I hit the wall in my #cDrama #jDrama , #kDrama and #twDrama viewing last week, and running a query on my database I found out why. Even allowing for a dozen or so shorts, it turns out I watched 66 Dramas in 3 months. No wonder I'm ready to slow down and get back to #Reading and rewatching favourite #Hindi #films Only two 10s in my Dramas so far, and one of them was not even from this century!

My lovely wife's suggestion we rewatch Lagaan nudged me to compile a rewatch list of films where at most subs augment or clarify my comprehension and that I could follow at least the gist of without subs at all if needed.

Reason 1,678,934,520 why I love my wife: While I was playing a song from the last #Hindi #film we saw (the excellent #MainVaapasAaunga ) she said "we should watch Lagaan again" - if you get a life partner who WANTS to watch a 4 hour film you love, again, keep em! 😍
My response is a song whose chorus I've often sung to her, from a film that was released the same year she was -

#Hindi #Panjabi #film #MainVaapasAaunga was the first movie I've seen in cinemas since Le Comte de Monte Cristo, and I was seriously thinking about watching it again at the cinema. Sadly, it's already gone. If it's showing at cinema near you, please consider going. If not, look out for it on Netflix
More than 10% of my town's population is Sikh Panjabi, but even that did not save this gem. Hopefully the Panjabi diaspora in Canada and elsewhere will do it the justice it deserves.

If there was an Oscar for 'most tonally misleading musical number in a film', Ishq Mastana from Main Vaapas Aaunga would be just about a lock, I think 😍
The song is a catchy mix of #Hindi and #Panjabi and the line
"Panj Ne Dariya Jin Ki Alag Hai Kahani" - "each of the Five Rivers has its own (or, a different) story" makes me think of my Dad's repeated recitation of the Five Rivers to his kids. I really wish I'd learned them before he died, but I know he'd be happy they're imprinted now.On a related note, I love that English subtitles in the film spell the name of the region, the language and the people as PAnjab(i) never "PUnjab" - "Panj" is the correct transliteration of the word for "five" and I have spelled it with an "a" for decades. To see it used in a mainstream big hit is pleasing validation.

A bluesky mutual tipped me off tipping me off about Main Vaapas Aaunga. VERY excited to watch it, even if the train clips in the trailer remind me of my grandfather's (not exaggerated) horror stories of Partition train massacres I grew up hearing from my Dad.
It's impossible to make a happy movie about Partition but because it's literally the reason I exist, this will be the third Partition themed film I've seen. This one has a top-flight EVERYTHING - director, music (A.R. Rahman globally famous) cast - the dying grandfather played by an iconic doyen of Hindi cinema, Naseeruddin Shah. After being reassured it had subs, my non Hindi-speaking wife said after watching the trailer "I'm glad we're going to this - it will be a tearjerker".

I like a good love story, but "Ginny Wedss Sunny 2" (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt36277018) just didn't get going till about the last half hour.
The comedy was weak and the characters mostly were annoying. The last half hour was good but leaves you wondering why these people are so stupid 😛
