  3. Ibaraki Prefecture’s Plan On Giving Rewards For Reporting Illegal Foreign Workers To Take Effect On May 11

Even though controversy hounded it, the approved plan of Ibaraki Prefecture in Japan on rewarding those who report businesses hiring illegal foreign works will take effect on May 11, according to a news report by Kyodo News. Ibaraki Prefecture (population of around 2.9 million) is located northeast of Tokyo and it already has a high number of illegal foreign workers.

To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the news report of Kyodo News Some parts in boldface…

A controversial plan to reward people who report businesses hiring illegal foreign workers will take effect May 11 in a prefecture northeast of Tokyo, the local government said Wednesday.

Ibaraki Prefecture, which, as of 2024, had the highest number of illegal foreign workers among the country’s 47 prefectures, will report such employers to police after verifying the information. It will offer 10,000 yen ($63) if a tip leads to a case being opened.

Reports will be limited to businesses hiring foreign workers unlawfully, and the prefecture plans to issue guidelines, including not basing reports solely on individuals’ appearance or nationality.

Reports can be filed through the prefectural website by providing personal information such as name, address and phone number, and must include a copy of identification, such as a driver’s license, the prefecture said.

Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What is your reaction to this development? Do you think more local government units and prefectures in Japan should follow Ibaraki Prefecture’s policy on dealing with illegal foreign workers found being hired by businesses? Do you think such a policy will improve Japan’s way of removing illegal foreign workers and cleaning up the private sector from such people? Is Ibaraki Prefecture’s 10,000 Yen reward good enough? Do you think Ibaraki Prefecture should come up a new policy to punish foreigners who cause public disturbances?

  7. A quotation from Thomas More

Will thou know what wonders strange be in the land that late was found?
Will thou learn thy life to lead, by divers ways that godly be?
Will thou of virtue and vice understand the very ground?
Will thou see this wretched world, how full it is of vanity?

[Vis nova monstra, novo dudum nunc orbe reperto?
       Vivendi varia uis ratione modos?
Vis qui virtutum fontes, vis unde malorum
Principia? et quantum rebus inane latet?]

Thomas More (1478-1535) English lawyer, social philosopher, statesman, humanist, Christian martyr
Utopia, “A Meter of Four Verses in the Utopian Tongue,” “Cornelius Graphey to the Reader” (1516 ed.) [tr. Open Utopia (Duncombe) (2012)]

  15. The #German ministry for interior affairs is planning to cut down subsidies for courses designed to help #foreigners and #refugees #integrate into the German society:

    tagesschau.de/inland/innenpoli

For anyone who knows the situation in #Germany and can think straight for 1 minute, this is an obvious foot-gun on so many levels.

    - Germany's society is aging, the financing of #socialsecurity is already on the verge of collapse. Every year, the workforce gets smaller. Every year, the number of pensioned people grows. Every year, the prices for social security increase. In order to keep the social security system alive at current quality levels, Germany needs to grow the workforce. Unless birthrates go up, the only way to achieve that is through #immigration. (And even if birthrates go up, the economic effect will only hit in 20-25 years.)
    - Companies are already struggling to find (qualified) personnel. Reducing immigration is not going to help.
    - Taking away help from immigrants to integrate into the German society *will* inevitably create problems for/by poor integration. This will benefit the populist extreme-right #fascist #Nazi-party #FckAfD in the mid-term future.

I'm really amazed at how "#conservatives" can aim so hard at their own foot without even realising.

  16. A quotation from Shakespeare

Grant them removed, and grant that this your noise
    Hath chid down all the majesty of England;
Imagine that you see the wretched strangers,
Their babies at their backs and their poor luggage,
Plodding tooth ports and costs for transportation,
And that you sit as kings in your desires,
Authority quite silent by your brawl,
    And you in ruff of your opinions clothed;
What had you got? I’ll tell you. You had taught
How insolence and strong hand should prevail,
How order should be quelled; and by this pattern
Not one of you should live an aged man,
For other ruffians, as their fancies wrought,
With self same hand, self reasons, and self right,
Would shark on you, and men like ravenous fishes
    Would feed on one another.

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) English dramatist and poet
    Sir Thomas More, Act 2, sc. 4, l. 55ff (c. 1592)

  17. A quotation from The Bible

All baptised in Christ, you have all clothed yourselves in Christ, and there are no more distinctions between Jew and Greek, slave and free, male and female, but all of you are one in Christ Jesus.
