  1. 2025 in Music

According to Soundcloud I spent most of my time listening to various shows on Afropop Worldwide, Rinse FM and Sleep’s Dopesmoker. All of which made on appearance on previous years lists. The new addition for 2025 was Jay Electronica’s A Written Testimony” EP trilogy (?). Compared to last year, my Soundcloud list is about the same, while a quick review of my history/timeline for a few other platforms indicates I’ve still been repping lots of Bad Bunny, KEXP, LaRussell, Tiny Desk and Western AF. What is perhaps most interesting about that is that 90% of my Soundcloud time is logged from my work-station and given how/when I listen, each platform has a distinct vibe/represents a particular set of activities and their corresponding soundtrack. So John Carroll Kirby was still a top artist (Tuscany serving as a regular soundtrack for family dinners) and I listened to about the same amount of Alice Coltrane (mostly while keeping up my yoga practice) and Keith Hudson (while hanging outside/working in the yard).

Some new favorites were Eladio Carrion, Hugh Mundell, LA LOM and as already mentioned I played this track repeatedly. One new trend was a return to alt and 90s rock (Beastie Boys, Fugazi, Nirvana et al.), mostly as a result of trying to find music all three of us (my son, wife and I) can agree on. Especially, when in the car together.

In terms of concerts, Bitchin Baja’s and Prairiewolf at glob were a blast and included a bonus hang-night with a buddy visiting from West Cost. While the first night of Denver Metal & Beer Fest with my BIL was fun and the surprise for me was OKC based Chat Pile. Plus, he and I caught a couple of great sets at the 2025 Bluegrass on the Arkansas (in Salida, CO), including night one’s closer, Magoo.

While I listen primarily to digital-streaming, I did make an effort to dig into my vinyl collection more. Especially, in the second half of the year. There were a handful of records added to the collection this year, with the best being World Psychedelic Classics 4: Nobody Can Live Forever – The Existential Soul of Tim Maia and 400% Dynamite Ska, Soul, Rocksteady, Funk and Dub in Jamaica, both gifted by friends. The former has been on heavy rotation for at least last few years so I was pumped to unexpectedly get my own copy and while I wasn’t aware of the later, it is chock full of classics! In terms of my own finds, I thrifted a copy of Stealing Fire by Bruce Cockburn along with 1 or 2 LPs from Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson.

Otherwise, I still use an old dedicated MP3 music player for running and it’s library hasn’t been updated in some years. It a weird mix of early/mid aughts London bass and grime mixes, DatPiff downloads and stuff like Pink by Boris. I probably listen to this from Elijah & Skilliam (ft JME and Skepta) the most. For me it’s perfect running energy/vibes!

Finally, this Butthole Surfers mix has become a regular evening (usually to kickoff or end the weekend) listen and I unwind from many a weekday, with NTS Radio. In particular the Raja Vibrations show.

I really dug that Night Slugs with Scotti Dee & Spidey G setBad Bunny tracks made 3 of my top 5 on AmazonFor a total of 152 hours but that’s just the one platform

  3. Had my first decent Goodwill haul this year with an offering plate for Lucifer, plug tower, MagSafe 2 charger, and a Logitech M570 with the dongle!

I also popped up at Value Village (big surprise, right?) and came out with a new cover for my gifted Kindle Oasis, an Amazon Echo Glow, and a dual-wielding monitor arm!

All in all I'm really pleased with my finds, maybe I'll post pictures later.

  4. How a thrifting tycoon took over Goodwill in the Bay Area from an Arizona throne ("The Bay Area stores’ merger into the Arizona-Maryland operation formed the largest Goodwill organization in the world.")

My wife and others, including the person quoted in the article, have been aware of the declining quality of Goodwill items in the Bay Area for a while, and a worker confirmed to her last year that the whole operation had been bought by Arizona.

    Now the news is out.

The strategy is to take the most valuable items and sell them online, then convince you to pay $6 dollars for something second hand that cost $3 dollars new from Shein (which is made of 100% Polyester btw, which is textile-speak for "plastic").

If you want something good, don't go to "Good"will.

  7. Misotheist – De Pinte Review By Grin Reaper

Ever shrouded in mystery, the enigmatic collective Misotheist emerges from their icy realm to deliver succor to fans of metals black and arcane. De Pinte, the band’s fourth release, roughly translates from Norwegian to ‘The Tormented’ or ‘They Tormented,’1 a fitting appellation given the Trondheim troupe’s fondness for tortured topics and twisted themes.2 At their core, Misotheist takes the oppressive atmosphere of Selbst and merges it with Mayhem’s pummeling impudence, then strategically adorns that union with subtle melodies and naked emotions that remind me of Decline of the I. Mostly, though, Misotheist sounds like Misotheist, and given Doom_et_al’s brazen glazin’ of their last couple albums, that’s not a bad path to walk. Right?

As with prior albums, Misotheist continues exploring the band’s sonic landscape within the context they’ve defined for themselves. Second-wave tempests reign supreme, broken up by leaden crawls and punctuated with antagonistic bouts of dissonance and harmony. Fans of the band won’t be surprised at De Pinte’s mix, once again donning the lo-fi trappings Misotheist is known for and imbuing the songs with buzz and crunch. With four tracks on De Pinte compared to the typical three, Misotheist manages their most accessible album to date by keeping the opening trio trim (for them, anyway) and comprising a tightly written side A. Overall, the refinement on De Pinte signals a keen band that understands the path to greater success is one of degrees.

The first three tracks on De Pinte may be Misotheist’s best material yet, spewing counterbalanced discord and melody over varied paces in concise doses. The guitar twangs in “Unanswered Thrice” drop a wistful anchor of melancholy that tugs at the heartstrings over furious riffing and a bludgeoning drum performance, and “Blinded and Revealed” rumbles at an unhinged gait similar to Panzerfaust, injecting spidery leads over the blackened tumult beneath. It’s “Kjetterdom,” though, that stands out amongst on the A-side of the album, decelerating the momentum to an agonizing plod while the bass plays a pivotal melodic role that offsets serpentine guitar jangles. Throughout, the vocals cut and gut with what sounds like broken glass being ground in the back of someone’s throat, engendering an uncomfortable brutality that works seamlessly with the music. In all, the front half of De Pinte is loaded with great moments and potent songwriting, setting the stage for Misotheist’s longest song to date.

Though the heights of De Pinte surpass its predecessors, Misotheist hits a snag during the album’s last leg. The key to De Pinte comes down to tension, and where the front of the album excels here, “De Pinte” doesn’t quite stick the landing. Swirling, hypnotic trems play over rigidly metered bass drum blasts, and odd cymbal splashes jar proceedings out of orbit and into an exciting, dangerous crash course. The musical dynamics expertly weave to and fro, adventurously shifting the song’s velocity over a twenty-minute run that always shocks me with how fast it slips by. Misotheist’s dedication to atmosphere and tension throughout “De Pinte” is magnificent, and it’s baffling when so much time gets spent forging tension to have De Pinte just… end. There’s no big release. No catharsis. It might have been easier to look past if Misotheist hadn’t committed the same sin at the end of Vessels by Which the Devil Is Made Flesh, too. Despite how great the rest of the album is, the lack of fulfillment leaves me hollow, and the impact is outsized since this is a listener’s final impression.

Make no mistake, Misotheist brings the goods with De Pinte, and any fan of metal should find plenty to like on it. Though I’m disappointed with the lack of a fulfilling climax, I regularly find myself looking for forty minutes to sneak in another listen. Unquestionably great moments permeate the album, and while I’m disappointed with its final, crucial juncture, Misotheist’s latest is a must-listen in a month flush with quality releases. Don’t miss it, or the choice could come back to torment you.

  8. I sometimes go to absurd and pointless effort making or modifying props for my "Minions at Work" action Figure photo comics. I enjoy it, and especially now (how about this failed timeline, huh?), I find it to be an anxiety reliever and mood booster.
I found this weird but interesting fashion doll sink (Maybe from the "Monster High" line? Just a guess...) in a thrift store. Originally the stand was black and the sink itself a dark pink. I gave the stand a weathered antique gold finish with acrylic paints, and tried to give the sink more of a natural sea-shell look. The drain was painted with metallic chrome and black brush markers (my first time using the, VERY nice!) and I also used the chrome marker to detail the faucet and valve handles.
Now it will go with the collection of set items for the evil steampunk submarine Naughtyless, belonging to supervillain Captain Rehab. Unlikely it will ever appear as more than a background piece, but maybe I'll think of something more prominent to do with it.

  17. Engineering challenges of the completed QRP EFHW coupler

Kudos to Kits and Parts, the United States Postal Service and the Canada Post dog sled teams who fearlessly fought their way through blizzards on the frozen barren tundra into the wild white yonder to safely deliver my package of toroid cores. But, as soon as I had unpacked the goodies I realized I may have fired off the order with excessive haste. I ordered some medium sized Type 2 and Type 6 powdered iron toroids for my occasional QROp (20 watts) projects and some smaller ones for QRP. How small? Too small! In my haste I had ordered 25 T37-2 and 25 T37-6 cores. These cores are so small that winding inductors on them requires a great deal and patience and dexterity – I have neither.

When life hands you lemons …

When life hands me self-inflicted lemons I tend to fill my head with expletives that are best not spoken in polite company. Then I find ways to cover up my mistakes. T37 cores are really only suitable in the stages of a transceiver prior to the final PA. Could they possibly be persuaded to handle the full 4.5 watts output of my revered antique Yaesu FT-817?

I reminded myself that this is Ham Radio Outside the Box and in that spirit I would find a way to use those lilliputian cores in my project. There were two screaming demons haunting my thoughts on this. A toroidal core can overheat due to being too small to handle the power applied to it. Or it can simply reach magnetic saturation causing it to fail to perform as expected.

I remembered an old trick used by hams who enjoy pumping out so much power they risk blowing holes in the ionosphere. They use multiple stacked toroid cores to share the load. Would that work with the tiny cores I had at my disposal? I decided to take the risk, but first test the idea on the bench before venturing out into the Big Blue Sky Shack.

But how to test the idea?

If a core can’t handle the power applied to it it will get hot. If the core reaches magnetic saturation it will no longer function as expected. I figured a simple way to test for these conditions on the bench would be a keydown test into a 2.5Kohm dummy load. I used two stacked T37-6 cores, held together with electrical tape and then by the wire wound through them. The setup was almost identical to the “20 minute” version published in the previous post, except that the inductor was now the toroidal core version.

The tuned circuit, dummy load and transceiver were hooked up on the bench and then, with very little trepidation (if I blew up the inductor I had more wire, more cores), I keyed up the full four and a half watts from the transceiver for 30 seconds while monitoring the SWR on my Norcal QRP power meter. Did it survive the test?

The Norcal QRP power meter indicated a rock steady SWR throughout the test. The cores may have increased in temperature but not enough to be detectable when touched with my fingers at the end of the keydown. Not a scientifically rigorous test but it inspired confidence in the viability of the solution. Stacking two cores increases the depth through which the wires pass through the core and that may compensate for the smaller diameter.

And now – that pesky polyvaricon

The 3D printing revolution hasn’t yet penetrated the basement laboratories of Ham Radio Outside the Box. Instead I am limited to good old-fashioned engineering techniques in my build projects. It is amazing what can be achieved with an extensive collection of materials and a few simple tools. That is exactly how I approached the challenge of attaching a regular quarter-inch knob to the stubby, irregular shaft of a polyvaricon.

The basic idea has already been covered on this blog but it has now been refined into a reproducible technique that is rugged and reliable enough to survive the rigors of being bumped over the steep and rocky terrain encountered along the north end of the Niagara Escarpment. The solution to the challenge is to construct a short quarter-inch diameter adapter shaft than can be securely attached to the polyvaricon. The basic material used is a steel drinking straw. Now that plastic straws have been declared a deadly hazard to the survival of the human race, steel straws are becoming quite easy to find.

Two tools were required; a Dremel for cutting a slot in one end of a section of the straw, and a small tube cutter for cutting the adapter shaft to the correct length. The adapter shaft is secured to the polyvaricon by means of a long, fine bolt and a small washer. Scavenging polyvaricons from dirt cheap thrift store AM/FM radios ensures the correct size of bolt is obtained. I did have to grind down the washer a little when the adapter shaft was fitted to ensure it slid into the knob nicely. Building the adapter shaft took about a half hour of delicate work while wearing a magnifying lens to enhance my degenerating vision. I imagine making something similar with a 3D printer would take as long.

I have another project developing on the workbench which involves the same inductor core tricks and polyvaricon mods as outlined here. It is a wideband L-match and if it works I’ll publish the details here in a couple of weeks. On the other hand, if it doesn’t work …
