 1 in 100 taxi and ambulance drivers died of Alzheimer’s, compared with 1 in 60 people overall.
This pattern did not extend to other driving jobs. The researchers concluded that the key to reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s was not driving itself but continuous real-time navigation: the constant work of locating yourself in space, tracking a destination and updating a mental map as conditions change. Drivers whose jobs relied on fixed or predetermined routes, like bus drivers and aircraft pilots, didn’t seem to experience a similar advantage.
Researchers believe the association between navigation-heavy work and lower Alzheimer’s risk centers on the hippocampus, a part of the brain that governs memory and spatial navigation. It’s one of the first brain regions that Alzheimer’s damages: Problems with spatial navigation and orientation are among the earliest signs of the disease, sometimes surfacing before obvious memory loss.
In one landmark 2000 study [link above], neuroscientists compared the brains of licensed London taxi drivers with those of people who did not drive cabs. Their findings provided the first evidence via structural imaging that regions of the adult brain can measurably change under sustained navigational demand. To earn a license, London cabbies must memorize more than 25,000 streets within a 6-mile radius of Charing Cross, a challenge known as “The Knowledge” that takes three to four years…”

  21. FREE Virtual Webinar - Map Intelligence – Map Reading and Interpretation for Informed Citizens
    Monday, August 10 • 12 PM - 1:15 PM MDT US

    H/T @GregoryBabinski
“Whether you're a curious beginner or just want to sharpen your spatial smarts, this session is perfect for becoming a more informed citizen. Dive into the world of maps and learn tips and tricks to navigate and understand any map like a pro. Don't miss out on this fun, interactive online experience!
Maps are a form of language that needs to be learned to be understood.
Everyone says ‘oh, I have GPS in my car or on my phone…’ But GPS is really just a mathematical monkey trick to send your approximate location from satellites to display on a map of the world. Without the map, GPS has limited value.
Maps, as much as any form of media, contain a wealth of data, information, and knowledge about the world that we inhabit. But to decode that information, we need map intelligence.
Map intelligence is the ability of a map user to decode the information about the world that the map maker (cartographer) is trying to convey to us.
Why is this important? We encounter maps almost every day. From the ubiquitous daily weather map of our region, to maps we find in our history or current affairs books, maps that tell us where to vote and who we can vote for, maps presented by developers, or policy advocates to our elected officials, maps are important for our lives. Studies show that 50% of all local government employees use maps in some form for their work.
This free, 75-minute online workshop introduces the basic knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to interpret the maps that you encounter in your life.’’

Neither are really particularly good unfortunately. However, I think the rise of films like these are due to GPS navigation dependence and the lack of general map skills. #compass #osm #navigation #Ordnancesurvey

  31. Weekly output: Google’s live lane guidance, Candela’s battery-electric hydrofoils

LISBON–I traveled here to speak at my ninth Web Summit conference in Europe via another EU city that I’m quite fond of, Barcelona. The Mozilla Foundation had the good taste to host its Mozilla Festival there and then provide me with a travel stipend to cover the event, so of course I was willing to start my Web Summit trip a few days early. Even though that left me little time at home between working a 15-hour day Tuesday as an election officer and then heading to Dulles Airport Wednesday afternoon.

11/4/2025: Safe to Go? Google Maps Adds ‘Live Lane Guidance’ for Polestar 4 EVs, PCMag

PCMag had two stories under my byline this week, and this was the one I actually wrote this week to cover an update to the built-in Google navigation in one of Polestar’s battery-electric vehicles. The other involved my editor updating a post I wrote in May about President Trump withdrawing his nomination of private astronaut and payments billionaire Jared Isaacman as NASA administrator, the new plot twist being that Trump had changed his mind again and had re-nominated Isaacman. I realize how confusing that last sentence can look.

11/7/2025: This battery-electric hydrofoil could supercharge a ferry transformation, Fast Company

Two years after getting an introduction to the Swedish startup Candela’s battery-electric hydrofoil sport boats on the San Francisco Bay, I enjoyed an update of the experience on waters I know much better–the Potomac and the Anacostia. With a longer word count than I had for that PCMag report in the summer of 2023, I went into much more detail about Candela’s ambitions to get into the passenger-ferry business, its likely competition in that market, and potential obstacles to electrifying ferries.

  32. #AfricanUnion Joins Calls To End Use Of #Mercator Map That Shrinks Continent’s Size

[just a reminder that the Mercator projection was developed in 1569 for use in marine navigation, so as to utilise “rhumb line[s],… a path on the Earth's surface that crosses all meridians of longitude at the same constant angle, allowing for a steady compass bearing to be followed.” (this is most specifically NOT pedantry!)
Glad that the suggested projection to make – rightly – the size of Africa be accurately represented is Equal Earth (equal-earth.com/, 4th figure) - rather than the (1) gross shapes distortion and (2) (erroneous) ‘socially concerned groups’ baggage that has been attached to the Gall-Peters projection]
