my favorite dice of all time is the Betrayal at House on the Hill dice which i've nicknamed the d?3 ("nullable dee three") because their sides are numbered 0,0,1,1,2,2.

they have a very nice property: when rolling N-many dice, the expected value is exactly N. so, for instance, rolling 5d?3 gives a range from 0-10, average 5, with a nice binomial distribution of randomness.

more dice should have zeroes on them. i would love to see a game built around d?6's. or, hell, the most common d10 design is technically a d?10. use it!

swapping out the dice in my dice bag from "equal proportions" to this lopsided arrangement: 24 white, 18 black, 12 red, 6 yellow, 6 green, 6 blue

why? because of poker

if I assign the values 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, then each of these rows equals 100 chips, and the smaller values are repeated enough times that it should be possible to make change.

in practice, the dice in my kit mostly get used as true/false markers for zendo but if I need more than 18 total "false" koans then the table is probably full. so this should be fine.

Believe it or not, the device manufacturer's suggestion for manually adding randomness was rolling lots and lots of #dice. Apparently, not enough people followed that advice, and now their digital funny money is all gone.
