SOURCE: SCIENCE DAILY PSYCHOLOGY FEEDTITLE: Depression may shut down the brain’s ability to make new neurons
URL: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/08/260823094135.htm
A major study found that adults with depression show disrupted production of new neurons in the hippocampus, potentially weakening the brain’s ability to separate new experiences from painful memories. The researchers also identified broad molecular changes that could open the door to new treatments tailored to different biological forms of depression.

This is one of my favourite photos because it's a rare picture of all my bothers and I - with apologies to my 2 sisters who weren't included. I'm in the middle.
This was during a period where life was pretty awesome. I was 21, recently promoted to assistant manager at a Canadian Tire store, just started dating a woman a few months earlier who would become my wife in less than 2 years, and I was driving a 1973 Toyota Celica. I was crushing it. -
When he was a toddler, my oldest son Ryan LOVED Winnie The Pooh as I did when I was a boy. Listening to this on National Public Radio’s “Weekend Edition” yesterday was educational and I admit, brought a tear of two.

Random Specific Thoughts @myrandomspecificthoughts.wordpress.com@myrandomspecificthoughts.wordpress.com ·Rick & Morty
“The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.”
― W.B. Yeats“Two for 350.“
When one is listed for 175, it is not a deal any sane person would take. But I am enthralled; somehow, two for 350 is lucrative, a steal; a price worthy of the art but approved by my student wallet.
They are miniature elephants, handcrafted and painted in blacks, greens and pinks; they are products of human whimsy; reality doesn’t stand a chance. And as such, they are dressed up too, in intricate, elaborate, pretty jhools of blue, green and purple.
He’s staring at me and laying out more colours – yellows and blacks and reds, and there is no end to the colours that are spewing out of his arms. I pick a blue and yellow, and he’s still staring; I feel imagined judgement and put them back to pick up a pink and a black. They’re such an unlikely pair, and colours that don’t make sense. But I know, it’s also the only pink elephant I’ll probably ever hold.
I didn’t know then that I’d give them away. But I think about him, the artist who made these, painted these in these ungodly colours and shipped them across state borders. Does he know what’ll come of these tiny artefacts? Perhaps to him, it is sustenance, numbers and today’s ends meeting. But I like to think he has hopes and dreams; that his work, his labour could potentially see more worlds than he would.
I bought them because I saw them and I had this inexplicable urge where I simply had to have them; in all of the multiverse branches, there was no universe where I walked away empty-handed. I would have given a pound of flesh if I had to. But just as surely as I wanted them, I was aware they weren’t mine to hold onto.
Today, the elephants I’ve nicknamed Rick and Morty are with my friend and his mother, oceans apart. One sits with him, the other with her; each a small, ridiculous assurance that the other is happy and well somewhere in the world.
You just know they are where they should be. And perhaps they are happy, too; objects oblivious to life and its sorrows, having found a purpose they will never learn of.
“We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep.”
― William Shakespeare, The TempestThoughtfully yours,

Today marks 6 years since my mother passed away from pancreatic cancer. This EP, Matters of Life and Death, came from myself navigating all the emotions connected to grief and loss. I don’t normally listen to my own music because I find I inevitably dissect what I created and then only see the imperfections. But this EP is special to me and always will be. Today I will sit and listen, absorb and bathe in the memories I have of her. #music #metal #grief #memories

Old flame, or: Call me back
A pantoum
She blows again. The flame stays lit. “Sunny,” the little candle says. Her mouth goes still around the name. “You used to turn when people called.” “Sunny,” the little candle says. “That girl is gone. Don’t call her back.” “You used to turn when people called.” “I stopped answering long ago.” “That girl is gone. Don’t call her back.” “Then why do you still know her name?” “I stopped answering long ago.” “But something in you answered me.” “Then why do you still know her name?” “I tried to leave her far behind.” “But something in you answered me.” “Perhaps she never really left.” “I tried to leave her far behind.” Her mouth goes still around the name. “Perhaps she never really left.” She blows again. The flame stays lit.
W3 poetry prompt
For this week’s W3, Judy invites us to write a poem in which an old woman tries to blow out the candles on her birthday cake, but one remains lit and whispers a name she has not heard in forty years. The poem takes the form of her conversation with the candle and ends with her deciding whether to let it keep burning or put it out.
Let’s write poetry together!
When it comes to partnership, some humans can make their lives alone – it’s possible. But creatively, it’s more like painting: you can’t just use the same colours in every painting. It’s just not an option. You can’t take the same photograph every time and live with art forms with no differences.
–Ben Harper (b. 1969)Would you like to create poetry with me and have a completed poem of yours featured here at the Skeptic’s Kaddish? I am very excited to have launched the ‘Poetry Partners’ initiative and am looking forward to meeting and creating with you… Check it out!

between always and never: going back in time
Regrettably, I lived a life full of things I want to change. But then again, it brought me here, to who I am today. So I learned to let go. But most of all, I learned that they - that nothing - compared to grief.https://mylittlehawk.com/2026/08/21/between-always-and-never-going-back-in-time/

About four decades ago, a coworker of my mom visited Australia and brought back gifts for people she cared about. Her gift to my mom is still in use. It still looks and works quite well, as I found out myself a few days ago. ☺️

Music is important in my life. I want to sing along when the spirit moves me and feel the intense emotions that music has the power to grant.

Watching my old dog have a good day by barking at the neighbors who weren't even outside, pushing me around, dancing when the treat bag came out.
Watching Adventureland (2009). I kind of like that movie. #summer #memories

It's "World Photography Day". I went through some of my old pictures & created a few collages of the time I was in Greece with my mom and Dimi for around 6 weeks when I was about 15.
They went over there in April when Dimi was about 9 months old. After school got out for the summer in May, me & my cousin Harriet, who was more like an aunt to me (my grandma's age) flew over & joined them.

👨👧👦💼 Nicholas Charriere reminisces about his ambitious days at #YC, where he skillfully hid his secret life as a dad (because clearly, #startups are allergic to babies). Now juggling two kids, a dog, and a calendar busier than a one-armed paper hanger, he’s discovered the shocking revelation that kids might slightly nudge your productivity—who knew? 🚀🤔

I participated in a corn roast festival today, and it was full of fun, laughter, and good vibes. 🌽🔥
Taking pictures was not allowed, so you’ll just have to take my word for it. 😂
