The emergency:

• Libya is already dangerous for people who flee. They are always at risk to be detained in prisons, where they face torture and (sexual) abuse.

• Top diplomats and UN officials describe concentration camp-like conditions inside these prisons.

Now mobs threaten to start pogroms from OCTOBER 1ST

• These mobs are angry that the EU turned Libya into a detention center, paying it to trap people trying to cross the sea while refusing responsibility for the moral and humanitarian consequences.

But: instead of attacking the system, they BRUTALLY ATTACK THOSE SEEKING SAFETY AND THOSE HELPING

The EU - Libya gate:

• As you know, (EU) politicians are obsessed with the idea of stopping migration by any means.
• And Libya is a main departure point for people hoping to reach EU shores.

That's why the EU TRAINS, FUNDS AND EQUIPS LIBYAN MILITIAS to capture people at sea.

The vicious cycle:

• Funded by Europe, Libyan militias intercept people at sea ⏩️
• People are forced back to Libya and handed over to militiamen in detention centers ⏩️
• To be released, people must pay extensive ransoms - or risk being killed ⏩️
• Militiamen organize departures themselves -for more money. 🔁

The EU - Libya gate:

• At sea we often see a race: Between Libyan militias who race to capture people in distress and civil rescue crews who race to save lives and offer a safe harbor.

As prescribed in international law.

• But the Italian government wants us to inform militias of our rescue intentions,
so they can abduct the people instead.
