  4. My Dramaland Darlings!

I need a quick pick-me-up of a genre that will have me giggling even though life is hard. Happy ending is a must. Action is fine. Romance, Found Family, and Great Friendships are highly desired.

    What should I watch?

  5. I am just loving "A Bona Fide Killer"

The cinematography & writing are top-notch. In eps 7, a character's resolve changes and in the scene, there is this subtle camera shake. I had to go back to see if my TV just glitched, but no, it's there.

Also, depicting a mental health issue with the deafening silence of a snowfall - just beautiful. Throughout there are subtle details and small lines, like "It's not even one bite." that tell you so much.

The FL, Kong Hyo Jin, is not one of my favorites, but she is perfect in this.

  8. CW: The Apartment Job ep10

Remember, the bank book showed the money was withdrawn on November 31st (!), and he only became president around New Year. It shouldn’t be difficult to prove it couldn’t have been him. 🫠

  9. Watching "Spooky in Love" with Spanish Latam dubbing.

Is concerning that the translation has errors, the kind of errors that a LLM makes :cat_thisisfine:

  10. Reading Slumps Are Swamps

I’m at a stage where nothing sticks. Perhaps it’s summer lethargy. Or I simply overworked myself and burned out. Like a candle on a dark, dark night. Drip, drip, drip, the energy is dimmer. And there’s an ick for everything. Moving. Sitting. Thinking. It probably sounds worse than it is, really. But it’s just annoying.

Recently, I started watching A Bona Fide Killer, and episode 8 gave me emotional whiplash. I followed Yoo Bona deal with a similar state to what I’m currently experiencing—wasting away on a couch in the snowy mountains. I say similar because unlike her, firstly, I’m not in the snowy mountains, and secondly, I do find myself thorn between two worlds: laying around all day, doing absolutely nothing and simply recharging, or immersing myself in all these little projects I stacked in the back-pocket of my mind.

It’s like Russian Roulette. Doing nothing feels like a loss. Doing something costs energy I need to build up. Two opposites. I basically feel like Xiaohu Dan in this frame. Or another from episode 13 probably (?), where he was faced with two difficult choices.

Anyway, since I didn’t have a trusty minister to hand the choice over to, my only choice was to stubbornly move forward. So, my next logical step was to search for a cure on my bookshelves. Sit and read. Nothing more.

But that didn’t work as well as I expected either. Words kept bouncing right over my head, almost mockingly: “Thought you could catch us? Think again!”

I took a break. Went back again. Rejected.

    I picked up another book.

    Same story.

And to top it all off, two books I promised to read and review looked at me with eyes of longing. Well, in my imagination, at least. I mentioned a while ago how I accepted two stories for review: one with K-drama vibes, and another one with Sakura blossoms covering a detective’s tracks. Both sounded exciting. But the problem, as Taylor Swift puts it, is me. Or perhaps the timing is not yet right.

Either way, I hope to return to both of them soon (I’ll definitely need to start rereading the previous chapters) and share an impression. All I need is for this reading slump ghost to go away. It makes me feel like I’m trying to cross through a swamp. The mud coils around my legs in tendrils, pulling me down, trying to keep me trapped in the same spot over and over again. And yet, I keep trying to push through.

After a month’s break, I picked up another book, one I tried reading somewhere in the first few months of the year and abandoned yet again on a shelf. A Sorcery of Thorns. It’s still a bit of a battle as words keep skipping rope over my head, but at least I’m making progress. Within this past week, I managed to read a hundred pages. Although I still had to revisit some, as they didn’t quite register into my brain.

Perhaps I need a change of scenery. I’m likely caught in life’s daily grind.

    After all…

  11. CW: Spooky in Love finale

Oh well, I wouldn't call it bad, just bland. Honestly I was bored and just didn't feel any sparks between our couple towards the end.

Oh well at least I did t drop it?

    *** Can We Get Married? (2012) ***
    (Viki 20 0:56 eps)

    [!!CW!! Synopsis & non-spoilery review.]

In this slice-of-life, a young couple decides to get married, but it's not easy when the families & everyone's pride get involved. Misunderstanding after misunderstanding threatens to derail the whole relationship. Meanwhile, her older sister's relationship is falling apart, her aunt is going through a midlife crisis, & her best friend has been betrayed by her boyfriend. From a relationship standpoint, it has something for everyone.

Common in earlier K-drama & especially ones with Jung So Min, there is a lot of hitting & yelling involved especially in the early episodes. This series has one of my most hated mothers ever. I was gasping at the gall. I hated so many characters at the beginning, but, as good dramas do, I started to empathize with some, & even started disliking characters that I had thought were great. From the crazy beginnings, this drama turned out to have some depth & made me reconsider (just a bit) how much I hate the meddling mothers.

Nothing extraordinary on the production. Good casting & acting, if a bit OTT style, with Jung So Min again picking an annoying character that you come to understand.

*** See You at Work Tomorrow! (2026) ***
    (Prime 12 1:10 eps)

    [!!CW!! Synopsis & non-spoilery review.]

An office worker who was originally creative & motivated has been worn down by her bad work environment & her love life seems to have suffered a similar fate. To get away from her really horrible boss, she joins a new department with a boss whose reputation isn't great either. He's rumored to be cold, calculating, & unapologetic.

While the acting was good, everything else about this drama was bland. The leads had no chemistry; characters changed, but who knows why - no development, just changed as the story needed. If you want a calm, mature (or would that be repressed?) workplace drama, this is for you.

I kept watching for the second couple, but even their final resolution felt manufactured. It didn't come from any growth in the characters.

Seo In Guk just can't seem to find the right romcom lately.

  15. Okay, I totally regret watching episode 11 of Spooky in Love because now we have to wait eight hours for the next episode. It's good that they managed to reinsert the whole ghostly angle of the story—I was getting super annoyed that they focused so much on the corporate shenanigans that didn't really matter much. Heck, I even skipped most of the corporate stuff and still got the gist of the story, so what does that tell you? Anyway, pretty glad that they brought it back, and it feels as if Spooky in Love managed to get its footing back just in time.

  16. #Kdrama tropes you wanna kill

(I'm sure all of you are dying to select all of the above but you have only 1 choice. I am mean like that)

  17. Seriously, Kdramas are giving Korean drivers and pedestrians such a bad rap. Surely they are not all blind to pedestrians standing right in front of them. 😆 And pedestrians, surely you can do more than just stand there waiting to be mowed down 🫠

  19. CW: Spoilers, thoughts for Teach You A Lesson

@dnkboston I liked a lot the episode where the abusive mother is given a taste of her own medicine!

I took the violence as dark humour comedy, rather than a realistic take. Otherwise I couldn't have watched it.

And while I agree with you on the missing point, I believe South Korea isn't ready to change yet. Even the families moving to Canada reproduce the same pattern of after-school clubs and hagwons.

  20. @smilematou j'ai essayé de regarder le premier épisode de The Fiery Priest mais après 30 min j' accroche toujours pas.
Je pense que c'est pas trop mon type d'humour et c'est très masculin au niveau des personnages principaux.

  21. @dnkboston A nice psychological thriller I recently watched is Notes From The Last Row.

Alternatively, if you can stomach harsh domestic violence, As You Stood By is another great choice.
