Thing is, this has been a #Republican #Trope about #ForestFires for #Decades -- directed particularly at #Callifornia
If only California would keep their forests cleared of fallen branches and loose leaves and generally looking like a golf course, there'd be no forest fires
It's just that simply, really

"[I]t wasn’t until reading #YairMintzker’s new #book, I, Wandering #Jew, that I came to appreciate another dimension of its significance, namely, its evocation of the figure of the #WanderingJew.
Originally, the Wandering Jew was an #antisemitic #trope #Christians used to explain the marginality and foreignness of #Jews in #European society. A cobbler stood at the doorstep of his #Jerusalem shop, according to the story, as Jesus labored by, hauling his burden to his death. Refusing his request for help, Jesus cursed the cobbler, who inexplicably came to be known as Ahasverus, the name of a Persian king, to live eternally in exile until the Second Coming. The Jews were thus condemned to a de-territorialized, homeless fate as Christ deniers."

A quotation from Terry Pratchett
In the jungles of central Klatch there are, indeed, lost kingdoms of mysterious Amazonian princesses who capture male explorers for specifically masculine duties. These are indeed rigorous and exhausting and the luckless victims do not last long.*
* This is because wiring plugs, putting up shelves, sorting out the funny noises in attics, and mowing lawns can eventually reduce even the strongest constitution.Terry Pratchett (1948-2015) English author

Random sci-fi idea. Public domain, feel free to use.
The Thing, but it's invading a radiotelescope astronomy station. The "tell" is that the superorganism cells communicate by some kind of wifi while they are assimilating (once they finish doing their thing, they can "close up" the signal and communicate internally so they stop leaking radio).
The survivors trace back assimilation instances by going over their radio logs and realizing the unexplained "WOW" signals they've been exploring / trying to filter were instances of their colleagues being taken over.
(Bonus points if the particular radio leakage also sounds like that interference you can get on badly-grounded heaphones with a cord just the right length when someone's cellphone picks up a phone call. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPYyrS7fc7g)

#PennedPossibilities 780 — Do you have any favorite tropes (not clichés) that you enjoy writing?
I'm not altogether sure what a #trope is.
Dictionaries define it as a figure of speech, the use of words in a non-literal sense. But people (myself included) have tended to use it to mean something like a theme or motif. Perhaps it is something writers need more clarity on

Alright, I have a question about a trope I have come across now twice in book descriptions and I have absolutely no idea what it is supposed to mean:
"Who did this to you?"What's the subtext here?
"Tell me who it was so I can punish them?"
Or is it more general: "Who would ever do such a thing to a person?"
Or does it means something else? -

A quotation from Ben Aaronovitch
The original single-bulb light fittings had been ripped out and their cables rerouted to power a single line of fluorescent tubes. In accordance with the iron law of creepy ambience, every third or fourth tube was either out or flickering fitfully.

It seems to be a common family #trope that parents have (or may appear to have) favourites amongst their children.
It seems to work in reverse.
My 7 year old great nephew has let it be known that although he loves his dad, he likes his mum better. -
What's the deal with hiding the McGuffin information in the lost Library of Doom, beyond the Temple of Death, and leaving obscure clues to find it, only in Times of Great Need?
If it's instructions to activate the planet-saving thingy, or to destroy the elder evil god, publish that shit everywhere. Make songs and copies and festivals so it's never forgotten.
If it's bad stuff that ends the world, why save it at all?
You want it found and known, or you don't.

#WritersCoffeeClub Ch 16 Nbr 13 — What’s your favourite trope? Do you lean into it for your work or shy away?
I've little interest in tropes, which I see as cliched bits of plot found frequently enough that a critic (read: not an author) decided could be well summarized in a few words. In my opinion, every plot has been written before, as has every character archetype.
As authors, we should feel no shame, no angst, no fear borrowing ideas wherever we find them. We need combine our discovered treasures with whatever message and character moves us, and write. The self-harm of measuring against tropes, other authors, or critics needs be discarded for what it is: procrastination and insecurity. It stifles us from writing, it prevents us from realizing our characters' dreams when that's what we truly desire.

The disheveled teacher greedily hunting money for their school seem to be a C-drama trope. Frankly, I prefer that one over the schlaraffenland-adjacent British boarding school trope. Few of us went to Eton, many of us have attended worn down schools coldshouldered by financiers.

Bionic Sue & Eldritch Sue got to know one another on their first posting together. Gingerly. -
Does anyone know if there is an official name for the character #trope which can approximately be described as "Mary Sue as a form of horror"? Meaning, a character has an unrealistically ideal set of skills/qualities in the style of a Mary Sue or Gary Stu, but this is actually intentional (though that may not be immediately apparent to the audience) and indicates that something wrong/unnatural happened to the character to give them these qualities. #writing
