By the way, here's the physical harddisk drive, I am using within my virtual 86Box DeskPro 386/25 configuration. It's an old CONNER CFS420A from 1993 and its geometry closely matches Compaq's fixed disk "type 38", even though this one only uses 315mb of space.

With the latest 86Box beta version v6, I just took some time to re-create one of my favourite Compaq DeskPro 386/25 systems from the early 90s. This computer didn't have an integrated BIOS setup in its ROM, so I needed to use the appropriate configuration diskette. I'm installing IBM's PC DOS 5.02 as an operating system. This is perfect for running all these early DOS VGA games, like the original "Wing Commander".

Thanks to a recent upload to the Internet Archive from "LazArchive", I could finally put together a set of compatible MS-DOS 3.31 floppy disks. The COMPAQ FASTART utility disk from 1989 finally works as intended using the COMPAQ User Programs v6.01 Rev B. This never worked for me before, so it's a huge improvement! 😃

MS-DOS v3.31 is a particularly useful version of DOS, because it was the first version to support a partition size of over 32MB... up to 512MB!

While having the keyboard removed for some light cleaning, I thought why not upgrade the RAM. It now has 128 MB - which means I can disable the swap file in Windows 95 to prolong the life of the SSD. 🙂

This little #Compaq #Armada 1500c just got a 4 GB PATA SSD (yes, a real SSD) and will be a perfect DOS/Win9x machine.

Setting up a virtual Compaq Deskpro 386/25 using yesterday's boot diskette and the latest 86Box. I added a 25MHz 386 CPU, a 387 co-processor, 4megs of RAM, VGA graphics as well as 315MB of disk space.

So far, everything works. This is fun! 😃

Earlier tonight, I was searching the web for the official Compaq diagnostics disk to add a Compaq Deskpro 386/25 to my collection of 86Box virtual machines. This machine's from the late 80s and it does not have anything like a BIOS settings menu, but instead uses a bootable floppy disk instead.

Great success! I did not only find working disk images, but I even managed to download the original files from Compaq to create these disks in the first place. In both 3.5" and 5.25" versions! The files are named "SP0308.EXE" and "SP0316.EXE".

I'm reallly grateful to the community for preserving these files! 😃

Hier noch ein weiteres, eher spezielles Retro-Sammlerstück, diesmal aus dem Jahre 1992: Ein OEM Diskettensatz von Windows 3.1 mit Dienstprogrammen und Branding des PC-Herstellers COMPAQ.

Eine Installation dieser Disketten ist - sofern man keine Fehlermeldung auslösen möchte - nur auf Computern mit COMPAQ BIOS möglich. Ansonsten wird beim ersten Start ein "Segment-Lade-Fehler" durch das Programm CPQINST.EXE ausgelöst. Um dies zu vermeiden, genügt allerdings auch schon ein emuliertes COMPAQ System, wie z.B. der "Compaq Deskpro 386" in 86Box.

Au début des années 1990, la mobilité signifiait transporter un ordinateur de près de 8 kg, doté d’un processeur 486 et d’une architecture proche d’un PC de bureau.

My kingdom for a #Compaq #Prolinea NET 1/25s or 1/33s. I own a Presario 425, it was my first computer and what started my tech career. I shipped it to Portugal late last year but TSA destroyed the case. I'd like to find another, even a dead one to steal the case, but if I found the Prolinea variant it would be better since it includes an integrated NIC and there are only 2 ISA slots making that very valuable.

Any leads?

In today's #retrocomputing adventure, I learned:

- Only the first PCI slot in my #COMPAQ #Presario 5184 exposes its option ROM, sometimes. At least for the NIC.

- Compiling #XTIDE will work in Linux if you get rid of the .exe extensions and replace del with rm, but you also have to remember to replace all the backslashes with slashes or the checksum perl script won't run and you'll get a 101-I/O ROM Error!

My first PDA was the first-generation Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC.

I had the Ericsson T39m as a phone, which was the first mobile phone with built-in GPRS and Bluetooth.

Had mobile web always at hand even in middle school, and Pocket PC port of SimCity 2000!
