I found a pal that lent me a #solderingiron, so I could solder my #badge addon. Then I discovered he needed an #led to complete his one and I had some, so we colud #solder his as well :)
Nice!

I just bought bleepler kits from this wise sage.

Can't wait to learn how to solder to put them together!

Rambling "How I Spent My ${DURATION}" braindump.
Last week I was carrying bags of water softener #salt into my furnace room and noticed a small #limescale deposit on the floor in the middle of the room that hadn't been there a few days before. Directly above it are a bunch of water #pipes going off in different directions. Found one 90 degree elbow that had more than the usual accumulation of green stuff on it, like a tiny #stalactite. Okay, water #leak found.
I was going to wait for the weekend to fix it, but it seemed to be speeding up, so I did it Wednesday. I had to cut a chunk of #convoluted pipe out of the system that was way more complex than it should have been. It had to go around other #pipes and join another #pipe and around some joists, but the #plumber who put this in 40 years ago had a #fetish or something. No word of a lie, it reminded me more of the Windows NT "pipes" #screensaver than anything else.
In a volume about the size of a 2L bottle of pop, there were 4 #elbows, 3 #unions, and five little pieces of pipe if I remember correctly. I soldered together a matching jumble of parts ... and then couldn't solder one side of it in, because it's at a local low point, and I couldn't get the last dribbles of #water to stop. Any water wicks the heat away and the #solder doesn't stick.
Ended up using a #flex line with #sharkbite connectors to replace the whole thing. What a shame, I was proud of my replacement.

Only #fans - Smol HP PC in use at local trade association making aircraft noise, turns out there are *two* fans inside this one - both had to be replaced. Second fan under HDD supplied with wrong connector (in spite of checking part number), as the correct ones were unobtanium (and even then there is 50% chance wrong one arrives) I had to #solder cable from old #fan (not fun job, 0,25mm cable and working with fingers just 10mm from soldering iron tip with 355°C (at least I managed not to burn my fingers ))
Now the PC is quiet again...

My wife is a long time fan of #Fallout, particularly 3 and #NewVegas. For Christmas last year I bought her a #mightyohm Geiger counter kit. ☢️
She finally assembled it today. ♥️

For the holidays, my son and I got a new soldering station. To make it more useful we designed and 3D printed an accessories holder which fits to it. Turned out extremely well! #aldi #parkside #solder #electronics #3dprinting Thanks to @FreeCAD

Can anyone help with expertise? It's an LTE router sent out by vodafone called R219z. Where can I solder an antenna for better reception? How do I find out more on the used ICs?

I'm doing weird stuff again. I'm soldering USB hubs on flex PCBs.
By accident, I ordered exactly as many 0.1uF 0402 size capacitors that I needed. BAD idea 😅
Well, I guess I'll finish it next week, after the extra capacitors arrive. 🤷🏼♂️

So each button has four legs, I'm not sure which are the important ones to connect, so after holding it back in place each got a refresh of #solder. Then I've 'reinforced' them with some hot glue (the volume up button as well), and added a 1mm shim cut from a plastic packet, between them and the battery so when it's closed up that should help hold them down from the top.
The eagle eyed viewer will notice some sellotape around the red speaker wire where I managed to burn some of the coating off with a clumsily held soldering iron.

So in almost a repeat of yesterday's issue. This time the dry #solder connection was in the front #bike light, where the switch also connects the rear lights. So it took longer to figure out that it wasn't the rear light that was broken. While I complained about yesterday's light, it did have screws to open and close it. This headlight didn't, and was an absolute bar steward to get open, as it was just clamped/glued shut.
I don't know much about #soldering, but is this common case of joints going brittle with time anything to do with the banning of lead in solder?
(For whatever reason my phone decided this picture should be blurry, so imagine I did this repair at very high speed.)

Son on the right, daughter on the left.. Getting better! #solder #soldering

Welp, my daughter’s first solder project… she tried… we are gonna keep at it here. I think she’s having a hard time understanding that sometimes you need to take a break and maybe doing 60 leds at a time isn’t the best idea with cheap solder tips and lead free tin. She’ll find the rhythm, I’ll clean the board fresh after she finishes this and let her practice at it again. #solder #firsttry #soldering

Just soldered the 40 pin connector on my little PCB. I don't think the solder joints look too bad, do you?
-
Lol it was a factory defect that took at least fifteen years to manifest. I'm guessing the miniscule amount of #solder that pin had contact with lasted until... recently. Unfortunately the relay is still hosed but it's a 2-dollar part.

I reorganized a little the #electronics #lab: replaced the shelf foots to have some more space underside and added some scrap #led #strip . Also bought a #soldering #mat: for the first time in my life I don't have to #solder over some cardboard found somewere around 😅 -
Okay I'm going to make one of these aluminum shims to try out this desoldering technique. Seems pretty rad!

Coming to the end of an era. This was my dad's solder which I've used since at least 1980 and he had from the 70's. #making #soldering #solder #crafting #cosplay

I am happy to go for #easterhegg to Hamburg again - but will arrive these time later on Saturday.
Find me in the #hardware #hacking area near the everlasting #solder session by @marove and blinkyparts. There I am up for geeky talks and more, plus you can test and play some noisio #instruments and #prototypes.
If you like, you can directly grab a #kit and solder your own #synth or #noise tool on the side.
