  3. Remember, remember, the fifth of November... Tonight was Bonfire Night in Great Britain, which celebrates the foiling of a plot in 1605 to destroy Westminster and blow the king and government to smithereens. History Extra Magazine takes a look at what might have happened if the group of English Catholics, led by Guy Fawkes, had been successful.

  4. From childhood I’ve always loved fireworks, both the visual spectacle and the cacophony of noise that accompanies them. I even buy some from time to time.

That said, I get that they are not universally popular. For organised events I think that drone swarm displays are the future, and if it has to be fireworks, we should ideally be good neighbours and buy the quieter ones.

  7. (Repost from last year, originally posted on another instance)

Guy Fawkes night originally celebrated the failure of the Gunpowder plot. These days, Guy Fawkes has also become a symbol of malcontent with the government & fighting for freedom, ala V for Vendetta.

    Never lose hope.

  8. The Beaver Moon is to be bright tonight and I see the tide is one metre higher in my ususal swim spot than usual, not that I am going swimming tonight but I do like to sea swim and hope to keep it going over the winter, it is cold but also quite refreshing and I think very good for the old circulation. I am normally warm blooded so it is nice to feel normal after the swim gravitating to radiators and hot drinks #fullmoon #beavermoon #swimming #guyfawkes

  9. From Wikipedia:

The earliest recorded rhyme, from 1742, is reproduced below alongside one bearing similarities to most Guy Fawkes Night ditties, recorded in 1903 at Charlton on Otmoor:

    Don't you Remember,
    The Fifth of November,
    'Twas Gunpowder Treason Day,
    I let off my gun,
    And made'em all run.
And Stole all their Bonfire away. (1742)

The fifth of November, since I can remember,
Was Guy Faux, Poke him in the eye,
Shove him up the chimney-pot, and there let him die.
A stick and a stake, for King George's sake,
If you don't give me one, I'll take two,
The better for me, and the worse for you,
Ricket-a-racket your hedges shall go. (1903)

  10. Mistodon: this #teletext portrait of a man in a #GuyFawkes mask (almost assuredly derived from #DavidLloyd's work in #VForVendetta) was drawn by @uglifruit and included in the MIST1121 artpack collection released four years ago this month.

  11. Expected to see a lot more Guy Fawkes memes and references, perhaps I am showing my age and internet proclivities a little too openly...
