  3. i have medium support needs or something. idk how to describe it.

i want to have my own place, but have ended up hospitalized both times i tried.

so supportive housing (not a group home tho) would be a good step i think. even if i have to prove i'm ready for it at a more supported level. as long as it isn't an institution.

but i need a #medicaid waiver. and they talk is all directed at parents. not directly to the client. i am doing this by myself.

  4. Every Saturday, Katherine and her mother, Frances, share a cherished routine: thrifting, browsing the hardware store and working side by side on their intricate miniature-house projects. From England to Hong Kong to Calgary, and finally to Whitehorse, Yukon, they’ve built a full and joyful life together defying the lifelong doubts others cast on what a child with an #IntellectualDisability can achieve.

Directed by Jessica Hall, Saturday is a tender tribute to the filmmaker’s sister and mother, blending present-day moments with intimate home movies that trace their #immigration journey and family history. With warmth, creativity and quiet resilience, the film celebrates Katherine’s independence and the powerful bond between mother and daughter. It offers a moving sense of hope—for every child whose unique qualities are seen, supported and nurtured.

"He knows that I have an aunt whom no one speaks about and who herself barely speaks. She is, at the time of this tweet, 70 years old and living in a group home in upstate New York. I have met her just once. Before this very moment, in fact, I have forgotten she exists at all."

  17. As I was editing this section of my thesis I realized how much my thoughts have changed. I don't think I feel this way about these things anymore, or if I do, I don't think I'd describe them in this way.

It's a good exercise to do this, I think, and that's why I wanted to share it. It forces me to go back and reread things I would otherwise forget.

The recent piece here is a reminder of why we need to reinforce, not weaken, the ability to use rights.

Often it's so disabled people and their families, allies or adovocates can fight for stuff that others get anyway.

  21. Such a stunning shot of Christian Raphael, a music fan from Cambridge.

I loved editing this issue and cover story about a day in Christian's life. He's a cool guy who loves music and bright clothes. He's also non-verbal, has complex learning disabilities and was in hospital with Covid last year.

There's not enough coverage of complex/profound disabilities, Christian helps us rectify that.
