Datacentes are a distraction because it gives Ai opponents a false sense of a victory where there is none.

I had another debate like this, where the counter view was "Sure the tech is useful for people like YOU, but not for anyone else"
At the time, I couldn't formulate appropriate response...We live in an information age.
We had data centres before Ai and most folks realistically couldn't live without informatics.
The logistics supply chain is 6 weeks long and every single link is ICT.Ai is super useful for IT folks, even if non-knowledge workers see it as useless.
But in information economy, IT are the farmers and Ai is a 24 blade plow.
You are right, Politicians are nervous, just like ordinary folks about Ai because they don't understand WTF us going to happen, no more than folks in the 1990 could imagine impact of the internet.
Everyone sees the dark clouds on the horizon.
We should all batten down the roofs and make umbrellas before the rain comes, rather than shoot canons at the clouds.#regulateAi is the only path forward.

The six stages of coming to terms with AI:
1/ Ignorance
2/ Derision ("lol, stochastic parrot")
3/ Dismissal
4/ Incongruence ("Wait, it can do WHAT?!")

6/ FearI've been through all six myself, and watched everyone around me cycle through them for four years.
Plenty of people stop at a stage and chose to stay there, including stage one.But if you get through all six, you emerge somewhere that isn't fear at all:
This is a powerful technology being deployed at speed, without accountability, and the answer to that is the same as it's always been for powerful technology. Regulation.
The direction was set years ago; the Bletchley and Seoul Declarations. What's missing is political pressure to act on them (Organise people!).
If you doubt regulation matters, note who opposes it hardest: tRump, Karp, and Thiel; who now calls anyone advocating AI regulation the literal " #Antichrist "
When opposing safety rules requires apocalyptic theology, the rules are probably touching something real.If AI worries you, the worst thing you can do is stop learning about it.

So, I was watching one of the restaurant rescue shows (that and cooking shows are my favorite "sports"), and there was a restaurant that didn't have a printed (or even posted) menu -- one had to go to the App. I'm sorry, but I'm thinking that #SmartPhones are really the so-called #MarkOfTheBeast from #Revelations13. I mean, think about it. One either has it in their hand or via their glasses (smart glasses), right? And think about how hard it is to do anything without a smart phone (like concert tickets)! Hmmmm...
