I have many years I would want to relive so I could make the changes that affect the present but there is a haunting thought in the dark recess of my mind telling me this is the major one. With that said I guess today’s answer would be 1982. This is the year I got married, and started my over the road career in earnest. I won’t go into detail but there it is.

I stopped to smell a lilac today and it flooded my memories, taking me back to a time in life where I had nothing to gripe about. The purple flower was a symbol of love and beauty that my mother told me was the gist of life. I was maybe five or six at the time and I wouldn’t trade that memory for anything this world has to offer in these modern times. Memories like these grip my heart strings and gently tug at them bringing tears to my eyes.

A sunset scene in the West viewed the the windows of coach seating on the Amtrak Southwest Chief bound for Chicago from Riverside, CA.

As I often do out here on deck this time of year I think of the last time I hung out at a bar with my oldest son Ryan in Merrill, Wisconsin; it was early June, 2006, and he was home for his only leave before he’d have to ship back to SW Asia to finish his deployment. We shot pool, smoked cigars and he turned me onto this band he’d been listening to. A couple months later, he was gone forever. His favorite off that album.

The evening’s “live” selection on deck: it was about this time 20 years ago my oldest son Ryan, on leave from his SW Asia deployment that he was KIA on just a couple months later, hit a bar in Merrill, Wisconsin, smoking cigars, playing the jukebox and playing pool. On the way home in his new Mustang, he turned me on to this band he’d discovered while overseas and this was his favorite song off their self-titled debut release.

It feels like this week I am #grieving for many things lost. I've never felt like this before unless I was actually grieving a death. But now it seems I am processing things that should have been processed a long, long time ago. So I'm letting it happen. I'm crying my eyes out and letting it all go, perhaps I need to deal with this stuff built up in my body and mind for so long, before I can physically start to #heal as well.
